fche··on World hunger not going down and obesity still growing – UN report
where there is hunger, birth rates are too high

where there is obesity, birth rates are too low

fche··on The High Cost of Low-level Crime in San Francisco
That is a big "if", of course. And I thought the initial idea was to have the gov't pay the losses of the victims of thefts, without incarcerating the thieves. As though that would eliminate the victimization.
fche··on The High Cost of Low-level Crime in San Francisco
A daily theft of $84 per day has much more than $84/day of cost in terms of corrosion of social trust. A government payout cannot fix that - heck it makes it worse.
fche··on The High Cost of Low-level Crime in San Francisco
How would you support the proposition that San Francisco is not failing, or is even flourishing?
fche··on Palantir’s software was used for deportations, documents show
> nobody on the left is seriously talking about having open borders.

This is a blatant lie.

fche··on Fossil vs Git
The comparison lacks a big item: distributed-ness: the whole git-remote push & pull symmetry. It allows not only offline bare-minimum operation, but full offline development, then later online merging. I don't see any signs that fossil can do the same.

The comparison re. licenses is factually mistaken in several ways, but that's probably not worth a great deal of discussion - it's too religious a topic.

fche··on MongoDB Now Released Under the Server Side Public License – MongoDB
> it absolutely does not apply any restrictions to using the licensed software. What it does is codify the responsibilities of someone who runs the software as a service.

Potato / potatoe. The imposition of that responsibility is a restriction.

fche··on MongoDB Now Released Under the Server Side Public License
The AGPL needs some competent defenders.

fche··on [dead]
The actual report is here: https://www.acrecampaigns.org/s/Delivering-Hate-Jul-2018.pdf

Pages #21/30 onward contain evidence of the horror. Confederate flags. Nooses. Skeletons. LEGO. PEPE. Pepe Trump! (Why not a LEGO Pepe Trump?)

It is to weep.

fche··on Sympathy for the Incel
Thinking of men solely as a source of sperm is as goofy as thinking of women as only wombs.
fche··on Ask HN: What's a good static site generator to use for a blog in 2018?

fche··on Dtrace for Linux
> and in the early days people were scared off with its kernel panics.

It is ironic that to this day those kernel panics are associated with systemtap (the visible user interface) rather than the kernel (where the vast majority of the responsible bugs actually lay). But perceptions indeed matter, even erroneous ones.

fche··on Dtrace for Linux
Note for freshness that systemtap can also emit eBPF directly now. So kernel modules are the fastest & most powerful way, but not the only one.
fche··on Google's Anti-Bullying AI Mistakes Civility for Decency
The more the better. But think of the incentives this vague "definition" creates. By labelling your opponents "toxic" (claiming that their rude etc. stuff is making you want to leave), you can get them censored. It is rewarding thin-skinnedness with power. This does not end well.
fche··on Google's Anti-Bullying AI Mistakes Civility for Decency
> Toxic is defined as [...]

subjective, unquestionable nonsense

fche··on Google's Anti-Bullying AI Mistakes Civility for Decency
... complete with lingo ("toxic") that is vague enough that it cannot be defined or disputed. Convenient!
fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
It sounds like they kept meetings deliberately off-the-record, but then again here on https://www.google.com/diversity/index.html there's stuff like "we’re committed to making our workforce more reflective of the world we live in". Number goals are unlikely to be published for obvious liability reasons.
fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
I believe the memo + followups included claims that the hiring process is not the same either.
fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
Proof for what? Smaller number of available women? That's obvious. That if larger companies hire the best of them, the remaining supply/quality will shrink? That's obvious too.
fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
And then watch out if your company bases its diversity targets on numbers from the rest of the industry. All the good ones may be taken (in order to get to the mythical 50%), but now we want to follow suit (to get to 50%), but what's left? What a mess.
fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
If you search harder for them, the bar is lowered by virtue of letting them be less outstanding / noticeable.

fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo

fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
"If waterboarding is not torture then why would you apply it ..."

This applies to any sort of interrogation tactic along the spectrum between The Comfy Chair and Execution. Each step would not be applied if the detainees confessed at the next-below step.

fche··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
If female engineers need to worry that, in the aftermath of the memo, people will wonder their genuine qualifications, they should not aim their blame toward the memo. The only people overtly and explicitly injecting non-qualification factors into hiring are affirmative-action type people. They created the quandary.

fche··on Why I Was Fired by Google
> "There is absolutely no evidence that there is a biological imperative that prevents women from being as effective as men at software development."

straw man when applied to individuals

begging the question when applied to groups

twofer

fche··on Why I Was Fired by Google
> "honest discussion is being silenced"

I'm pretty sure that being fired - having pitchfork crowds go after you and people who agree - is close enough to being silenced.

fche··on Why I Was Fired by Google
> That is not true, here is the best point-by-point analysis

But that is pretty crappy analysis, throwing your conclusion into doubt.

> it's not you, it's biology!

What if that is literally true somewhere in the causal chain? Is it good to put managers into terror at having to justify hiring Top Men?
