farseer··on Ask HN: If OpenAI stops its free Web service (ChatGPT)
Their competitor is Google, which has already baked AI into search and allows you to talk to Gemini separately as well. Google already makes a hundred billion a year from text search and won't stop a free Gemini which adds value to their search. What makes you say that?

Also Deepseek and Alibaba would love to capture OpenAI users.

farseer··on Ask HN: If Everyone Can "Build" a SaaS, What Becomes Valuable?
Large software platforms with their own ecosystems will be spared this fate. Mostly because AI can only create small and trivial apps and further model improvement in context size or otherwise may not be forthcoming so easily.

So large software platforms, think Jira/Confluence, MS Teams, SAP etc are not affected. But AI will definitely eat the solo dev SaaS, especially those handling trivial use cases.

farseer··on Ask HN: What are the most significant man-made creations to date?
Mine are energy related:

1. The Steam engine and later ICE engines that started and sustained the industrial revolution and the modern world.

2. Electricity (generation, control), this led to the telegraph (our first internet), radio, and of-course electrical switching components that form basis of modern semiconductors.

farseer··on Conditions in the Intel 8087 floating-point chip's microcode
Is there 8087 IP available in verilog etc?
farseer··on Ask HN: Salesforce, SAP, or ServiceNow: Which Is Most Ripe for Disruption?
SAP has some competitors for its smaller offerings. Odoo, OpenProject etc. But to replace a full scale SAP for an MNC with worldwide logistics and billions in sales, you will need well another SAP.
farseer··on Tell HN: Intel could blow up the Console Wars if it had the guts
You are asking Intel to become Apple, sort of. Without control over any of the software that runs on their processors.
farseer··on Tell HN: Intel could blow up the Console Wars if it had the guts
Yes this would drive away their customers to AMD. I am thinking Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer would not take it very well.
farseer··on Iran has now been offline for 96 hours
You are partially right, Israel does want to subdue the middle east and Iran stands in the way. However that does not absolve the current Iranian government of being a despicable entity, mostly hated by its own people. I hope the Iranian people choose democracy, limit the Ayatollahs to their holy city in Qom like the Vatican, tell that rascal Shah's son to go fornicate himself and of-course continue putting a necessary check on Israeli expansionism.
farseer··on Ask HN: Any Microsoft employees/devs here? What's happening to Microsoft?
>>since salary is barely competitive even if you are a top performer getting special stock awards

People sitting outside FANG/NAMAMA still drool over those barely competitive salaries you speak of.

farseer··on Ask HN: How do you use 5–10 minute gaps productively?
I have seen my uncle do it. He is a corporate finance consultant. He simply opens his laptop or phone and starts working on random things, replying to e-mails, making presentations, scheduling appointments, creating/closing tasks on client PM/ERP software. Sometimes for as little as 3 minutes.

As a developer, for the longest time I thought why tf can't I be as productive! Then I realized the rev up time for my line of work is not like his. By the time my brain switches context to work on code, those 5 minutes are up.

farseer··on Ask HN: Does reading HN make you happy?
Overall IQ of the crowd also helps.
farseer··on Ask HN: Is Stack Overflow Dead?
This! I still come back to SO, but only after exhausting all AI proposed solutions across multiple models.
farseer··on Venezuela explained in 10 maps and charts
Sanctions against someone they need to contain Russia?
farseer··on Venezuela explained in 10 maps and charts
The EU is fine with it, because there are no principles in geo-politics. All their hue and cry about Ukraine is also because of their own security, not any virtue. Laughably it was the EU that went along with US plans to deorbit Ukraine from Russia's influence.

The only way for Venezuela to survive is to play dirty and be cunning/resourceful just like their Ukrainian counterparts fighting for their life.

farseer··on Show HN: I built middleware to connect legacy SOAP APIs to AI agents in 2 weeks
I like your flexible pricing structure, that is refreshing. Just the other day I wanted to try out a SaaS and the minimum signup was for 12 months.
farseer··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
They still go to TSMC for fab, and so does everyone else.
farseer··on Ask HN: What open source projects are you grateful for?
Linux, VS Code, Electron, Ghidra, Sqlite
farseer··on Ask HN: Is America in Recession?
GDP is growing so its not a recession by the traditional definition. But the number of well paying jobs is not increasing overall. You can still become a bartender or a contract/gig worker, those are still in demand.
farseer··on Why doesn't someone just send the Epstein files to WikiLeaks?
1. Only a small subset of people have access to them.

2. The hype around the files means they are secure/well guarded. Such kind of act is expected unlike lets say the Snowden files.

3. Retribution would be swift, even if you don't believe in Epstein killing himself.

4. The adversary list may involve a certain beloved foreign government. If Epstein was an intelligence asset as alleged. This increases the risk further for the leaker dying an unnatural death.

farseer··on Ask HN: Where to Migrate as an IT Support/DevOps Engineer for Work?
>>Because nothing is going to happen irrespective of my abilities.

If you have spare time, have you tried upgrading your skills? IT Support is not exactly high paying to begin with.

farseer··on USA gives South Korea green light to build nuclear submarines
South Korea is capable enough to build nuclear submarines even if the US had denied them the said facilities. This saves them money, not having to modify their shipyards.
farseer··on Ask HN: Effective way to deal with mosquitoes?
The fan has to be very fast for this to work, otherwise the little buggers find pockets and crevasses around you to shelter from the air and then eventually bite.
farseer··on Over $70T of inherited wealth over next decade will widen inequality, economists
That is the way of the world, capitalism specifically. The only way to counter is a fair tax system and good spending on education up to college level.
farseer··on When stick figures fought
The woke crowd of today would have gotten stickdeath.com banned from the internet were it made today :)
farseer··on Ask HN: Is AWS down again?
I would think that data centers scale up horizontally and a failure of one node should only affect a limited number of customers. Barring any centralized DNS mess up of-course.
farseer··on Using jet engines for power generation at AI centers.
You can also build data centers in far off places, near dams or wind corridors. We are not at the level of desperation to start nuclear programs underground.
farseer··on Ask HN: Last time you needed a web analytics answer (real steps, not opinions)
The GA4 transition was a one time thing, the rest I can live with for now. Not enough friction for me to want to switch. Especially since I know, a search engine is unlikely to depreciate a product like Analytics anytime soon.
farseer··on Ask HN: What are people doing to get off of VMware?
I think the following quote summarizes Broadcom's strategy with regards to VMWare:

"If you are a Global 2000 company, VMware wants your business — from the rest, not so much,”

farseer··on DeepSeek OCR
How good is this compared to most commercial OCR software?
farseer··on Ask HN: How are senior SWEs using AI?
Its great to get back into programming when you have become rusty because of managerial duties.
