Gay furry. I swear a lot; it's cultural.

fennecfoxy··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
My crotchety old neighbours just got one of those high pitched anti-fox speakers.

Was mowing the lawns the other day and could still hear the high pitched tones it emits even with noise cancelling headphones on.

Situation is pretty lame because I liked the foxes sleeping in the garden, super fun to take photos of them and they don't do much harm.

Okay, Bukowski.
fennecfoxy··on Identify a London Underground Line just by listening to it
Eh they all sound like SCREEEEEHEEEEECHCCCCHEEEEEE now anyway because TFL are incapable of doing basic maintenance overnight (such as grinding the rails) without using expensive contractors that eat money up.

After being in Paris over the weekend the state of the underground cleanliness/noise is just absolutely shameful.

Because just like Disney+, Netflix, Prime without ads, Apple TV, ... I'm not paying for a whole ass subscription just to look at 1 thing maybe once or twice a year. Especially when the majority of content isn't their reporting but rewriting others' work (also why output of models trained on public data should never be copyrightable).

And this just comes down to gatekeeping in the art world, something that they've always been very good at. Anyone can Pollockurbate over a blank canvas, but it takes credentials to make it "art".

And let's be honest, the negative reaction to AI is for art as a career (which has been long dying), not art for the sake of art. The few that are more concerned with the latter are the true gatekeepers.

Nice word jumble, you'd make an LLM proud. But it doesn't make what you've said profound.
fennecfoxy··on Ollama is now powered by MLX on Apple Silicon in preview
I agree. In my experience on a macbook as well it can be terrifically hard to get some models to run properly on gpu w/ ollama, let alone containerised ollama.
fennecfoxy··on Box of Secrets: Discreetly modding an apartment intercom to work with Apple Home
Oh yeah for sure and if they had come back with "oh yeah we only had that" (they did) I would've been like "ah okay makes sense!"

But for people to react negatively to my comment in the first place is hilarious and predictable human behaviour. Honestly it doesn't really necessitate explanation, imo.

fennecfoxy··on AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion
Yes turns out humans are just dumb animals with a limited attention span and capacity for knowledge. We act like we're civilised, but look at the state of the world lmao. The "me and mine" attitude applies broadly across the HN audience as well; just look at the responses I've gotten when I've suggested that it should be illegal to own second homes in the middle of a housing crisis. We're all in it for ourselves and work together only enough to benefit our tribe, like animals.

I, of course, include myself in this as well. Give me dat dopamine and serotonin!

fennecfoxy··on AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion
Eh, this has happened before, is happening now and will happen again. The articles always act like the users affected were of average intelligence and or completely sound mind; I don't think that this is true at all.

And there are millions of people who chat with AI each day who do not run into any issues like this at all.

So all of these articles are just more playing on the hype of "ooohohooh AI did this ooohohoh so scary new technology!"

When it's like...probably more than 100k people use a circular saw each day...but a very small portion of those are going to injure or maim themselves in an accident while using it.

Look at the number of vehicular deaths compared to AI, looks like deaths directly caused or inspired by AI are at about 1-4/year recently and that's all internationally...2024 only just the UK had 1,602 road deaths.

I feel like at its core its a mental health/isolation problem and that our species' refusal at large to address mental health is the real meat of the issue.

ESP8266 came out 2014, around the same time as the first Pi, besides the myriad of wifi enabled uc options before that. First Arduino (let's say for ease of use) with wifi built in was 2013.

Lmao people already getting mad. It's honestly just way simpler doing something like that with a microcontroller/realtime rather than a pi running all sorts of processes/reboots/sd card issues etc.

fennecfoxy··on What young workers are doing to AI-proof themselves
No, what I'm really saying is that the baseline of plat growing is "it works by itself". Anything above letting nature take its course is a force multiplier.

