fibbery··on Show HN: Village – Hacker News for people who care about their cities
Patch still exists. Are you talking about it in past tense because it isn't good anymore?
fibbery··on TaskRabbit users revolt as the company shuts down its bidding system
I've used task rabbit a few times, but I won't ever use them again after this change. The way that it worked before let you post any task, and find the exact right person, at the lowest possible price (thanks to the bidding system). Now they require you to pick a tasker before you can even specify what the task is or know whether the taskrabbit is available on a certain day, which makes zero sense. It's a shame, because I deeply admired the user experience of the previous site but this new one has gone off the rails.
fibbery··on Living Simply in a Dumpster
This is how you get slums.
fibbery··on Taking a Naked Selfie? Your Phone Should Step in to Protect You
An alternative might be to have a different mode for the camera, private and public. Kind of like incognito mode on Chrome.
fibbery··on How Memorizing “$19.05” Can Help You Outsmart the MTA
In the state of CA, the payment terms must be in the lease:

If the agreement does not specify the form of payment, any form will be considered acceptable. If rent can be paid in person, the agreement must include the days and hours payment will be accepted. If rent can be paid only by mail, then it is presumed paid on the date it is mailed, if the tenant can show proof of mailing. If rent can be deposited at a financial institution, the owner must disclose the account number and name and address of the institution, which must be within five miles of the tenant's residence.

fibbery··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
Yep, it's based on the census data.
fibbery··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
Nice idea, and super important for choosing where to live.
fibbery··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
Yeah, it was just my attempt at calculating it based on census data. If I were to update it I would do so using a more standardized score like gini-simpson, which I was unaware of at the time...
fibbery··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
Yep, I just did searches on Flickr and grabbed ones that I liked tagged with the city, but they could be totally wrong!
fibbery··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
I made an interactive map a year ago to explore the same question (where do you live taking into account factors like income, weather, walkability, crime, education, politics, etc), check it out if you are interested http://two88cities.herokuapp.com/
fibbery··on Show HN: NowVia – Save, organize, and discuss the things you find interesting
Like delicious used to be?
fibbery··on Buttons – A button library built with Sass and Compass
I noticed that as well... it's pretty visually awkward, going from no button-like affordances to suddenly having them appear during the click event.
fibbery··on Processed foods that dilute protein content subvert our appetite control systems
From the post: "Food manufacturers have a financial incentive to replace protein with cheaper forms of calories, and to manipulate the sensory qualities of foods to disguise their lower protein content."
fibbery··on There is no gender gap in tech salaries
As someone who will be in the same position as your wife not too far from now, this is both good to know and frustrating. Have you ever had people refer to your taking care of the kids as "baby sitting"? I've heard that one is common.
fibbery··on Why you should move that button 3px to the left
I don't understand how "some designers don't handle edge cases" translates into "we shouldn't have designers".
fibbery··on Show HN: A developers-only news site you join via pull request
OK which of you broke it? The site is currently down.
fibbery··on Why We Abandoned Crowdsourcing
I tried flightfox when I was planning a vacation last year. I had thought it was more like taskrabbit where people would compete for the lowest price and was confused/disappointed when it told me I had to pick someone. Unfortunately none of the results seemed particularly promising.

In the end, either I should be working for flightfox or the service isn't as good as it should be, because the "expert" results were worse than what I found on my own... and I had the impression that the lack of competition was part of it.

fibbery··on Show HN: thedaywefightback.js
this is really generous and should definitely be followed up on. tons of email is easier to ignore than a cascade of real letters.
fibbery··on Getting Girls Into Programming, One Children’s Book At A Time
The core belief is that if it weren't for gender socialization, approximately equal numbers of boys and girls would want to be programmers, but instead the numbers are skewed by how we raise children and steer them toward pursuits along gender lines.

To think otherwise holds an implicit assumption that somehow our gender so radically alters our brains that it determines what professions we pursue as adults - not an unpopular opinion among the internet's legion of armchair evolutionary psychologists. Given your use of the term "inclinations to certain tasks" I assume you are more in this camp, but since you seem genuinely curious I wanted to provide the opposite perspective.

You can also consider how the medical and law professions used to be entirely male dominated, and no doubt many people said this was because women were biologically unsuited to fill these roles, yet now the numbers of graduates in each field are swiftly becoming equal. The goal of promoting women in tech is so that in 20 years we will see similar equal numbers in engineering.

fibbery··on We are not normal people
Would Twitter v1 count?
fibbery··on Anyone can change your email subscription on LinkedIn without your approval
Is this really that big of a deal? If it's a choice between allowing anyone to unsubscribe someone (low annoyance factor and rare) versus requiring that all users who wish to unsubscribe log in (annoying and possible can spam violation),then it makes sense to choose the latter.
fibbery··on “Marriage promotion” is a destructive cargo cult
Yeah, using these figures our married tax liability still ends up being more. I suspect because our incomes are very similar and there is a steep hike (5%) between tax bracket we would be in individually and the one that applies to us if we got married.
fibbery··on “Marriage promotion” is a destructive cargo cult
I'm pretty sure my partner and I will face a loss when we marry, because our combined incomes will push us into a higher tax bracket.
fibbery··on Paid maternity leave world maps for mothers and fathers
"no true feminist would ever say that a woman are more needed (or is better) at taking care of a young child than men"

while I am not a scholar of women's studies, I would hazard that most modern feminists would agree with this statement.

fibbery··on Interviewing as a Front-End Engineer in San Francisco
Heh. The second question makes me feel a lot better about my JS knowledge. I could probably answer what 'this' is when given some code (eg are we inside a class? or a jquery event handler?) but would be hard pressed to discuss it in the abstract... whereas setTimeout and setInterval have specific differences to point to.
fibbery··on Beer delivered to your work place every friday.
OK. Well, here are a few ads that list alcohol as a perk that I turned up with a 5min search.

fibbery··on Beer delivered to your work place every friday.
I guess you don't know many people who work in tech in SF, then... companies regularly list office beer as a job perk along with the snacks and pingpong. In fact, I've never worked anywhere where drinking wasn't a significant part of the culture, including office drinking, during office hours (at least on Fridays).
fibbery··on Dear Googles: G+/YouTube Anschluss – you've done outed me
I wish that were true. I have never enabled Google plus, yet there is a profile page out there for me. So when I got to plus.google.com I get the "Set up your account!" page but there is a link for me at https://profiles.google.com/[long number string] that has my full name and gender on it and I can't find any way to delete that profile.
