febusravenga··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Exactly. I don't know how about "big design houses" like Apple, but in my small shop designers _only_ care about static screen stories. They don't care how user will click those icons, how focus will work, how any dynamic aspects of complex UI works.

In past it was "given" by desktop env, now it's all rebuilt in material or other design but without any advanced behavior, it only "looks good on static screen".

febusravenga··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
> Using this stuff well is a deep topic. These things can be applied in so many different ways, and to so many different projects. The best asset you can develop is an intuition

You're basically saying that using LLMs is like using magic. Telling people to use intuition is basically telling that i don't know how it works and why, but works for me sometimes.

That's why we programmers hate it - we have safe space where there's no intuition - namely programming languages & runtimes with deterministic behavior. And we're shoehorned back into mess of magic/intuition and wishfullthinking.

(yes, i try llm, i have some results, i'm frustrated mostly by people AI-slopping _everything_ around me)

febusravenga··on Repair a ship’s hull still in the river in -50˚C (2022)
Interesting observation and I have to relate - today I've measured ice thickness with classic stainless caliper - -3 celsius was enough for it to immediately glue to ice it was even barely wet.

Working such temperatures must be real hazard to skin, anything metal will glue to it immediately.

Well, I think that it depends on perspective and motivations.

Kissing asses/politics can be treated as skill used for different purposes. Imagine your ambition is to build bridge, skyscraper or fancy opera house.

To be chosen as the one for such projects, you must play many games including politics.

(I assume good intentions, selfish ones are possible too, but are they worth discussing?)

febusravenga··on Koralm Railway
> they just had shitty railroad

The terrain is just hard railroad had do huge detour on this section

Look at map: https://mapy.com/en/turisticka?x=15.0703419&y=46.7076432&z=1...

Passes in those mountains are only ~1200m above valley level (~1650 abs). Yeah, perfectly ok to run railroad there.

Your autobahn climbs 600m on this section (to 1050m absolute) - it's way to high for railway to be effective.

febusravenga··on RCE Vulnerability in React and Next.js
Half of web map solutions rely on workers, which can't be easily loaded from 3rd party origins, so are loaded as blobs. loading worker from blob is effectively an eval.

this, this, this

All our tokens should be in is protected keychain and there are no proper cross-platform solutions for this. All gclouds, was aww sdks, gh and other tools just store them in dotfile.

And worst thing, afaik there is no way do do it correctly in MacOS for example. I'd like to be corrected though.

febusravenga··on Problems with C++ exceptions
I think i agree with commenters that article kind-of uses exceptions wrong.

But this shows problems with C++ exceptions, C++ codebases are literred with bad exception usage because "normal" programmers don't get it. Most of didn't get it for long time. So, they are complex enough that their usage is risk.

Anyway, IMO C++ exceptions have two fundametal problems:

* lack of stacktrace, so actually lack of _debugabbility_, that's why people try/catch everything

* destructor problem (that actually there are exceptions tht cannot be propagated further and are lost

febusravenga··on Ask HN: How to deal with long vibe-coded PRs?
That's good. Because large refactorings are usually harmful. They are also usually unplanned, not scoped and based on very unquantifiable observations like "I don't like the code is structured" - let's do ity way.

febusravenga··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
Is there bigger harm to env than building parking lot? We've got plenty of these.

Why not building it under already wasted dead space like parking lot and have snow-free parking lot as extra bonus.

febusravenga··on Big agriculture mislead the public about the benefits of biofuels
But corn is _stored_ energy that can be used at any time. PV is energy ar the current moment. Seems like this 20x loss the cost of storage...

Interesting take though, I'm not saying that growing corn is best way to "produce stored energy", but in your comparison it's almost like direct competition to for PV + batteries of any sort.

febusravenga··on TIL: timeout in Bash scripts
This is my attempt to reinvent wheel from several years ago: https://github.com/zbigg/bashfoo/blob/master/timeout.sh

This is very complex, because if you.write lots of functions that call functions, you really just want to run something that inherits while env from your process, that's why there is control and sleep process and naive race to decide which finished first...

That's probably reason I ignored built-in timeout...

febusravenga··on Minimum Viable Blog
So every time you post snippets how of code from your template/blog engine, it will be replaced by current blog post title? /s
febusravenga··on Third party cookies must be removed
Yes, it is.

Just create _strict_ content security profile, which doesn't allow any external requests (fetch) and only allow load of resources (css, image, whatever) from predefined manifest.

App cannot exfiltrate any data in that case.

You may add permissions mechanisms of course (local disk, some cloud user controls, etc).

That's a big challenge in standards and not sure if anyone is working on such strongly restricted profile for web/js.

I explicitly refused project related to mobile location data crunching few years ago. I told it loudly to my manager then, I was already thinking I'm too arogant. But it was outlr market, it worked out we've found other project.

Now I would probably bend my neck and accept it. It's just not everyone has choice.

febusravenga··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I think main problem is that half of adult men population is actually into those noisy/auto-moto sports. Even if they don't own one, they like and admire this silently and believe it's harmless nuisance. Add to it few friends that already do it ... and they're cool...

I live in EU city center. Stupid noisy speeders are bane of my existence. Both noise and safety (for biker and pedestrian) ... In some circles even raising this topic makes you whining leftist crybaby.

febusravenga··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
It's easy. You can download data for certain areas you expect to be in offline mode and move all routing logic to app. It has been done many times in many apps. (ok, it only easy conceptually in reality it's quite big chunk of conscious dosign of app as a whole and no lesser chunk of actual work )
febusravenga··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
Times where SWEs decided about these things are long gone. It's all in hands of product managers, designers and other business oriented people.

All replies focus on "service" or cloud-in-general is needed to implement sync between devices.

Why we don't have "own" sync-my-files as-service that can be connected to many apps?

I would prefer this one (in all incarnations - desktop/mobile/watch) to be just apps, but connected to something like "folder in dropbox" or "folder in gdrive" ...

My cloud my choice. Their program my data (here or in my cloud).

I know that it doesn't work in todays economy when everyone expects free in exchange for some invonvenience like ads/data-scraping by vendor.

Random cross-language-script observation.

In Bulgarian, латиница ("latin alphabet") transliterated to latin alphabet is just "latinitsa" or "latinica".

In Polish "cyrillic" is "cyrylica" - basically reverse.
