felineflock··on Elliptic Curves as Art
I thought of printing some of those in a t-shirt but someone would probably see it as branding for an extra-terrestrial donut shop.

The kind that would serve coffee in a Klein bottle.

felineflock··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
Yes, it is not possible. We can't predict but can follow the trends. Governments tend to want to be seen as a god-like entity protector/judge of all. So they hate satire or anything that means they're not being taken seriously. Just recently Brazil decided to jail a comedian, for instance.

I will spend this weekend creating burner social media accounts for my kids as a precaution. Each one will be crafted to look like they've never had a controversial thought in their lives.

Just lasagna pics, birthday cakes, kittens, golden retrievers, baby goats, maybe an artsy photo of a leaf with #blessed.

Everything I can do so that an AI running immigration background checks might match my kids to the profile of a low threat, emotionally well-regulated, consumer-minded citizen material.

Absolutely no pictures of Winnie the Pooh to keep China travel option open too.

I welcome any tips. Someone here must have cracked the code to be completely unremarkable and "wholesome" to governments.

felineflock··on Smalltalk, Haskell and Lisp
I honestly expected the article to start like

Smalltalk, Haskell, and Lisp

...walk into a bar.

Smalltalk: “Bartender, please send an instance of Martini to me - selector withOlive: set to true.”

Haskell: “I’ll take beer >>= chill, but only if it’s defined for all inputs and returns IO ().”

Lisp: “(drink ’(ale (temperature cold))) .”

The bartender mutters, “Great ... an object, a functor, and a list.”

Then a janitor walks by sweeping the closures that they left.

felineflock··on Builder.ai Collapses: $1.5B 'AI' Startup Exposed as 'Indians'?
Not to confuse with builder.IO - poor founder was posting these days "FOR THE LAST TIME GUYS THIS IS A DIFFERENT COMPANY".
felineflock··on CSS Minecraft
Please tell me if I understood it correctly:

It implements voxels via <input type="radio" />.

Each of the faces of each voxel is configured via <label>s, one for each face having a different CSS class.

There is a voxel for each type of block (dirt, grass, stone, etc) and only one is activated at a time.

The <input>s are arranged in a 9x9 grid 10 blocks tall times the number of different types of blocks (about 6500 total).

All that is enclosed with <div>s with CSS classes that respond to the camera navigation (look up/down, move up/down, forward/back, clockwise/counter)

That is brilliant!

With mentorship from Caltech and access to data from NASA’s NEOWISE mission, Matteo created a machine learning algorithm and compiled a groundbreaking database called VarWISE.

felineflock··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
About a year ago the Ford CEO (who is also Chris Farley's cousin) explained why legacy car manufacturers could not make good software: each of their cars have 150+ modules, each of them from several suppliers, each of them writing their own software.

For every software change on each module, they have to go to a supplier to ask because of IP rights.

That is why Ford is/was trying to build a new generation of modules with in-house software which they never wrote before.

felineflock··on US vs. Google amicus curiae brief of Y Combinator in support of plaintiffs [pdf]
YC should benefit most from an ecosystem where distribution channels (search, ads, etc) are not monopolized.

Startups ideally should compete on merit, not on whether they are eventually allowed access to Google’s platforms or get acquired. Startups can still exit via IPO, PE acquisition, cross-industry buyers or M&A.

From this POV, Google’s control over the adtech stack may be seen as gatekeeping digital advertising, which many YC companies rely on.

felineflock··on A single line of code cost $8000
From the article: "While refactoring it, I forgot to add the code to stop the 5-minute interval after the new version file was available and downloaded. It meant the app was downloading the same 250MB file, over and over again, every 5 minutes."

felineflock··on Thank you for holding my duck (2021)
Sometimes posting my problem/question in Slack causes me to figure out the solution by myself not too long after.

It feels like God wants me to expose my ignorance/inability in public first and only then reward my "humility" with a solution directly in my brain.

felineflock··on Why I'll Never Buy an Asus Laptop Again
Good to know.

I ended up buying an Acer because I had an Acer tablet that stopped working after the warranty expired and they fixed it free of charge.
