fennecfoxy··on Show HN: How I topped the HuggingFace open LLM leaderboard on two gaming GPUs
I found this super interesting! Excellent writing! And I loved the cowboy quote, that was the best part; poor thing.

Now it's making me wonder - instead of smashing things together more violently for MoE type stuff, perhaps it's more effective to create better toolsets to allow us to analyse smaller models.

Then small models can be trained (faster & cheaper) to be excellent at very specific tasks or domains, the toolset used to identify the organ and organ selection layers, a larger Frankenstein's monster model can be stitched together from these organs with perhaps a little extra training/fine-tuning to improve its organ selection abilities.

That makes me imagine some sort of future of layer standardisation, in which for a standard and optimal architecture sets of layers can be dynamically downloaded, added, swapped out etc to maintain fastest inference speed whilst allowing for flexible skills. Almost like the concept of subagents but within the architecture of the model itself. Hmmm.

I'm only versed in transformer architecture at a high level, does anybody know of any architectures where the layers branch & then coalesce like that? Or is it majority linear layer by layer?

fennecfoxy··on No, it doesn't cost Anthropic $5k per Claude Code user
I mean sure, but in terms of cost per dollar/per watt of inference Nvidia's GPUs are pretty up there - unless China is pumping out domestic chips cheaply enough.

Also with Nvidia you get the efficiency of everything (including inference) built on/for Cuda, even efforts to catch AMD up are still ongoing afaik.

I wouldn't be surprised if things like DS were trained and now hosted on Nvidia hardware.

fennecfoxy··on The Government Told Courts It Could Easily Refund Tariffs. Now It Says It Can't
Tibetans, uyghurs, etc? Factories full of North Korean workers under the watchful eye of their overlords, modern slavery even of your own people.

As a Kiwi I look at the US, Russia, China, etc as the same. Even the UK (where I now live) is a scarier place than back home.

fennecfoxy··on Yann LeCun raises $1B to build AI that understands the physical world
Why world model? To emulate how we became sentient?

A "world" is just senses. In a way the context is one sense. A digital only world is still a world.

I think more success is in a model having high level needs and aspirations that are borne from lower level needs. Model architecture also needs to shift to multiple autonomous systems that interact, in the same ways our brains work - there's a lot under the surface inside our heads, it's not just "us" in there.

We only interact with our environment because of our low level needs, which are primarily: food, water. Secondary: mating. Tertiary: social/tribal credit (which can enable food, water and mating).

fennecfoxy··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
Lmao why. Stop driving through red light, stop speeding. Ya fuckers.

In the UK it's ridiculous, barely any speed cameras and those that are there are clearly marked (legally have to be). Everyone just slows down for the speed cameras and then start speeding again after.

I've actually heard people say that the above is effective because it makes people slow down where it's important. Or, you know how about people just don't fucken speed in general?

If it were up to me they'd be everywhere, totally unmarked and all revenue from fines would go to charitable causes to rule out the "but they just do it for da money!11" bs - no, they're doing it to stop people speeding and killing someone for fuck's sake.

Stop speeding.

fennecfoxy··on Learnings from paying artists royalties for AI-generated art
I think you mean LORAs more than a fine tune. Yes, plus there are plenty of online resources to train a LORA as well, CivitAI you can just give it a bunch of images + labels and it just does it for you, the bar is pretty low.
fennecfoxy··on Learnings from paying artists royalties for AI-generated art
I mean there's no point; everyone still gets super mad even in the cases where models where trained only on content that a company owns or has paid for.

I wish artists would stop with the "it stole our work bullshit" and just be more honest about the "it can do what we do and we're terrified and scare for our future" part.

Because that I can 100% understand, and contrary to previous jobs just disappearing, we do live in "the future" and things like UBI or free cross-training should be available for this sort of thing.

fennecfoxy··on Learnings from paying artists royalties for AI-generated art
Yeah as a furry (exposed to commission scene a lot) the number of commissions available for "Disney" or "Pixar" or whatever style art even before the whole AI era really tells you that they're hypocrites.
fennecfoxy··on No, it doesn't cost Anthropic $5k per Claude Code user
Never have I read something that screamed Bay Area more than this lmao.

I mean GN has covered the Nvidia black market in China enough that we pretty much know that they run on Nvidia hardware still.

>Realize the savings to be had moving "fixed infra" back on-premises or into a colo versus sticking with a public cloud provider

As other people have pointed out: what happens when the PSU or mobo shits itself, what happens when the new version of vmware or docker (or whatever) shits itself, etc

fennecfoxy··on Did Alibaba just kneecap its powerful Qwen AI team?
Not even corporate, that's just human behaviour/history.

We love to elect chest-beating leaders.

fennecfoxy··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
Yep people get promoted for bullshit throwaway projects that are built in the fastest & dirtiest way possible so that management can dance & clap about how brilliant everyone is about every 2-4 weeks.
fennecfoxy··on Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native
That's because "native" is still a fucking pain in the ass with few benefits.

Electron can be pretty performant if written well. The difference between Electron and native is that Electron you can write sloppily (more common) or performant, whereas it's in the nature of native to force you down the performant path (which expends a lot more time).

People used to joke about new Javascript frameworks, now with AI things are changing even faster and you really think it's worth investing time into a native app for something whose features are rapidly expanding and changing? That's bad software management.

If they're doing stupid things in terms of performance then by all means they should fix that but Electron isn't inherently bad.

fennecfoxy··on The next era of social media: built and run in Europe, ruled by our laws
Human social culture is not ready for this sort of thing.

We love to pretend that we're all for free speech; but our species are too tribal and we'll never escape it.

