fhbdukfrh··on Minimum unit pricing may have helped reduce alcohol-related deaths in Glasgow
I think it was sarcasm.
fhbdukfrh··on NPM CEO Bryan Bogensberger Resigned
Try reading that Twitter thread and count the number of times he mentions. "I" or "me" in the same sentence about how it's all about other npm employees and the greater community.

This is a textbook example of if (when!) you get let go you should strongly consider an internet moratorium.

fhbdukfrh··on Helsinki Central Library chosen as the best new public library
My love of wandering through the stacks of a library is definitely nostalgia-driven but there's something about being around mountains of books that is exciting. Probably the same reason people like old record stores, flea markets and bargain stores like winners...
fhbdukfrh··on Helsinki Central Library chosen as the best new public library
The Calgary public library has a pretty decent online holds system that will transfer physical goods to your local branch within a day or so. I've never been to out fancy new downtown branch that cost a fortune but hear the focus is definitely not on books or even media, but social activities. I find this disappointing because IMO we still need physical repositories of knowledge; they are the unifying hub around a broad audience but specific purpose
fhbdukfrh··on Lefthook: Knock your team’s code back into shape
Yep, that's kind of the point of upvotes or karma: You present your content and try to get people to buy it. Not sure where you get the negative sales page aspect though. I made no judgement on the presentation technique or quality, just that open source or not, they are still selling something.
fhbdukfrh··on Lambda School fined $75k by CA for operating without state approval [pdf]
The law has a few concrete, definitive truths but a huge volume of interpreted and subjective (and contradictory) statutes as well. Otherwise we wouldn't need lawyers in the first place
fhbdukfrh··on Payroll startup Gusto raises $200M
You're a software dev with 13 years experience and make $20/hour?

You've been significantly undervaluing yourself for a long time

fhbdukfrh··on Microsoft’s Q4 earnings and 2020 expectations
Not saying it could never happen, but in addition to being the architect of a renaissance at one of the biggest, must well-known companies in the world, Satya is also a mcrosoftie from pretty much birth. I think it would take a lot more than gobs of money to make him jump.
fhbdukfrh··on The U.S. Labor Market Isn’t All That Healthy
It's an anecdotal comment that treats "MBA" as some sort of discernible bucket. Don't call it a striking figure when it's a guess based on a single qualitative observation.
fhbdukfrh··on The best way to tour a city is through its grocery store
As a kid the differences between Canadian and American grocery stores was amazing. Especially chocolate bars.

Not so different anymore, aside from the prevalence of corn based sweeteners.

fhbdukfrh··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Is 130k realistic for someone with less than 2 years of not just experience but total exposure? I'm not aware of any market supporting that sort of value proposition; that's one hell of a book...
fhbdukfrh··on Give Your Yard Back to Nature
No one here is advocating untamed wilderness over a green sheet of lawn. You don't have to replicate impenetrable underbrush in your backyard. You could however focus on natural species and a broader variety
fhbdukfrh··on Give Your Yard Back to Nature
My advice? Cultivate crabgrass. It's green, grows without any care, drought resistant and lays low so no mowing.

Bonafides: 20 year homeowner with neighbors who have come to accept I'm not going to waste every weekend on yard care

fhbdukfrh··on World’s top bicycle maker is moving U.S. orders to Taiwan factory
While lots of cheap bicycles are made in China it's also where practically all high end carbon fiber bikes are made as well. Just like we discounted made in Japan a generation ago, we like to do the same with China today. It's true for some industries but just wishful thinking for many. Look at what's happening with Chinese cars for an example of rapid manufacturing improvement
fhbdukfrh··on I got asked LeetCode questions for a dev-ops systems engineering job today
This doesn't Test if they can develop software; this tests if they can diffuse a bomb.

