feverishaaron··on Anatomy of long sales letter
It's interesting how people divide themselves into two separate camps when it comes to landing page/direct marketing (which are brothers of the same mother). The fact is, both longform and shortform work. But why they work and which context depends on the type of product you are offering and your sales model.

Long form works best for:

* Simple to understand products which have difficult to achieve benefits (weight loss pills, real estate riches courses). The idea is that once you find an interested party, it is just a matter of convincing him that YOUR SOLUTION is THE SOLUTION.

* The purchase process is single stepped with low time and mental effort involved on the part of the purchaser. (e-download, shipped product).

* It is really hard to sell services with the long form, although its been done. I'd still like to see a good example of a successful longform that sells a service, and analyse it to death.

Short form works best for:

* Complex sales where a conversion means pre-qualification, a phone call, question answering, a customized result (think general contractor), identity check or some other gate to completing the sale. The idea is just to give them just enough benefits that they feel both enticed and think it is low risk to give you their contact information. Almost all B2B sales fit in this category.

* Monthly services with a freemium model, and any other low risk opportunity to kick the tires.

* Items with a low purchase point and low effort checkout (App Store game).

That said, there are always exceptions to the rule, and you should test both forms of communication if you are unsure.

feverishaaron··on How To Start A Business With No Money
No doubt. Before taking that complicated step, throw the idea out there that you are willing to license it. Get a few developers to do that as single transactions, where you walk them through code integration. If it proves too popular for you to manage, you now know you have a market, and a reason to build out a full API and battle test it.
feverishaaron··on How To Start A Business With No Money
I would throw in a 37Signals quote in here and advise "sell your byproducts." There is money to be had from residual assets used in the process of building your main product.

Did you create some nifty icons, or write a custom graphing engine for your mobile app that looks really nice? Cool. Put up a Paypal-based checkout site. Sell licenses.

feverishaaron··on Why I never design a site in Photoshop
I get kind of annoyed with these smug, pseudo-contrarian articles about, what boils down to personal preference.

The right answer is: Use the right tool for the right job.

* If it's a simple brochureware template, you might be able to knock it out in HTML from the start.

* If it's graphically complicated, with a lot of rich visuals, starting in Photoshop or Fireworks may be your best bet.

* If it is an application with numerous cases and a potentially complicated interface, starting with a clickable modeling tool, like Axure, might be the wisest approach.

* Roll your own approach for a particular interface problem. Axure sucks for modeling mobile application interfaces, but hey, some dude figured out how to make a usable wireframing model with Keynote.

I've used all three methods, and each has their advantages and tradeoffs. Personal preference often dictates how we work, but the project requirements may force us to re-evaluate these preferences in favor of a more efficient means of completing the project.

feverishaaron··on Redditors earning $100k+ a year, what are your secrets to your success?
Be careful about chasing a dollar amount. $100K is pretty baseline for someone who has technical/design etc. skills. Moving into the $200K+ salary range often means working a lot of overtime, which leaves little time for enjoyable pursuits, or side projects which may eventually earn far more than that extra $100K a year.
feverishaaron··on Sometimes it pays to pay your web designer
I think this does more to tarnish the reputation of the web designer as an immature, spiteful person, instead of being a true business person. The best way to handle situations like these in my experiences is to take the site offline and say it is due to nonpayment, and provide a means to contact you discreetly. Then send the bill to a collections agency with a 33% markup to cover the collections costs. Most clients are honest, eager to correct what is most often a communication or clerical error.

I've experienced non-payment only a handful of times over 15+ years of freelancing. Barring bankruptcy, I have ALWAYS been paid by using these two tactics. If they go bankrupt, you will be just another creditor, and a low priority one at that, since there are no physical assets involved.

feverishaaron··on Ask HN: How expensive is living in Silicon Valley
We rent at $2,200.00/mo for a 4/2 in south sj. That would be 3-3.5k in mountain view or cupertino, when we looked in August. If you time it right, you can find cheaper places. The absolute worse time to move (highest rents) is right before school starts.

Gas is $3.15/gal right now.

Food is ranges from 0%-15% more than the midwest (our comparison point). Shopping at local markets and farmers markets for produce will save you quite a bit.

Other chain stores and casual restaurants seem to cost slightly more than we were used to paying.

