fatsdomino001··on Toronto swaps Google-backed, not-so-smart city plans for people-centred vision
Don't worry, conservatives will get in and fire-sale our natural resources to try and pay off the debt. It's like a horrifying good cop bad cop.
fatsdomino001··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
> That core may get more extreme in its echo chamber, but its overall movement could end up being smaller and weaker.

This is precisely the problem. That core will certainly get more extreme because there's no cross pollination between it and other more moderate groups.

I would rather have more people with less extreme views than fewer people with more extreme views, because it's much more likely the more extreme people are a greater danger to society than the less extreme people.

> Extremism is not a problem of lack of information.

True, but it's more complicated than that. Extremism almost always results when you disenfranchise or ostracize a community. It's much better to integrate it so there's crossflow of information and empathy still. Dehumanizing groups of people also dehumanizes yourself.

fatsdomino001··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
"you can help the redeemable extremists __know__ they're indulging in extremism by forcing them to go to fringe websites rather than allow them to stay on Twitter and Facebook as if nothing is wrong."

This is such a terrible idea. All this accomplishes is causing extremists to find echo chambers where they will never actually know what they're doing is wrong. It's much better to keep extremists in mainstream platforms so they can be called out and atleast informed that they are wrong. Your solution is totally backwards and accomplishes the opposite of what you're hoping for.

I wonder how the inclusion of graph features in Postgres 14 will affect this project.
fatsdomino001··on Trust: The Need for Public Understanding of How Science Works
The answer actually isn't no in this case, because the question was whether any natural phenomemon may also be CONTRIBUTING to CO2 levels, which of course there are countless natural contributors to CO2 levels. So, just be careful because you just fell into the same trap the professor did.
fatsdomino001··on The gently competitive world of giant vegetable growing
The advice that Fortey gave Snoop at the time was to use mycorrhizal fungi. That’s not in this article, but they did a video at that time showing the meeting.

If anyone has any questions on mycorrhizal fungi, ask away. It’s really an underappreciated part of our ecosystem and should probably factor into any solution to climate change as they’re also largely responsible for sequestering carbon into the soil.

fatsdomino001··on An Interview with Sci-Hub’s Alexandra Elbakyan on the Delhi HC Case
All publicly funded research is most certainly not free, that’s a big part of the problem.
fatsdomino001··on Facebook to restore news in Australia after last-minute deal with government
not yet, but you'd be a fool if you thought it's only going to target Google and Facebook.
fatsdomino001··on Facebook to restore news in Australia after last-minute deal with government
no they are forcing all websites to pay. There's just a delay between the 2 they've targeted currently and the millions yet to be targeted.
fatsdomino001··on Ultima VIII – How to destroy a gaming franchise in one easy step
It was a incredible world to discover and explore (especially custom servers with custom maps and content). There was no 'point' to the game, i.e. no final destination or quest to complete... in fact there were barely any quests at all. It was all just up to you. However you wanted to play you could. I.e. you could just have a blast logging in and hanging out in a player's house which they converted into a bar and play chess chatting about w/e. I even played some great roleplaying shards which were legit, e.g. a LOTR one and it was soo epicly awesome. Good pvp dynamics. I did love the ruthlessness of losing everything when you died. I loved how custom shards could tweak so many of the variables pretty easily. I just have so many absolutely golden memories, hilarious and absurd memories. Idk... it's just really hard to convey how the game was the best. I think a lot of is just because it let you do whatever you wanted, but also provided you with fun PvE, PvP, roleplaying, etc.

What are games today missing? They're not persistent open-world sandbox games. Sure we have open-world games, but they're not sandbox and often not persistent, and we have sandbox but they're not open-world and often not persistent too.

I can't do it. I can't adequately describe what games today are missing which UO had. It's a quality of the combination of all the features UO had that just resulted in the best memories and fun I've had when gaming. I just don't see enough support for player-generated content as UO had, which I suspect is a big part of it too.

fatsdomino001··on Ultima VIII – How to destroy a gaming franchise in one easy step
Ultima Online is the best gaming experience I ever had. In my opinion, nothing has come close to it in regards to game dynamics, was a proper open-world sandbox.

