fifnir··on Rtty – Access a device’s terminal from anywhere via the web
Oh yeah I wasn't going to try and circumvent, just giving an example to elucidate
fifnir··on Rtty – Access a device’s terminal from anywhere via the web
As an an example, at my work you cannot make any outbound ssh connection. The only way to get one is to apply for a specific connection , where you have to explain why you need an outbound connection, in which case they open a port for you and the remote machine you specified.
fifnir··on James Lovelock: 'I Would Not Waste My Fortune on Colonizing Mars'
Why is that paradoxical? Of course cells will proliferate faster in a younger body's environment
fifnir··on James Lovelock: 'I Would Not Waste My Fortune on Colonizing Mars'
And completely out of touch with reality

Fuck, every time!!!!

pd.read_csv(filepath, sep="\t", header=False)

And I've been using this library almost every day for years

fifnir··on Nuclear power is the only green solution (2004)
The US would need about 50x500km !
fifnir··on Nuclear power is the only green solution (2004)
That would probably work in american suburbia but would it even make a dent in the power consumption of densely inhabited cities?
fifnir··on Genetically engineered moth is released into an open field
> the diamondback female moth would be able to determine

I'll rephrase:

If some females for whatever reason avoid the engineered males, they will produce more offspring

fifnir··on Nuclear power is the only green solution (2004)
Can solar scale enough to cover our needs or would we run into space issues? (And keep in mind most countries don't have the USA's space availability) What would be the environmental impact of covering as much land as we need to cover with photovoltaics or wind turbines?

fifnir··on Why Are Alphabet Letters Arranged How They Are?
It has its difficulties, with the weird disconnection of spelling and pronouncing, or the phrasal verbs, but compared to any language that has proper conjugation and declension... it's a super easy language.
fifnir··on Why Do American Houses Have So Many Bathrooms?
Here's what it looks like:

left-right controls the temperature, up-down controls the flux

The smaller knob controls if the water goes to the showerhead or just out the faucet

fifnir··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
maybe I'm "that guy", but why does everything have to have thumbnails and icons these days? that's so much space that's wasted instead of harboring more information... we need more geeky, dense, info-rich UIs
fifnir··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
I threw everything in a checkvist (https://checkvist.com) list and generously annotated every bookmark with tags, now I have bookmarks and attached notes and it's searchable with tags, it works really good !

I think this offers the exact same thing as the popular pinboard but it's free !

fifnir··on Economics Needs a Post-Crash Revolution
Not in my corner of the world unfortunately
fifnir··on Economics Needs a Post-Crash Revolution
Simple non-growth-based capitalist endeavor that I've been daydreaming about (setting up a supermarket as an example):

The goal of Supermarket(SM) is to provide products to customers and a stable occupation for those working in the system, not to maximize profit. SM will only sell to subscribed members.

Whenever someone buys something, they pay only the cost of the product, and the purchase is recorded. At the end of each month, SM has to balance its finances: costs have to be equalized with income. We will charge our members an additional % over whatever they bought for this month, just as much as it's needed to balance the books. The more customers we have and the more volume we moved, the less % everyone has to pay.

This way, instead of customers paying a predetermined % margin for each product, they pay as little as it's needed to keep things going. They don't pay for anyone's profit.

fifnir··on Stupid Alexa Trick: Speaking French with a Horrible American Accent
> More than half of the world's population speaks more than one language - we need to get better at building software that accounts for that.

Yes please, can't I just setup a cookie or something that lets sites know which languages I speak? I'm so sick and tired of american sites forcing spanish on me because I log from a spanish IP...

fifnir··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
I don't know, I guess it's a bit more cartoony.. The dollar sign is tightly connected to concepts like profit/capitalism etc
fifnir··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
I think you're on to something here.
fifnir··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
I find it sad when people have no other metric of value other than $$$. "I can't sell this, what is this?"
fifnir··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
> has little to no value in industry.

So what ? It has great value to history and humankind.

fifnir··on DoorDash’s about-face on tipping shows customers have more clout than workers
One of the projects i've daydreamed about is an app where you sign up for issues that you care about like water privitization or palm oil etc, and then you scan a barcode and get a report of whether the product is connected to any of those problems. You will then (hopefully) not buy the product and maybe hit a button in the app saying that you chose not to buy it.

Every month, the app collects the data from its users and produces a report: "Dear Nestle, this month you lost $X of revenue on account of people boycotting you because of this or that."

I think it's important to send some kind of negative feedback to companies.

fifnir··on What If Consciousness Comes First?
> it's not a question for which an answer can be deduced from observation

Another assumption. Throughout history, again and again, science has discovered ways to answer questions, and when science finally arrives, it brings the "final" answer since no other method can compete. Haven't we learned this lesson yet? Why is consciousness the final bastion ?

Of course, philosophizing on issues like the OP article is incredibly valuable. After all, science is just philosophy with extra steps.

fifnir··on Show HN: A tool to convert Jupyter notebooks to beautiful blogs
Nice, have you looked into jupyter-themes? I've played with it a bit to make a similar notebooks-->static project and it's really great!