As opposed to other technologies; microchips do not grow on trees.

fennecfoxy··on Box of Secrets: Discreetly modding an apartment intercom to work with Apple Home
Meh. Plenty of landlords suck, if anything his only mistake was not making it available to others in the same building.

The last apartment I rented (London) I never even met my shitty landlord hiding all the way up in Scotland. Randomly one day after getting home from a long day at work, my fob wouldn't let me in at the front door. Message the landlord ("SMS only, no calls") and it turns out that he'd got another copy made in case he needed it - when he got this copy made, the security company disabled the current fob (my one).

Initially he was going to make me wait until a new fob could be sorted out. After much anger and aggression I got his fob sent down to me in the post. Was still not able to access my home for several days and had to emergency crash with some friends.

Didn't get a discount on the rent and the fucker came up with every excuse under the sun to take my security deposit upon moving out as well.

fennecfoxy··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
So with existing speed cameras your solution for your supposed privacy is what? Standing between the cameras?

As always the problem is never with the technology it's the stupid human part of the system that's the problem. The fact that is technology is misused to surveil people illegally that the repercussions for a biz involved (because all those taxpayer dollars gotta go into private biz!) then that company maybe receives a slap on the wrist, a fine that's maybe 1-2% of their revenue if that, and all the execs get off scot free.

Not to mention all those in government/well to-do "won't somebody please think of the children" would still love for such systems to be used to monitor people.

I guess yeah, you're right. Humans cannot be trusted not to fuck each other over. If we surveil to prevent dangerous driving people will use it for bad. If we don't surveil then people will speed and kill others with their cars.

Our species is lose-lose.

fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
A friend was telling me yesterday that this is how you can set custom ringtones on iOS. He seemed really excited about it, how cute.

Because I literally could not believe the archaic process previously used until very recently to set a ringtone on iOS. And now it's under the share menu?! Why do Apple people put up with this shit?

I've been able to set a custom ringtone in Android from the OS settings/any file browser app for at least 15 years and I would not be surprised if Android launched with it.

>Apple still sells 30-second song ringtones for $1.29 each through the iTunes Store app.

Oh...alright well now we know why.

fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
Native apps were never a part of the original iPhone release, all the apps were essentially web apps, running one at a time (no multi-tasking/running in background unlike it being built into Android from the get-go).
fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
To your last point surely it makes sense that they'd probably be rolling something like RN or similar where at that point they may as well build for Android app as well right?

Versus with proper PWA support across the board, a single button on the company's site that installs a PWA no matter which platform your customers are on.

fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
Are you mad because they probably found the same thing I did when doing web stuff that had to run on iOS (going as far back as about 2012~) that iOS required so much more hoop jumping, hacks, polyfills etc? It was just assumed that every other platform worked fine, time was always allocated for inevitable issues on mobile Safari.
fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
Nonsense. Firefox on Android (and I'm sure everywhere else) allows endless redirects without prompting me about the redirect, sending me to sites I never wanted to go to.

And even then, where does one draw the line on "privacy"? Especially given that every other app on the user's phone is granted every permission under the sun and feeding on as much data as possible.

The core of the problem isn't supporting web bluetooth etc or not...the core of the problem is that dumbass humans will go "yes use all the permissions" because their hands are already shaking from tiktok withdrawal.

fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
WebUSB/Bluetooth/NFC/PWAs are an excellent idea.

Not if it's an Open Source project made by a bunch of people for the love of the game. Install a PWA and you have it even when the site is down, if not code available on GH. It's possible to do on a computer (write code and distribute an app not via an app store)...but not in the magical protected-profits land of mobile devices.

Your way of thinking is the reason why we now have a half dozen trillion dollar companies controlling the world.

fennecfoxy··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
>and because of the difficulty of meaningfully asking the user for permission to share or write data when the browser cannot explain to the user what is being shared or written

So fucking moronic privacy virtue signalling BS holding technology back.

They're doing the same thing with Web Bluetooth.

