fiala__··on So Long, Macbook. Hello Again, Linux
I'm about to switch to Linux from my 2010 MBP (which is still basically working) and my main motivation is exactly the fact that "Just Works" no longer applies to MacBooks.

My £2800 company MBP has half-broken USB-C ports, malfunctioning Touch Bar, various audio issues, and I can't use Blender to render on the GPU because of Apple's shitty outdated OpenGL. I could have two Linux laptops with better specs for the price of this piece of fancy aluminium, and a similar amount of bugs/broken stuff.

fiala__··on Central Londoners to be subjected to facial recognition test this week
I wonder if there's a demonstrable correlation between level of police funding and support for such initiatives. In the UK's public sector there is definitely a strong drive for automation, but it does kind of coincide with austerity and drastic cuts in police services.
fiala__··on China ‘Is the Only One in the Race’ to Make Electric Buses, Taxis and Trucks
This is kind of similar to how the USSR industrialised in the 1930s. Western nations were simply stunned at the rate of change, and while we now know it was underscored by unspeakable atrocities, it still applies that such a tightly controlled economy can be very agile and responsive to threats such as climate change.

They've been in continuous use in Bratislava since the 1940s, and they also have the hybrid ones. They're especially suitable for steep slopes where rail-based transport doesn't work. Absolutely iconic vehicles!

Mastodon is cool, but it's far from immune to mob mentality – see Wil Wheaton thing a few months ago:

fiala__··on Viral “Manspreading” video is said to be staged Russian propaganda
I think the reason why a lot of this stuff is being called "Kremlin Propaganda" is that real Kremlin propaganda isn't really propaganda anymore. It's not necessarily coming from an evil troll factory in an imposing Petersburg tower. It's a lot more subtle and indirect – more of a cultural practice than a directed media effort – and it might not always be intentional, but people still need a way to link it to the power that benefits from it.

That said, there's a lot of this stuff being produced in western countries, including the EU. It just so happens that the plague of neoconservatism + political division has become state policy in Russia, so it makes sense for EU institutions (whose objective is political unity and inclusive welfare-oriented policy) would link it to the Russian state.

fiala__··on The 10:1 rule of writing and programming
This is very interesting! In film production, it is also a common rule of thumb that you film about 10 times more footage than you end up using.
fiala__··on Why the Web 3.0 Matters and you should know about it
1. jot down a bunch of buzzwords

2. come up with a buzzword that summarizes those buzzwords

3. put normal words between the buzzwords

4. take the paragraph PR emailed you earlier and insert it about 85% into the text

5. publish to Medium and post on HN

I love the idea of going back to a decentralised Web but I worry about it becoming just a way for the next generation of Silicon Valley kids to make billions. I would like to see more technical posts dealing with the actual workings of decentralised systems, rather than this mindless PR.

fiala__··on WebGPU demos
well that's precisely why the discussion is open – Apple can come in with their (arguably selfish) ideas, but they can't impose them on other big players such as MS, Google and Mozilla. In an ideal world this prevents the final common API from only working for one of them.

> but they're pretty transparent about it

They may be transparent about the fact that they're tracking you, but not about what they're tracking or when they're tracking it. And there's no way for you to find out because the vast majority of their software is not open source.

fiala__··on List Comprehension in Swift
it's an easy way to filter out odd/even numbers. `n % m` means "divide `n` by `m` and return the remainder". If you divide any even number by 2, the remainder is always 0, if you divide an odd number, it's always 1. Translate that to a boolean and you've got a nice odd/even filter.
fiala__··on JavaScript. The Core: 2nd Edition
It does now (ES2015 modules) but it was standardized too late, so people created their own solutions, and now it's super hard to implement the standard over them. That's why nodejs isn't transitioning to ES2015 modules anytime soon (although they're working on it).

looks interesting. What are the advantages of running such analysis on GitHub rather than locally?
fiala__··on Growing homeless camps contrast with West Coast tech wealth
not sure about the US, but in Europe you often have people begging on streets who are actually working for a group of (often foreign) criminals, who then collect the money and maybe provide the beggars with modest shelter/protection. There were speculations it could be a case of human trafficking.

Obviously that's a whole different kind of homelessness to what the article above is describing.

fiala__··on Does anyone remember websites?
Oh yes, totally forgot about flash and `<map>`s – but one could argue even those were originally designed to solve the problems of 'vanilla' HTML. They of course failed and HTML kind of prevailed, but only by being coupled with a massive set of APIs on the Web Platform. If it wasn't for those JS APIs, we might be stuck with Flash forever.
fiala__··on Does anyone remember websites?
Sure, but 100% unstyled HTML was extremely rare even in the 90s. The problem with everyone writing their own crap HTML is that the sites become terrible and unusable, because they lack good design. What platforms like Twitter/FB initially did was just provide a unified, usable interface to a certain kind of information. Compare to MySpace, which collapsed partly because vast amounts of the profile pages were horrible.
fiala__··on Does anyone remember websites?
> Most websites were written with html, so they were all unique.

Every single website on the internet always was, is and will be HTML (with various kinds of XML/SVG markup sometimes). People just gradually realised proper and standardised web design makes the Web better for everyone, by making it more usable and accessible.

I don't see why I should feel nostalgia for an Internet plagued by `<marquee>`s, poorly-laid out flashing gifs and bright yellow text on a white background.

fiala__··on Tech Giants, Once Seen as Saviors, Are Now Viewed as Threats
Subtle but powerful Russian interference on social networks and media of Western countries is a thing whether we like it or not. I'm skeptical of how much that's true for the US, but in Europe it's ubiquitous and there's a lot of hard evidence for it – I'm talking governments setting up agencies to deal with it, not Alex Jones-style hysteria.

some examples of the backlash:

can you elaborate on that last point? What does the EU have to do with this?
fiala__··on Facebook's tentacles reach further than people think
I'm skeptical as to how worthwhile your effort is as long as the outcome is just another alternative to FB. We've seen countless examples of how these alt-social nets failed. But I do see a lot of value in the tech you might be developing, and if in some way we could embed it into existing social nets, that would be amazing. Fingers crossed!
fiala__··on Made a small JavaScript library for smooth pretty drawing/handwriting on Canvas
To be honest I wouldn't mind switching to MIT. Let me know if you want to use it and I can relicense, no problem. Regarding lagginess, that should be a little bit better in the latest commit on master – it was because of the adaptive filter being too strong.
