fdye··on May sees biggest jobs increase ever
CNBC has some analysis on what jobs were created at : https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/05/record-job-gains-heres-where...

Looks like vast majority were in hospitality. Unfortunately, the warning sign is ~-500K in government sector. One of the major things that drew out the last recession was a significant decline in jobs for government employees month to month as tax revenue dried up.

While at this point any good news is welcome. The fact we are seeing an increase in hospitality, which typically are hourly with little/no benefits, for government jobs, which typically are more professional with good benefits, should be worrying. My non-expert analysis thinks it means the COVID-19 recession is becoming more systemic.

Honestly, the price increase on both platforms recently has pushed my household (Wife + Me) back to Muni/Driving. Previously, if one of us used ride sharing it was ~$5-8 each way. Now for the same ride we regularly hit $12-20. It was so bad the last week of my wife using them that she paid ~$18-20 each way, when I reminder her that that was $200 for the week just to get to work, she was shocked. At 4 weeks in the month thats a decent Mercedes payment, getting close to insurance+gas locally. Now we only use it for the occasional night out where we just factor in the expense as entertainment. These services only have a marginal value that is approximately 2-3x public transit. In SF that is Muni at $2.50-$3, so $5-9 one way. Once you cross the $10 and creep into $15-20, you have a problem and the business crashes and burns. In my twenties I remember working at a bar near chinatown. I would get off and my feet would be killing me. It was only maybe 6-8 blocks up Sutter to get to my old place, but every once in a while I would waste money on a Taxi. I remember it killing me that they started the meter at $3.50 and it would end like $8-10. Always felt like if they just flat rated it at $5 for my 6-8 blocks, I would take it everyday to and from (Uber sort of did just that and I rode it like crazy for a while), but at $10 it was a special treat and the rest of the time I schlepped up Sutter, feet be damned.
fdye··on San Francisco school board votes to destroy murals by Victor Arnautoff
So here is an idea, why don't they ask the SFMOMA experts if there is any way to remove the entire wall and donate it to their collection? I have seen Banksy pieces where they cutout the entire external wall an office building and displayed it in an art gallery for sale (granted not this large). Seems like a win win, the school district gets the mural down and a new wall to paint however they like. SF MOMA gets a critical piece in their collection and I'm sure all the controversy will spike its total worth. Granted cost would probably be substantially more, but perhaps the SF MOMA can help with that since they have a large endowment and would be receiving the piece.

Honestly, my wife got me into the SoulCycle style spin classes before our wedding a few years ago. I dug the workout, music, joint activity, group class a lot, but it gets really expensive. Typical class is $32 a piece. With my doctor wanting me to get at least 4, >45 min workouts a week, this added up really quickly. However, after 6 months of consistently going before the wedding I can say I have never had a better doctors visit, essentially "Keep up what your doing" Peloton allowed me to purchase the bike (yes it's in my apartment living room, facing a window) for essentially 2-3 classes a month (around $100). Its a bit easier to wakeup, cycle, shower, head to work during the week. Then my wife and myself still splurge on a group class during the weekend as a shared activity. Bonus points: The Peloton also casts to our SmartTV for Core/Yoga classes. We don't use it as much, but its pretty cool.

It amuses me to think we have moved from the printed word back to hieroglyphs (emoji). Not in a derogatory way, communication is communication, but in a awe of older cultures. I like the thought experiment of imagining a fallen advanced civilization in Egypt. I imagine them stuck... watching their batteries drop to 0%, and turning to stone and emoji as the only way to persist communication.

What if printed words were really just a transitional state of language until their purest form, emoji!
