fennecbutt··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
>Yet the answers will get outdated quickly whilst the silicon is fixed.

Bro is living in 2020 before rag was widely introduced.

fennecbutt··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
I mean the ultimate goal is still to surely have literally that. A solid state battery.

Tbf just like computronium, I actually don't care if my battery is liquid or solid but that almost every atom or molecule that makes up the battery is used for that purpose. I guess we could call it powertronium!

fennecbutt··on Apple's iCloud File Sharing Left Ex-Employees with Access to Secret Documents
>ensure that fired employees still have access to secret files

>if employee shit talks us or leaks skeletons in our closet we can sue them for accessing secret company info after being fired

fennecbutt··on Everyone is building LLM routers, we deprecated ours
This is a problem we're looking at atm. We want to start running evaluations as we're having problems with consistency across releases even just for individual agents.
fennecbutt··on Run Kimi K3 using 29 GB of RAM at 0.50 tok/s
Idk about you guys but I'd find 0.5t/s useless. Even for long tasks.

I'd rather just shell out the money to offload as much as possible to say 2x 4060ti 16gb with tensor parallelisation. Anything but that low token rate.

This is the sort of thing I'd expect in 20 years for some cyberpunk esque "turtlebot" that thinks at 0.5t/s, is solar powered and performs some menial civic maintenance background task like cutting grass, or scrubbing pavements. Or the "slowbot" that sits in the garden slowly pruning a bonsai, only just keeping up with the growth of the young plant.

fennecbutt··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
"our best java script people" I've used node.js for more than a decade now, I was there for the start of "now everyone is truly full stack"...but yes the majority of developers I've worked with have had no idea about how js etc works on the inside, no knowledge of event loop or what causes the few memory leaks possible in js.

But then again I only know because I love that shit and started out in c/embedded, c# etc. And on my own weak side I fucken suuuuck at frontend related stuff (not the design stuff at all, just...fuck you css).

fennecbutt··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
That's just conjecture though surely. Like not saying you're wrong but the same thing would result from crawling and using results from Chinese Web for training along with everything else. If the most prevalent model people are posting responses from online in Chinese is qwen then of course that would happen. There's no evidence to say either way really.
fennecbutt··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I mean I think the primary reason is really the attention is all you need paper and meta's "leaking" of meta's llama.

China is plenty happy to steal IP and just say "this is just how business is done in China it's a cultural thing" but quickly run to defend their own IP in western courts when stolen by western businesses. It works one way.

And I have experienced this firsthand when having something manufactured there. Exact clones appearing on Alibaba just days after.

fennecbutt··on UK to Scrap Digital ID
That wasn't my point at all.

My point was, there are the application/validation systems and manufacturing already set up for driver's licenses.

Anybody can apply for a provisional driver's license. That provisional driver's license is an acceptable form of photo id that shows your age, address etc already.

So there is no need for an alternative/new system. If they want a "id" version of the provisional driver's license in terms of style/what gets printed then it's an easy/small modification.

Sure not everyone has a driver's license, but anybody can apply for one. If you don't know what a provisional driver's license is, then please look it up...

fennecbutt··on UK to Scrap Digital ID
I really do hope binface gets in because he's just a regular dude with similar sensibilities to most people actually living in their community.

But then I saw the interviews run on residents and who they'll be voting for, most of them creaky pensioners and most of them saying something like "I don't know anything about what's happening but I'm going to vote for Farage again anyway". I won't be surprised at all if Farage gets in again, tribalism and apathy strikes again.

fennecbutt··on UK to Scrap Digital ID
Good in that I'm disappointed it was ever gonna be a thing. Especially since they probably had some disgustingly expensive parasite private contractor lined up to do the ids.

WE ALREADY HAVE DRIVERS LICENSES. Just like when I was living in NZ we had the HANZ 18+ card, they can do similar in UK. In fact a provisional drivers license is easy to apply for and the system is already set up to take applications, make the cards etc.

British citizens seem perfectly fine with government wasting money tho. Doesn't matter which political party either, they're all inept cocks.

fennecbutt··on The Computer at the Bottom of a Canal
Yeah but it's not really a lateral flow of water when the locks fill up and empty.
fennecbutt··on South Korea to spend $1T on more memory chip production and humanoid robots
I've been involved in the train industry before, not heavy industry yet unfortunately.