As I never found anything close to Ultima Online, I basically stopped gaming entirely. UO raised the bar too high.

fatsdomino001··on Show HN: A search engine for the Django Ecosystem (docs, news, packages, etc.)
Awesome, great resource to come back to. Good job putting it all together.

What sort of infrastructure is it running on? I imagine django of course. Postgres too? Or are you using something like ELasticsearch or Solr?

fatsdomino001··on Tim Berners-Lee says Australian media pay law would make internet unworkable
If those news sources were going to be fine, why are they so desperate to prop up their failing business model by shaking down competition?
fatsdomino001··on Tim Berners-Lee says Australian media pay law would make internet unworkable
Yeah Hacker News would likely have to shut down if targeted by bills like these.
fatsdomino001··on Tim Berners-Lee says Australian media pay law would make internet unworkable
The problem isn't so much the financial cost to link aggregators, it's the regulatory burden. All this bill does is entrench the existing biggest companies in the space and prevent competition, because smaller entrants will be unable to e.g. negotiate contracts with all media providers.

This is just legacy media using their quasi monopoly and regulatory capture to squash competition.

fatsdomino001··on Global debt soars to 356% of GDP
I agree we are dealing with problems better than in the 20th century... but we're on the precipice of a massive economic depression, actually probably already in the throes of it. Unfortunately the fed has bastardized the cost of money and so people are getting cheap loans despite the outsized risk that it'll simply never be paid back.

We're in for interesting times that's for sure.

fatsdomino001··on Global debt soars to 356% of GDP
Does society look stable and secure to you right now?
fatsdomino001··on Minimally Invasive (and More Accurate) Analytics: GoAccess and Athena/SQL
Looks very interesting.

Yeah I mean, I'm just running a django site, so I imagine I could add a custom middleware that makes an API request on every page load. I guess it would have to try and see if the access token is expired first? and if so grab a new one then make the hit. Is that the recommended setup?

Would I be able to pass extra information to be included in the logs, like e.g. username?

Also, I know you have good privacy policies, but still sending this information through a request makes me nervous nevertheless, even though it's of course miles better than js-based solutions. But what are your thoughts on how possible is it for these requests to be intercepted and this logged data siphoned off by someone else?

fatsdomino001··on Journalism, particularly at the highest level, is about raw power
Sure, no problem. I didn't mean it as a personal attack, just helping the other poster out by bringing it to their attention.

In regards to the other unsubstantive comments, is it possible to know which ones you are referring to? I do add some comments which are short, is that what you are referring to? I know I should write longer comments to substantiate them.

fatsdomino001··on Journalism, particularly at the highest level, is about raw power
I can't help but feel this article is saying the quiet part out loud.
fatsdomino001··on Why “Trusting the Science” Is Complicated
It's better to use different language, like saying how we're exceedingly confident that the earth is round, rather than it being an absolute. Sort of like our confidence asymptotically approaches absolute but never actually reaches it.

This is similar to Hume's argument for our belief that the sun will rise tomorrow. Obviously, we all believe (even flat-earthers) that the sun will rise tomorrow and we have much science to indicate this will continue to be the case for a long time. Still, that doesn't mean we can be 100% confident this is the case. It's frankly just exceedingly difficult to be 100% absolutely sure about anything, unless it's first order mathematics.

fatsdomino001··on These 15 Billionaires Own America's News Media Companies (2016)
That America and other countries have allowed the consolidation of media companies to such a degree is a large part of the reason why we're having so many problems today.
fatsdomino001··on The Making of Facebook’s Supreme Court
It's astonishing to me that people are actually calling for censoring all social media... like honestly, do you not see any of the good that social media does? E.g. Youtube democratized people's voices.

Social media is a great equilizer and great contributor to the democratization of society writ large.
