fatfingerd··on Java 21 makes me like Java again
Yes, I'm also not really sure I want to see algebraic types in Java even though I would prefer if a language that focused on algebraic types was more popular.

All the existing Java code doesn't go away, so is it really going to be nicer to have code like this mixed randomly into that?

fatfingerd··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
Ah yes, 88% carbs, 0.8% sugars (simple carbs).
fatfingerd··on How the fentanyl crisis' fourth wave has hit every corner of the US
> Sweden has the highest number of deaths per capita

In Europe? It looks like the US has almost 3X as many. The US' map of deaths looks dominated by economics, while the European one looks like it follows the latitude with seasonal depression.

fatfingerd··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
The problem here is Kelloggs is a brand from the era in which western nutritional diseases exploded and it's products reflect that. Corn flakes without added sugar are made by others and are like 3% carbs.
fatfingerd··on Layoffs.fyi
It's also very hard to figure out which companies expect a 15% discount compared to the same role a year or more ago.. This makes a market that is too annoying for the already employed that want to move laterally with no losses or upward with actual benefit.

Possibly that's a short time help to the unemployed, but it is a factor that could successfully lower the going wage.

The downtick in layoffs is perhaps that many experienced tech workers even if jobless can apply at much lower rates or just sit it out so its hard for management to understand which positions will cost them a pound of flesh to fill again even as they stare at the holes they already have.

fatfingerd··on Libsodium: A modern, portable, easy to use crypto library
When I first learned of NaCL/libsodium I was very interested in a new API but.. It seems to me like if you go with anything along these lines you have very little chance of ever supporting hardware protected keys (smartcards, hsms, etc) and, quite frankly, I'm not sure any data should be stored on a normal computer or mobile phone that you wouldn't publish in a blog, so having a software key is madness, IMO.
fatfingerd··on Google says it can’t fix Pixel Watches, please just buy a new one
They can't claim an end of life date that's after the end of that SoC firmware contract if the SoC could have an issue that requires a fix. Plenty of hardware vendors ship updates for serious issues when they can after their published EoL date for good will reasons, but the EoL date is largely self fulfilling as corporate customers replace anything EoL to avoid risk.
fatfingerd··on Carrefour puts ‘shrinkflation’ price warnings on food to shame brands
Reputation. When you see a different size for the first time at big chains they sometimes are not a change to the manufacturers normal lines.

(If you have much faster turn over than other places your customer's shop that could also reinforce the perception that you are complicit.)

fatfingerd··on Nigeria hit by widespread blackout in 'total system collapse'
Without batteries you are charging your cellphones and maybe not running the generators as much to cool food, which may make up for some of the fuel subsidies.
fatfingerd··on Nigeria hit by widespread blackout in 'total system collapse'
I think total system collapse is used synonymously with a total societal collapse, which could stem from a single infrastructure system collapsing. Quite a thing to happen in a single day.
fatfingerd··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
If these software updates are embargoed to some countries then your discovery is a tool of cyberwar under a fig leaf.
fatfingerd··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
That makes no sense. A whole bunch of Americans won't do anything in this area because the US legal system is whimsical. But some nationalist professor was going to agree to make StuxNet, and maybe they were right, we certainly aren't going to all get to reach them to debate. So what is achieved?

Would Apple being totally incompetent at security and fighting exploits from NK prison labor, eventually with about the same fail rate, be a better world?

Export control on thoughts didn't work, so total disarmament on thoughts won't work. Prioritize security, cut out some of the entertainment and useless features through regulation because brain candy always wins in an unregulated market.

fatfingerd··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
The US carefully developed its cyber security plan during the word press macro era. Let's send the FBI to foreign countries in the hopes of arresting teenagers who learned how to cut and paste, genius.

Unfortunately, it forgets how to do this if the country is Israel instead of the Philippines.

Is there some solution in that to making sure 100% of possible red team members are more aligned with the profit interests of the US' strategic private companies than the US strategic partners in running illegal conspiracies?