And I can tell you that it doesn't matter how many advancements are made, thr hardware on the trains will be at least a decade behind. Siemens do be like that.

fennecbutt··on Amazon will stop accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk
Oh my goooood, the average Asian person eats more rice than they do bread.
fennecbutt··on AMD Ryzen AI Halo – $4k AI Dev Kit
Not really. I imagine demand for AI just from China would eat up their entire production let alone demand from the west.

And after all, that demand from consumers.

fennecbutt··on AMD Ryzen AI Halo – $4k AI Dev Kit
Eww, LTT.
fennecbutt··on South Korea to spend $1T on more memory chip production and humanoid robots
That's not really a gotcha, because my train doesn't need a TB of dram.
fennecbutt··on Why narcissistic leaders resist remote work
Doesn't really need more words to explain it than "do what I say".
fennecbutt··on South Korea to spend $1T on more memory chip production and humanoid robots
Memory has only really recently become lucrative. Germany still has heavy machinery, trains, drilling machines etc all of which will be needed for a long time regardless of whether the "bubble pops" or not.
fennecbutt··on Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron Sued in US over Memory Price Fixing
>the gravy train isn’t going to last forever.

Have you seen how the modern stock markets works lmao? It hasn't been based on reality in a long time.

Hell just look at Trump, should've run outta money from all his bad deals ages ago but the grift continues.

fennecbutt··on Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron Sued in US over Memory Price Fixing
>Harm does not mean a PlayStation 5 is now $200 more expensive or that inflation exists.

Yes it does lmao. If consumers can't get access to devices then they cannot be used for work or education. It's counterproductive.

How many "attention is all you need" papers aren't being written because as soon as there's a sniff of money the rabid suit and tie MBA fucks leap onto any opportunity like a dog in heat and fuck it to death.

fennecbutt··on AMD Strix Halo RDMA Cluster Setup Guide
For that price surely you get the rtx pro with like 96GB and vastly superior compute?
fennecbutt··on AMD Strix Halo RDMA Cluster Setup Guide
Are they fairly reasonable performance from your experience?

I'm about to move house and one of the things I want is better local AI. Ideally running a variety of smaller models at the same time, but occasionally one larger one. 128GB unified is pretty appealing, but for the price I can also get a handful of 5060 ti 16GB which give vastly better compute/inference speed.

Seen a few reviews of the strix halo boards from people complaining the tps is too low so definitely keen to hear others' experiences with em.

fennecbutt··on Show HN: Overfitted a 900KB Transformer to Compress a 100MB CSV into 7MB

fennecbutt··on Hey Nico, you didn't vibe code your data room but stole it from Papermark
Lmao tech money is fake. Look at how much AI companies are throwing around. Musk is personally worth 1T now supposedly.

It's all virtual valuations. The stock market is poison but most people on here won't admit to that because they have their own interests in it. What a joke our species is lmao. We're still grabbing big sticks to hit each other with and worrying about our neighbors coming to take our rocks because we're all just monkeys still, even though we pretend we're not.

fennecbutt··on What happened after 2k people tried to hack my AI assistant
I mean it's interesting because of the way they work.

If people can be tricked by an AI generated voice over the phone, or misinformation generated by human or by AI, then we're already holding AI to a higher standard.

I would say in the same way that I look at my boss who I work for and can identify them that way, then of course I'll be like "yup I can do that for you".

Models aren't trained to be suspicious, that's what guardrails are for. Our brains are comprised of so many specialised areas and I'm fine with the same concept for AI.

I would country passing a token/authentication of some kind as a part of guardrails. Without guardrails an AI model is like a human brain missing a lot of the areas around suspicion, identification, rules etc. Only the "eager to please" centers remaining.

I feel like the easiest way to achieve this is in-harness, start with a core prompt and minimal tools, extensions to prompt, relaxed guardrails and additional tools should be controlled by the harness itself, when a token is passed, or a camera indicates an identified face match, etc.

fennecbutt··on OpenAI unveils its first custom chip, built by Broadcom
I mean I'd love to be able to buy something like the 17k tps taalas chip as a pcie or m.2.

Imagine when we can roar along at that speed, low power. Can just have the model reason for a while about anything and everything. It reminds me of the "race to idle" for mcus etc.