We are not a socially mature species in the slightest.

fennecfoxy··on Giving LLMs a personality is just good engineering
It's not just a paradigm shift — it's a new world order.
fennecfoxy··on Agentic Engineering Patterns
This sort of thing is available using utilities like spec kit/spec kitty/etc. But yes it does make it do better, including writing its own checklists so that it comes back to the tasks it identified early on without distraction.

Reading this thread as a furry is...interesting.
fennecfoxy··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
Tbf batteries last quite a while...current ones maybe not 20 years of hard driving, but near-future battery tech seem like they'd be able to handle it.

I'd be more concerned about the underlying skateboard of the car; all the mechanical bits & bobs that are still required for an electric car i.e. the "car" part. I feel like new Chinese manufacturers' skateboard will be hugely inconsistent over time, whereas you find that consistency with established manufacturers - for example many EVs started out built on top of a manufacturer's existing platform.

fennecfoxy··on eBay explicitly bans AI "buy for me" agents in user agreement update
...that's what auctions are...being around to bid...
fennecfoxy··on I was a top 0.01% Cursor user, then switched to Claude Code 2.0
Not only that but I find ChatGPT (and LLMs in general) a great partner to discuss my existing ideas with, with the general idea of getting it to challenge me on my decisions and provide ideas that I can shoot down (or make me think "actually...that could work".

I think LLMs are much more effective when you have a good understanding of a field and can work in the above way; their assistance is useful because I don't have time or brainpower to be an _expert_ in many of the fields I'm _knowledgable_ in.

fennecfoxy··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
>every week I see a new Chinese brand on the road

And I think the difference is going to be apparent 15-20 years from now when new parts are needed for these models.

With the big boys like Ford, Toyota etc I can trust that they manufactured (and still manufacture) parts with warehouses full of them and I can always find the part I need to repair a vehicle.

I very much doubt that we will see the same thing with Chinese auto companies, even premier ones like BYD.

fennecfoxy··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
I think people would have reacted a lot more positively if you'd said right up front in the first line "hey look guys, yes I wrote this with ChatGPT but I am not a native English speaker so I've used AI to translate"

Otherwise it feels deceptive. Which is surprising given we should judge off intentions and not augmentation (like come on guys this is HN FFS).

This guy's not running any ads on the site, hasn't spammed with multiple posts that I've seen. I still think investment funds/modern stock exchanges are needless parasites upon society but that's just my opinion.

fennecfoxy··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
Well realistically just ban imports. But then people will import them criminally anyway. And to your point; what if Chinese companies assist in evading import bans or customs, as they do now and have done for decades.

Even in the UK, they've added restrictions to it but...surprise, surprise the Turkish/Kurdish corner shops all have a steady supply, with nothing being done about it. As a foreigner living here it's honestly pathetic how disengaged the public here are with things like that. People drive like absolute wankers, too.

fennecfoxy··on SparkFun Officially Dropping AdaFruit due to CoC Violation
Tbh I think both of y'all are a boon to people mucking about with hardware and that petty arguments, MBA parasite stuff, etc is all counterproductive but fight all you like.

I stopped buying stuff from SF/AF ages ago as I find it all overpriced for the most part (for my use cases). But then again I've not been doing too many hardware projects recently anyway.

Odd situation tho, both have been bastions of this stuff since forever.

fennecfoxy··on SparkFun Officially Dropping AdaFruit due to CoC Violation
Agree, it makes it seem like the individual is "one of us" and that what they're saying is a little more raw/genuine.

"They're being mean to me." vs "theyre being mean to me".

fennecfoxy··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
Idt that's it, at least in my experience.

I scan as fast as a manned checkout (I did my time in retail). And I can scan my groceries at the speed whilst the people next to me spend most of their time rotating an item to find the barcode.

fennecfoxy··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
>These people shape the culture that the young people around you consume. They create the memes of six-seven-ification.

I'd disagree, six-seven-ification is caused by the human desire for clout and tribal motivations - I'd argue that social currency is the reason people pursue fiat currency; ask yourself this, if I have you $100 billion, but you could not interact with any human beings from then on, would that $100 billion still matter?

Rather than influencers forcing memes, "six-seven-ification" arises organically from the authors' pursuing of belonging/clout within a tribe. What I would say is more interesting is that the lifetime of such cultural outputs is becoming more and more fleeting.

For Millenials & gen X our memes seemed to have quite a bit of permanence over the years. For the boomers and silent generations before us, their cultures were even more static (and traditional) by comparison. For gen z/a it seems their cultural language changes month to month, sometimes week to week.

Memes aren't enjoyed for years now, they're enjoyed for a few months. Horizontally spinning rat, Coffin dance, etc are all ancient history now.

And you can see the reaction to this; there are spikes in search interest on a lot of classic (2005-2015) memes, Gen Z is desperately embracing retro tech like camcorders, polaroids and 90s/00s outfits in a snap back to reality. The gravity of this cannot be understated.

Mom's spaghetti.

fennecfoxy··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
Hmm. I'm building something (quick and dirty) at the moment that looks at analysing customer service data.

Something like this is promising but from what I can see, still lacking. So far I've been dealing with the regular issues (models aren't actually that smart, work with their strengths and weaknesses) but also more of the data problem - simple embeddings just aren't enough, imo. And throwing all of the data at the model is just asking for context poisoning, hallucinations and incorrect conclusions.

Been playing with instruction tuned embeddings/sentiment and almost building a sort of "multimodal" system of embedding to use with RAG/db calls. What I call "Data hiding" as well - allowing the model to see the shape of the data but not the data itself, except only when directly relevant.