I'm baffled as to what utopia of a profession has global tool collaboration and consequences, but somehow manages to deal with 230 groups of nationalists, thousands of sects, and embargo's on any one group paying people across all of these to provide a regulatory framework for safe and human benefiting tools in their category with no edge cases. If such a regulatory framework existed maybe it would shut down these mobile phone companies over behavioral harm?

fatfingerd··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
When significant functionality and backwards compatibility is required and money is limited, I'll happily work for red team, when brick is a valid solution, I will happily work for blue team.
fatfingerd··on CIA bribed its own team to reject lab-leak theory, whistleblower claims
According to the Yakov Smirnoff principle, whistle blower is one of the best professions in Russia.
fatfingerd··on Ask HN: Getting excited about new Apple iPhones is so 2010s. What went wrong?
In the early days of 2 year contracts and half year batteries there was no out of sync, and that's a very different environment to release a product into. Even someone who still buys the best for themselves and hands their phones down is probably sitting the average year out.
fatfingerd··on Zadie Smith, Stephen King and Rachel Cusk’s pirated works used to train AI
The 2 claims I heard from Sarah Silverman are that a specific AI was documented to be trained from a specific library of pirated content and that it gave verbatim or near verbatim output from her book. Piracy and plagiarism for non corporate humans.
fatfingerd··on Someone pays $500k fee to send $1,865
I'd think an insider could keep a transaction hanging at any given time in many accounts payable situations, but taking all that risk to share a tiny portion of a pool would be pretty silly..
fatfingerd··on Intercom is a terrible Mailchimp. So is Mailchimp
Mailchimp did have a secret key per org specifically to calculate a email address hash id that was unique.. This hash is enough to prevent resubscription when other feeds are brought in. That could at least prevent new employees from seeing my email long after I requested privacy.
fatfingerd··on Someone pays $500k fee to send $1,865
Is it possible this was a form of laundering or insider theft? I.e. could the intended transaction not have actually been broadcast to all miners?
fatfingerd··on Chronic fatigue syndrome may have a post-viral infection origin
There's no telling what's real once you are willing to go down that route, least of all a doctors opinion. If someone stops displaying symptoms that could just be a non blinded doctor and a placebo.

I think the offense is going there without any double blinded science and then relying on non reproducible fields of research to annoy the patient.

fatfingerd··on Chronic fatigue syndrome may have a post-viral infection origin
Sure but if you look at male outcomes, we are clearly ignoring a lot of real health problems that are deadly, so 66% of males ignoring a less than deadly problem that allows 8 hours of work a day seems more likely than a lot of female hypochondriacs to me.
fatfingerd··on Zadie Smith, Stephen King and Rachel Cusk’s pirated works used to train AI
The claim is that libraries extensive enough to contain these copyrighted works are pirated and since that doesn't put them in the public domain, I don't understand your comment.
fatfingerd··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
You mean if you are in the Secret Service?
fatfingerd··on Chronic fatigue syndrome may have a post-viral infection origin
To me this seems suspiciously like confusing heightened awareness of a problem, or inability to treat it early, with cause.

People who seem likely to be diagnosed seem less likely to happily sleep for 12 hours a day for a few weeks after a viral infection, more likely to blame themselves for their state and more stressed by awareness that something is wrong.

Naturally, if a rich layabout has the problem anyway, then we can look to their childhood and find at least one trauma.

fatfingerd··on Scammers can exploit email forwarding flaws to impersonate high-profile domains
There's nothing inconsistent with that. Spear fishing techniques that rely on a number of bad practices, where thousands of people know what's wrong, survive as long as high volume spam is largely frustrated by post fact remediation, i.e. forcing some domain to disable open forwarding or suspending some account on too much of it.
fatfingerd··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
The US government gives them billions of dollars and they help the US government maintain puppet dictatorships like Saudi Arabia..
fatfingerd··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
I liked that Google lets you register a different handler for SMS which is at least part way to letting us shut off that 0-click crap channel.
fatfingerd··on TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption is coming to Ubuntu
What's the status for ZFS with a TPM and his will this affect it (competitively?)
fatfingerd··on God writes Haskell
But Quantum entanglement seems to be traveling in God's channel, how does that happen if God is using linked lists?
