ficklepickle··on Prions
I take a liquid supplement called Floradix for b12/iron. It is made from yeast and vegetables. I'm prone to anemia and it has been immensely helpful.
ficklepickle··on Fastmail to end support for operamail.com email addresses
Ugh, paypal is bad for this. I have to keep an ancient hotmail account alive, just because it is the email I used to create the account 10+ years ago.

I can login with my more recent email account, so it would be easy to forget the old hotmail account is even tied to it.

ficklepickle··on MX-19.4 Now Available
I use Debian testing with the Cinnamon desktop environment.
ficklepickle··on Netscape ISP Homepage
I was curious if I could find anything out about their stack. Turns out they are using something called Apache Traffic Server[0].

> Formerly a commercial product, Yahoo! donated it to the Apache Foundation

ficklepickle··on Playwright-test – cross-browser end-to-end test suite with Playwright
Can anybody tell me about playwright vs puppeteer? The API looks very similar. At first glance it seems to be written by some of the same people. The major difference appears to be supporting different engines.

It looks like puppeteer may now support FF, but not WebKit/Safari.

It just seems like there is probably a story there.

ficklepickle··on Revision demoparty banned on Twitch mid-stream
It's a bit of an incel meme. One tried to sue twitch for $25 million for making him into a masturbation addict or some such thing.
ficklepickle··on Lawsuit against TSA and DEA over airport seizures achieves first victory
Civil forfeiture is a joke. Either prove a crime occurred or GTFO.
ficklepickle··on Azure was having DNS issues
DNS responses for our app servers in Azure were failing and now they are taking ~4000ms. They have a really short TTL too, which really exacerbates the issue.
ficklepickle··on Latest Mozilla VPN features
Maybe ProtonVPN is one of the ones using their users residential IPs to route traffic. How else do you prevent Netflix enumerating all your IP addresses?
ficklepickle··on Latest Mozilla VPN features
Just about anybody that watches YouTube regularly knows what a VPN is. Even very mainstream, non-tech channels have been sponsored by VPN companies. It has died down a bit now, but it was insane for a while. A constant flow of sketchy VPN companies.

VPNs are heavily marketed to regular consumers these days. Mostly for region shifting or vague privacy/security benefits.

ficklepickle··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
I completely agree. I have to talk to these people all day, now I'm supposed to talk to them while I eat? Never mind the fact it isn't socially acceptable to actually talk while eating.

I just want to walk, read something interesting and eat.

ficklepickle··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
I don't understand. I work remotely and regularly debug issues and brainstorm solutions with my teammates. Their physical proximity is not relevant. Clearly I am missing something.
ficklepickle··on Wezterm – A GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator and multiplexer
Moment of shame. I don't understand terminal multiplexers. I just open a new terminal and SSH in again if need be. Keyboard shortcuts to arrange the windows.
ficklepickle··on Raspberry Pi Floppy Controller Board
We would be friends. Any pics?
ficklepickle··on Security Breach at US Universities
There are a few pictures of docs with SSNs on that page.

It appears to be some sort of leaks onion site titled "clop leaks".

ficklepickle··on BitClout's social media experiment is one bad idea on top of another
I don't understand why this was dead. I'm not in the crypto world, but it seemed like a reasonable blog post to me, so I vouched for it.
ficklepickle··on French monks locked down with 2.8 tonnes of cheese pray for buyers
Here* is a link to a quantitative assessment of milk consumption around the world.

There is even a handy map.

Interestingly, they note that milk consumption is higher amongst older people. Possibly due to the crazy amount of milk propaganda historically.

I know this isn't directly related to your comment, but it was getting heated so I wanted to derail that.

ficklepickle··on Van Eck Phreaking
I'd imagine it is the speakers in the monitor picking up the signal, with their wires acting as an antenna. AM is cool like that.
ficklepickle··on Douglas Adams' note to self reveals author found writing torture
As someone who has been susceptible to chronic depression, I understand completely. I've had to explore these nagging doubts with a good therapist to be able to get past them.

Motivation is still a black box for me. I have learned that of I'm not motivated, something is wrong.

ficklepickle··on Amazon Keeps Getting Sued for Paying Drivers Less Than Minimum Wage
Yes, they need some actionable information. I remember seeing my first one as 15 year old Canadian on vacation. My first thought was good thing I'm in Hawaii. My second thought was I can't do anything with this vague information.

It was some green slime you put in your bike tires to prevent puncture leaks. I had never seen that before. I bought it and took it home with me, skillfully avoiding California so it didn't become carcinogenic.

ficklepickle··on Japanese man leaves horrible job, gets horrible letter from the company
I guess I shouldn't judge someone by looks, but he just looks like a horrible person.

ficklepickle··on New Brunswick monitoring more than 40 cases of unknown neurological disease
Moose hunting seems quite popular in NB. Moose are also susceptible to CWD.

The moose population there has increased nearly 10x since 1960. In the 2020 hunting season, 3900 moose were taken. That is more than the entire population in 1960. So it seems like the people of NB having been eating increasing amounts of moose over the years.

It will be interesting to see if these unlucky folks are moose eaters.

ficklepickle··on We found and fixed a rare race condition in our session handling
If it were a hash collision, I would think the odds of it involving two users geographically close to each other would be quite small.

That's a weird one, thanks for sharing it!

I understand and I think that is acceptable. I'd welcome you and yours in Canada. When both groups respect each other, true integration comes over generations of working together.

Obviously we did not respect the Indigenous people and I hope that can me mended through generations of mutual respect.

I think Vancouver is better because of the rich mix of cultures. It's not perfect here but I think it is pretty good. I have seen a Muslim man give his shoes to a homeless man on the bus and walk home barefoot in the rain. I believe anything is possible.

ficklepickle··on GitHub, fuck your name change
I think "integration" is a sham. Integration implies a give and take, a compromise. It seems actually assimilation or submission is what many Euro countries want.

As a Canadian (Vancouver), I can tell you true integration happens over generations of people working together and respecting each other. In those conditions, it is unavoidable.

If either group lacks respect, the outcome is always conflict.

You put their kids into school together young and they won't know not to be friends until you tell them. That was my experience, anyway.

Think pendulums reacting to their perceptions of each other, maybe.

I work with a Canadian team but American parent company. We see what they are going through and it is definitely different. I think our version of equality is just working together as peers and respecting each other, there is no performative or ablutionary aspect.

For the record, I think parent co. is genuine and seems very diverse too. Views are my own yada yada.