Also there's no point in bringing someone in for an interview before they've shown any coding experience. It's a colossal waste of time for everyone, including the candidate

fhbdukfrh··on Peloton Confidentially Files Statement for Proposed IPO
And yet the global market for high end bikes is pretty tiny. There's been huge consolidation of big name brands under private equity as they try to build full range lifestyle portfolios, none of which are big enough to go public independently, yet somehow this niche combining fitness, stationary biking and home subscription has a big enough market for an IPO? Maybe, but I'm skeptical.
fhbdukfrh··on Peloton Confidentially Files Statement for Proposed IPO
This is definitely not the common path for hard core cycling aficionados... They're far more likely to buy a decent trainer for their expensive road bike than a clunky exercise bike, then compete online not attend a virtual spin class. The people i know use a semi permanent setup for the off season so it's not really a hassle and far more realistic.

I agree with an earlier comment that their target market is the same as meal services, and the value proposition is debatable.

fhbdukfrh··on Roads with protected bike lanes make both cycling and driving safer: study
The study supports safety for cyclists but i missed any reference to the safety for drivers that the article purports it found
fhbdukfrh··on Roads with protected bike lanes make both cycling and driving safer: study
I agree with your general sentiment, but don't think people on electric bikes are going to improve the situation, rather make it much, much worse based on the electric bike share pilot in my city. Someone who owns their ebike might be better, but those on shared bikes are a danger to everyone and never wear a helmet.
fhbdukfrh··on Roads with protected bike lanes make both cycling and driving safer: study
I agree. The biggest cause of issues between cars and bikes has got to be speed differential, so if I'm on the appropriate bike i always ride in traffic. The bike lanes always get the worst sections of road (the curb) with cracks, drains and debris, Plus cars right hooking you, a car door biting you or a jaywalker on their cellphone are not infrequent risks.

That said there is a big biking population who should not be riding in traffic so without separated bike lanes can't get to parts of my city

fhbdukfrh··on The Boring Company will develop an underground “people mover” for Las Vegas
They would spend all their time struggling to stay alive; no real science would ever get done. Look at the space station today. They're in a low earth orbit, completely dependent on resupply and accomplish very little other than siphon funding from unmanned exploration that actually leads to amazing breakthroughs because, "humans in space!"
fhbdukfrh··on Protect Gmail messages with confidential mode
You cannot be a employee of Google and "100% unrelated to this project". I understand you're not involved with it directly but you've obviously bought into the company, their mission and their methods.

As far as tinfoil hats (thanks for the assumption that anyone skeptical of Google's intentions is a crackpot) if this was not a net gain for them and merely a feature for enterprise compliance, why are they turning it on fit all Google apps clients by default? Under your charitable scenario they could offer it to those who need it without impacting us crazies.

fhbdukfrh··on “The Big Bang Theory” Normalized Nerd Culture
You just summarized the entire (very successful) career of the shows creator, Chuck Lorre.
fhbdukfrh··on “The Big Bang Theory” Normalized Nerd Culture
It normalized the stereotype of nerd culture.

Aside from being incredibly unfunny it completely misrepresented nerd culture and that's why it was so popular amongst the largely nerd-free network tv audience.

For a more accurate picture still taken to absurd extremes watch Mike Judge's silicon valley on HBO.

fhbdukfrh··on Technical Debt
The key defining characteristic of technical debt though is our inability to accurately estimate its true cost. If we could frame the question like you present it the battle would be won
fhbdukfrh··on Technical Debt
Is this actually true? The engine lives for multiple games, and the tooling is often reused as-is, but do games start with existing projects, or do we add new technical debt through the cleansing baptism of copy-paste?
fhbdukfrh··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
As soon as they always want the tablet you're better off compromising on Minecraft than fighting screen time head on
fhbdukfrh··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
You should give slime rancher a go. It has some neat mechanics while still being somewhat open world.
fhbdukfrh··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
If it makes you feel better go ahead. At best you're being kind of a dick to NO-REPLY@... At worst you're labeled a prima donna.

Politely decline and move on with your life.

fhbdukfrh··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
How many steps total? How long to get through the process? This may work for lower demand markets but sounds excessive in competitive regions.

We've been super successful in mining the late round rejections from companies like Google. Getting to an on-sight is a huge signaling factor, they do the early filtering and we can move fast to an offer
