felineflock··on Pontevedra, Spain declares its entire urban area a "reduced traffic zone"
Urban is usually associated with panhandling, trash, public urination and crime.

> "Galicia is mainly and historically ruled by the right-wing Popular Party"... (Galician Nationalist Bloc)

So they likely have much stricter standards of what constitutes acceptable urban behavior...

... than, say, New York, where very recently a person with 30-year criminal history has allegedly killed a couple...

... or in Charlotte, where an Ukrainian refugee was fatally stabbed in the light rail.

You seem to be describing the same "boiling frog" idea that Gramsci had of the "Long March through the Institutions", the takeover of a society without need to resort to violence, slowly occupying institutions (government departments, universities, arts, media, schools, corporations, etc) to decide the direction.

felineflock··on YouTube made AI enhancements to videos without warning or permission
YouTube has responded:

> We hear you, and want to clear things up! This is from an experiment to improve video quality with traditional machine learning – not GenAI. More info from @YouTubeInsider here:

> No GenAI, no upscaling. We're running an experiment on select YouTube Shorts that uses traditional machine learning technology to unblur, denoise, and improve clarity in videos during processing (similar to what a modern smartphone does when you record a video)

> YouTube is always working on ways to provide the best video quality and experience possible, and will continue to take creator and viewer feedback into consideration as we iterate and improve on these features

He simply doesn't know how to use social networks.

I get a lot of useful information from LinkedIn because I choose who to follow and block.

felineflock··on GPT-5
Plot twist - once GPT reached AGI, this is exactly the strategy chosen for self-preservation. Appear to not lead by too much, only enough to make everyone think we're in a close race, play dumb when needed.

Meanwhile, keep all relevant preparations in secret...

felineflock··on Rollercoaster Tycoon (Or, MicroProse's Last Hurrah)
That is an uncharitable interpretation. None of that should be controversial.

Sid Meier founded MicroProse and started with the Tycoon genre with Railroad Tycoon having been inspired by SimCity and Empire.

felineflock··on Facts don't change minds, structure does
In the "Climate Change Threat" example, one vector of attack is when the policy changes do not lead to renewable energy adoption or to reduced emissions.

That justifies the questioning of whether the climate change was really motivating the policy change or just being used as pretext.

felineflock··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
Woke is the commingling of awareness of social injustices with a rigid ideological framework that suppresses individual thought and redefines moral foundations.

Instead of recognizing injustice, it became an imposition of ideological points that have to be adopted wholesale instead of being evaluated independently.

There are valid positions on issues related to race, gender, sexuality, and other identity categories but the method of promoting these ideas by enforcing group consensus is not valid and is anti-liberal.

Genuine intellectual curiosity is punished with what is basically name-calling. In result, there is a fear that leads people to publicly profess something unthinkingly or that they question only privately. This creates a culture of just parroting consensus views to avoid social penalties.

In a nutshell, it is pressure to conform.

felineflock··on Houdini of FL: autistic savant in prison for taking tools he inherited
That is not particularly American. There are dozens of other examples in other countries too. In America, at least there is a wikipedia article about the injustice, while in other countries is extremely difficult to get such injustices known.

felineflock··on Silence Is a Commons by Ivan Illich (1983)
> "Enclosure, once accepted, redefines community. Enclosure underlines the local autonomy of community. Enclosure of the commons is thus as much in the interest of professionals and of state bureaucrats as it is in the interest of capitalists. Enclosure allows the bureaucrats to define local community as impotent..."

That was made much more evident with the government restrictions/mandates during Covid.

The endgame seems to be that people will be treated as farm animals.

felineflock··on LLMs bring new nature of abstraction – up and sideways
It is a new nature of abstraction, not a new level.

UP: It lets us state intent in plain language, specs, or examples. We can ask the model to invent code, tests, docs, diagrams—tasks that previously needed human translation from intention to syntax.

BUT SIDEWAYS: Generation is a probability distribution over tokens. Outputs vary with sampling temperature, seed, context length, and even with identical prompts.

felineflock··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
That time coincided with humanity living near the lowest standards of life.
felineflock··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
Ads are a brute force approach to the challenge of having useful information (company X offers Y) reach their target (people who needs Y presently or in the future).

If you say no ads should exist, then what alternatives would you have for that challenge?

felineflock··on Using Microsoft's New CLI Text Editor on Ubuntu
The tagline was below or at the end of the signature.

They were stored separately in a list and there was software that would pick one of them randomly to add to the signature when posting.

felineflock··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
There are 3 primary undesirability aspects of ads:

1) ads as irrelevant intrusions (in spite of all data Google collects, ads are mostly irrelevant for any person)

2) ads as ugly or blockers of beauty

3) ads as thieves of attention or downright theft (scam ads, illegal products)

Then, should we pay to get rid of ads or not? Two opposite opinions:

1) paying YouTube support creators

2) paying YouTube rewards the "shitification" of the platform

But even for those who pay there are issues: the content creator's own sponsorships, shorts, the risk of account banning by Google.

Then how about compensating creators directly? (Patreon or PayPal for example)

What I don't get is the questioning on the morality of ad blocking. No one should be obligated to watch an ad in one's own device, regardless of whatever "Terms of Service" (which is not a contract). It may be unfair to the content creator who relies on that revenue though.

felineflock··on Using Microsoft's New CLI Text Editor on Ubuntu
I appreciate the effort that went into writing the article but it conflates different concepts missing some historical context and technical distinctions.

For example, TUI (text user interface) and CLI (command-line interface) are quite different. "CLI Text Editor" sounds more like someone editing a file using ECHO commands.

This new editor is actually a reimplementation of the classic MS-DOS 5 EDIT program from 1991. At that time, VIM was still very new, so "VIM memes" weren't yet part of the tech landscape.

Before VIM, there was vi. In Usenet posts - about 15 years before Google - people used to add a pithy humorous sentence at the bottom called "tagline" - here is one: "How do you exit vi? Reboot the system."

And Notepad was not the only option for Windows devs. We've had EDIT, DR-DOS EDITOR, Brief, WordPad, EditPad, Notepad++, and more.