"hurr de durr we can't ask permission" Yes you fucking can, you give me a modal to confirm leaving the current page and being redirected to a new one (in some cases, but not all), you give me a pop up when a site asks to send shitty notifications (as they all do).

An app can sit and use nfc/bluetooth in the background all day long...a site can only do it while I actually have it open in the browser and presumably it's foregrounded etc.

It's really, really NOT hard for them to implement this stuff & I feel like it's less "this tech that has been in phones for more than a decade is unsafe!" and more "we need to cry about features that Chrome is pushing for us to support because otherwise we're letting them lead".

fennecfoxy··on What young workers are doing to AI-proof themselves
You would vote. Everyone else would vote for "their party" regardless of policy cause tribalism. Plus politics always follows the same old pattern "AI took your jobs? We generate food etc so cheaply now it may as well be free? Our robots could be building human shelters for free? Those are _small_ problems, if I get in I'll stop those dirty immigrants coming in! I'll make it so that men act like men and women act like women and they both use the correct bathroom! I'll get rid of the gays, too!"

And it's not even just the right leaning that are tricked. The left get thrown a bone now & then on some trivial thing like getting gay marriage (which shouldn't have even been an argument, more of a realisation) meanwhile nothing is done about corporate tax evasion, improving labour laws etc - or they lean too far into their voterbase and allow rampant immigration, welfare handouts without checks & balances etc.

And all of this because managing a large group of human is pretty much impossible. We need to reorganise into smaller groups.

fennecfoxy··on What young workers are doing to AI-proof themselves

fennecfoxy··on Walmart: ChatGPT checkout converted 3x worse than website
Not really many details...

Perhaps clickthrough is worse because there are fewer dark patterns involved and people are mostly just browsing and occasionally buying only what they need.

They didn't really seem to specify the "why" of it with any research. And weird that OAI wasn't supporting them to see wha the issue was.

>Students can be trusted to obey a simple "no phones in class" rule.

fennecfoxy··on Learnings from paying artists royalties for AI-generated art
I don't think mass production cheapens the handcrafted experience. Just because a factory can pump out cheap shoes doesn't mean it's no longer enjoyable to buy, own and experience a handmade pair of leather shoes; it's only that the reason for buying them becomes different (necessity vs. luxury).

The Ghibli thing is a great example; who's still actually doing that? It was a passing fad.

But let's not pretend that that passing fad has changed the fact that Ghibli's films are absolute masterpieces that will continue being enjoyed by generations to come. Because they are and still are.

fennecfoxy··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
>You say it yourself that everyone just speeds up after the camera

...because they know where it is and there are so few of them...

Humans are very good at trying to get away with things. The only way to solve speeding is for people to receive the fines, receive the points on their license. They only speed because they're selfish fucks and because it's so easy to get away with it.

>forces sparsity

That's branching and then coalescing, right? It selects a path that is weighted as being most beneficial to the input?

Given you pointed out how even the vertical part of the architecture allows for skipping layers anyway, isn't that essentially the same thing?

fennecfoxy··on Show HN: How I topped the HuggingFace open LLM leaderboard on two gaming GPUs
How about, as you found repeating x-y was useful for locating the block of 7 layers in the first place; I'd be incredibly curious if, knowing that block of 7, if you then iterated from repeating x-y in that block z times.

Like for those 7 layers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 does efficiency increase if you run 1,2,3,3,4,4,4,5,6,7 or perhaps 1,2,3,3,4,5,6,6,7 etc. If only GPUs grew on trees

fennecfoxy··on Show HN: How I topped the HuggingFace open LLM leaderboard on two gaming GPUs
I wouldn't be surprised if even in the same model, the organ block size varied wildly depending on what you're looking for (i.e. his probes).

But if there are sizes that are common, then that could also point to an architectural flaw, because whilst it could be universal constant-ness it could also be bounded by some inner working - and perhaps this is something that could be improved upon.