Any service that requires direct labor (gardening, cleaning etc) is going to be significantly more expensive than other metros, because the base cost of living is so much higher.

feverishaaron··on A clever way to fight IE6
I do this as well, and have had the same experience. IE 6 support is suddenly no longer as important. I explain that I'll put a message up that directs the user to either upgrade their browser, install Chrome Frame or browse at their own peril.
feverishaaron··on Scott Adams: Future Jobs (and Irreplaceable Skill Sets)

feverishaaron··on What To Look For In A Technical Co-Founder
I'll add to the deadline section "the ability to actually ship." Beware of the brilliant computer scientist who is working on their baby, and sees the performance of their software as reflection of their character.

The software will never be "good enough" to release, and "no one will buy it" as it is. They'll run out of money before they actually launch anything.

feverishaaron··on This Is Why The American Dream Is Out Of Reach
I don't see him knocking schooling. Rather, he is criticizing seeking schooling for the sake of schooling.

And he has a valid point. There is very little economic benefit, outside of research and some professional fields, to pursue additional degrees.

feverishaaron··on Secret Code Phrases to Get What You Want from Your Graphic Designer
Designers also are typically not around to feel the repercussions of their designs, so they may think they are designing for other people when they are really going off of their own intuition. And let's face it, even those with the best design/marketing/usability/branding etc. intuition are often wrong (eg Steve Jobs/The Cube).

I tell my clients that results-oriented design is the way to go. Interfaces are never "done," and it pays to pay a designer to stick around and iterate after real-world testing is completed. Casual focus groups are a great way to start this process, often ensuring that you don't launch with a poor design out of the gate.

feverishaaron··on Secret Code Phrases to Get What You Want from Your Graphic Designer
I encourage clients to show it around. That's free user/focus testing.
feverishaaron··on Secret Code Phrases to Get What You Want from Your Graphic Designer
Here's a few more phrases:

"Here's 50% up front."

"I'll pay upon delivery."

"Let's set up a retainer."

These phrases get ya top priority. Fast.

feverishaaron··on Evolution of Web design
This looks like design trends of the non-designer. I've found that web design has improved greatly over the past few years, as best practices and technology have "aligned" with designers' vision.

feverishaaron··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
Looks like Apple has finally acknowledged what drives probably a very large percentage of their mac mini sales: Techies who want a mac-based bittorrent box hooked to their home theater. Now, if only it had Blu-Ray...
feverishaaron··on Dots Per Inch
People confuse PPI (pixels) and DPI (dots) all the time. Yes, a press might run at a higher DPI than 300, but a 300-400PPI image is generally considered sufficient for even coffee table book-quality printing.

feverishaaron··on Cause of YC/HN outage discovered
"Biting the hand that feeds you" seems like an appropriate analogy for arbitrarily shutting down this site without warning.
feverishaaron··on On Adobe, Flash CS5 and iPhone Applications
Many of the features in the .psd format are undocumented and proprietary, and some are not backwards compatible. Up until CS5, the .fla format was proprietary (it is now zipped XML, and I understand that there are undocumented features there too).

Ever try sharing an indesign file between different versions? You can't, even if they are one version off. Sure you can export XML, but again, it often doesn't retain the same layout.

Fireworks adds proprietary information to the PNG format, so you can't open those files in other editors without losing data.

feverishaaron··on On Adobe, Flash CS5 and iPhone Applications
I don't see the developer lock-in on the iPhone being much different from designer/developer lockin with the entire CS suite.

This just sounds like a poor sport who wasn't invited to the same type of party they are already throwing.

The "especially considering that it's in Boulder" statement really rubbed me wrong. The rate at which the Techstars founders are succeeding isn't surprising, if you look at the caliber of mentorship that's available in the area.

I'm originally from the SV, and am currently fairly active in the Boulder startup and tech community. I've been very impressed with the accessibility of prominent investors and successful founders in Boulder. There's the same type of geek magic here that the SV has. There's the same communal desire to help other startups succeed and grow, but with a tight-knit small-town feel.

If you haven't tried Boulder's tech community on for size, you really should. Hit http://boulder.me for more.

feverishaaron··on IE9 adds support for CSS3, denies importance of ACID3
The only way many of the laggards are going to upgrade is if their favorite sites stop working. I think soon it will become too expensive to hack n' test for four versions of IE, and companies will start dropping support for IE 6.
