farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What is a lightweight web framework?
Given legacy devices, I'm not sure that vanilla JS is the best way to go, despite being a lightweight option.

Sometimes I think if you're dealing with an old browser(s), pick a technology of its time--in this case, perhaps jQuery (lightweight and ubiquitous).

It's like a time machine, where the old browser can say: "Oh god, thank you. Finally someone I can understand. Why do these kids keep asking me for promises? Promise what?!"

farnsworthy··on Launch HN: Shogun (YC W18) – Storefront Builder for ECommerce Sites
I agree in general, but that's not the case with these guys. Pick your platform--first UI interaction--and the prices are right there.
farnsworthy··on Crazy things happening in SF because of its out-of-control housing prices
What is the average 1BR apartment going for now in SF? (I'm not sure that Craiglist or quoted outliers are entirely representative, and am interested in the experiences of people more familiar with the market.)

> This is how people outside the area imagine living in San Francisco.

She doesn't seem to think much of her readers.

> San Francisco's chief housing inspector deemed living in boxes illegal.

farnsworthy··on History of the browser user-agent string (2008)
I like "sending shitty text files" as our (collective) job description.
farnsworthy··on MacPaint and QuickDraw Source Code (2010)
“It’s an art form, like any other art form… I would spend time rewriting whole sections of code to make them more cleanly organized, more clear. I’m a firm believer that the best way to prevent bugs is to make it so that you can read through the code and understand exactly what it’s doing… And maybe that was a little bit counter to what I ran into when I first came to Apple… If you want to get it smooth, you’ve got to rewrite it from scratch at least five times.”
farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What stack would you use to build a CRUD web app in 2018?
Do you even Docker?
farnsworthy··on We Dare You to Explain Luke’s Plan to Rescue Han in ‘Return of the Jedi’
It was like the idea behind a lot of startups: "We're gonna bring a lot of really talented people together in the same space to collaborate, and just see what happens."

In another galaxy far, far away, the palace ended up as .jabba, a trendy coworking cafe. You had Boba Fett hacking away in the corner on his space-food delivery startup (bounty hunting's the day job), jawas on their ridesharing service (can't ever understand the damn drivers), C-3PO his AI blockchain chatbot, etc.

Or how about: "to publish, rather than promote..."?

farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What's the worst-designed, slowest app that still makes a lot of money?
Enterprise-scale.
farnsworthy··on On valuable user feedback
Check out the linked, app, too--good for anyone who wants to learn, practice, and improve typing skills.
farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What foods do you eat to optimise brain function/problem solving skills?
In addition to whatever foods are most nutritious, how about what not to eat?

Sugar and caffeine both have a rebound effect, that big (tasty) sandwich and resulting afternoon hangover, etc.

farnsworthy··on Palantir deployed a predictive policing system in New Orleans
I was going to suggest something, but decided I'd better read the article first. And they simply said it themselves:

"“We’re kind of a prototype,” said Matalin. “Unless you’re the cousin of some drug dealer that went bad, you’re going to be okay.”"

Sorry, cousin! Took your house and car too, I see...

farnsworthy··on Triplebyte Raises $10M from Initialized Capital, Marissa Mayer and Paul Graham
We are bought and sold, again.
farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What do you use instead of Gmail?
I'm only using it as a throwaway, but ProtonMail seems okay.

(Scraped quickly after posting here in a hiring thread, too: "Good day to you and your family. I apologize if the content here-under are contrary to your moral ethics but please treat with absolute secrecy and personal as that is my business proposal to you.")

farnsworthy··on How Inmates Play Tabletop RPGs in Prisons Where Dice Are Contraband
Some of those dice are beautifully designed--it wouldn't surprise me if people would buy them (if able).
farnsworthy··on Officials Admit Japan's 'Helicopter Destroyers' Were Also Designed for Jets
I'm sure the military industrial complex supports this very wealthy nation being freed from its spending constraints as well.
farnsworthy··on The Curious Case of the Hangzhou House?

farnsworthy··on Ask HN: Do you feel you are mostly writing glue code?
Longer than lately. It's "assembly" (not the other one).
farnsworthy··on 21 Years of Income as a Software Engineer in San Francisco
Where are you looking? I think most remote posts I see now are open to people in North America, or one of its time zones.
farnsworthy··on Industrial (durable) laptops with matte screen and without manufacturer malware?
If someone would build a *nix-based laptop with a Mac-like hardware feel and OS integration experience (meaning stuff just works), that would be great. Can I have that right now, please?

Until then, the story remains "MacBook: The Worsening."

farnsworthy··on Multiple vulnerabilities in RubyGems
`gem update --system` # Fixed by >=2.7.6
farnsworthy··on Ask HN: What are the 5 most important techniques you use at job?
How about you?
farnsworthy··on What’s it like to be one of the Jeopardy clue writers?
It reminds me of the role of DMs in RPGs: creating a small world in each question, category, and show for the player to interact with.

This is a trade site? It might have been interesting or helpful for readers if they'd asked about salaries in the field (not necessarily what the subject earns directly, more in general).

farnsworthy··on Ask HN: How does one identify markets and their sizes?
Your characterization might indicate a different incentive, but I suppose everyone knows (and accounts for?) that…

farnsworthy··on Ask HN: How does the perfect office space look like?
If you were leaning towards an open space, I'd suggest including private rooms somewhere in the plan as well (and not dinging people for wanting to ensconce themselves therein).
