fbn79··on Akira ransomware can be cracked with sixteen RTX 4090 GPUs in around ten hours
So... what is the estimated cost to find the key using AWS H100 or similar service?
fbn79··on Gemini Robotics brings AI into the physical world
I suspect that if a nuclear war brings humans to extinction tomorrow, this project could be looked at by hypothetical aliens, visiting our planet in the future, as the "Antikythera mechanism" of our times. (well.... if we can trust the video)
fbn79··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
If I understand correctly, the definition of "largest trading partner" in the graphic is misleading because it is based exclusively on physical goods. But the US exports to many countries an impressive amount of digital services (Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple). If we take into account the value of these services I think that many parts of the map would return to blue.
fbn79··on An Infinitely Large Napkin [pdf] (2019)
How many of you upvote this pretenting to find some day the time and spirit to read and learn from it, but perfectly knowing that will never happen. I'm one of them unfortunally, gosh!
fbn79··on EU to mobilize 200B Euros to invest in AI
Of this, €20bn will be earmarked for AI gigafactories. This reminds me of Northvolts. https://www.bruegel.org/analysis/northvolts-struggles-cautio...
fbn79··on How to Run DeepSeek R1 671B Locally on a $2000 EPYC Server
It's all in the model. If you look for a good definition of "intellingence" that is compression. You can see ZIP algorithm as a primordial antenate of Chatgpt :))
fbn79··on Koa – Next generation web framework for Node.js
Same like you. I like it because is less a framework, and more like a library. Light alternative compared to Express. You can use it as base and choose the library you prefer for other functionality (routing,body-parsing,... )
fbn79··on Nvidia releases its own brand of world models
Doing so would mean incentivizing customers to seek alternative routes and migrate to competitor. Thus with the risk of losing the current moat.
fbn79··on Haskell vs. Ada vs. C++ vs. an Experiment in Prototyping Productivity (1994) [pdf]
It's not Haskell, but you can write great functional programming code with Javascript. I think it is very ergonomic for FP. Remember that Javascript is the world's most misunderstood programming language =))
fbn79··on AI company that made robots for children went bust and now the robots are dying
Most likely the source code alone is not enough, probably the system works with third party paid cloud services or third party components that could not be licensed.
fbn79··on Writing Composable SQL Using Knex and Pipelines
I like knex, but would love it more if all methods does not mutates the original data structure. A pure version of knex would be great
fbn79··on 1B nested loop iterations
Would be nice to know max RAM usage by each implementation.
fbn79··on PHP 8.4
Node: - easy to deploy: If you dont complicate yourself, with cpanel or plesk hosting is just matter of copy the files. - Terabytes of npm packages (even too much :)) - A non bloated and nice language (JavaScript) - Optional type checking with typescript if you want. - Non blocking IO
fbn79··on Electrobun: Cross-platform desktop applications written in TypeScript
I'm quite sure is talking about "low size update packages"
fbn79··on The tragedy of running an old Node project
Maybe you are fortunate or I'm not because in projects I have experienced missing o changed maven repository urls and changed deps packages names or url. And was an hell to fix.
fbn79··on The tragedy of running an old Node project
In my experience this only happen if the project does not have a lock file and does not specify a node version (two good practice that must be followed).
fbn79··on The tragedy of running an old Node project
I would love the author to test and old java/maven project. Node is a paradise compared to that stack.
fbn79··on Grab built its own map in Southeast Asia, and is now going after Google
It depends. Let's suppose we want to search info about the bio of historic people, for example Julius Caesar. Google will return for sure the link to english wikipedia. But let's assume that Italian Wikipedia got more deep info about Caesar. Would you prefer to see a less complete English version, or get the most complete Italian version (and auto-translate it in English with any available tools to read it)?
fbn79··on Grab built its own map in Southeast Asia, and is now going after Google
Yes, was about this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42114990 . I don't know we ended up here! sorry!
fbn79··on Grab built its own map in Southeast Asia, and is now going after Google
A use of LLMs by search engines that I would like to see applied:

# At indexing time - The search engine use LLM to convert all the page content into a "common language" (English?!) before indexing.

- Use LLM to rank the page (detect page spammy/informational level)

# At query time - My query is translated to the "common language" - Result list most appropriate results unbiased by page language, but only by spammy/informational value.

fbn79··on Smarter Than 'Ctrl+F': Linking Directly to Web Page Content
In Google Chrome select text, right click and click "copy link to highlight". It create a link with ~:text=
fbn79··on Shanghai Before the Foreigners
Can I suggest you the novel "Maiden Voyage" by Denton Welch. Is a portrait of Shanghai in 1930 by an english boy
fbn79··on I Hate the Letter F
I think the "F" is OP Zahir https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zahir
fbn79··on Rust needs a web framework
It is always a good idea to write a library, not so for frameworks https://www.brandons.me/blog/libraries-not-frameworks
fbn79··on The bunkbed conjecture is false
and funny 7523 is a prime number.
fbn79··on Piracy
Owning is overvalued. The things you own end up owning you.
fbn79··on Rawdrawandroid – Build Android apps without any Java, in C and Make
If works with C why not Rust
fbn79··on Show HN: JAQT – JavaScript Queries and Transformations
For the same purpouse I ofter use this https://github.com/calmm-js/partial.lenses
fbn79··on Why Haskell?
The GC could be very smart and optimized, but at the end... "Any sufficiently complicated program in a garbage-collected language contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of malloc and free". https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22802451
fbn79··on Why Haskell?
Haskell have a garbage collector (and it have a lot or work to do). So even if you are in the context of immutability, if you don't want a gc, you still need to take care of memory yourself using RAII like Rust or any other low level technique. About syntax for me haskell is beautiful. But maybe it's just my love for having type notation aside from function declaration and not mixed.
