fallingmeat··on The Matrix Resurrections estimated to lose Warner Bros $100M
Resurrections was like someone saying, “Hey remember that awesome movie we made in the 90’s? Yeah that was so great…”

Axiom: You can only see The Matrix for the first time, once.

fallingmeat··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2022)
Wisk | High-Integrity Embedded Flight Software; Autonomy Path Planning, Perception and Flight Management Software | Remote | Full Time | https://wisk.aero/careers

We’re looking for a senior engineer to focus on the flight management and behavior logic for our self-flying taxi. You will design, build, and test the algorithms which fundamentally control the high level intent of the vehicle. You will develop logic to manage responses to contingency scenarios, avoid hazards, and perform autonomous landing approaches. You will develop architectures that support the concurrent execution of various vehicle responsibilities. You will leverage modeling and simulation to validate safe, reliable, autonomous behavior. And of course, you’ll test what you build in flight.

Interesting they seem to ad-hoc the lifecycle processes, or at least no mention of any industry standards mandatory (RTCA/DO-178C, ISO26262 or even sys eng like SAE ARP4754, etc). Also, no talk of formal methods (formal modeling or formal verification, a la DO-333 with something like Simulink Design Verf or TLA+). Works for them obviously!
fallingmeat··on Why do we tune in 5ths?
That has to be one of the more civil examples of online discourse I’ve ever seen.
fallingmeat··on Tesla Autopilot system was on during fatal California crash, more safety concern
where is nhtsa? why are they still allowed to test this on public roadways with consumers operating it?
fallingmeat··on Launch HN: H3X (YC W21) – High power density electric aircraft motors
First hires should be people with strong SAE-ARP4754A and SAE-ARP4761 experience. Get your safety assessment correct first. Understand how to build a FADEC function with appropriate development assurance and hardware reliability. Then build your extended team (or outsource). Good luck!
fallingmeat··on Launch HN: H3X (YC W21) – High power density electric aircraft motors
You may know this, but your motor will likely (should) be certified separately from the aircraft.

@jjsylvestre - what are your thoughts on ZeroAvia?
fallingmeat··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
A better guitar interface. Made it for me and it just kinda took off. Turns out not too many better options at this price.

Nope, that's not gonna fit. for sure.

Turn your Macbook up to 11! I've been working on this for about 8 months now, trying to dial in the right form factor, signal quality and price. Just put in the first production order, would love to hear your thoughts, HN.

It's really fun to play with, I kinda feel like maybe I just made a toy for myself, haha. Hope it's a good time for others.

fallingmeat··on Cruise (GM) receives permit for fully driverless cars
with extremely limited operation capability...because its experimental. Like, not where it has large risk of hurting others. Thats what I dont get about this experimental nonsense on public roads
fallingmeat··on Cruise (GM) receives permit for fully driverless cars
Did it? Which agency audited and approved the development process? What was the basis for conformance (to what minimum standards are these vehicle systems said to meet)? What standards are used to demonstrate development and test compliance to that basis?
fallingmeat··on Cruise (GM) receives permit for fully driverless cars
Why is this allowed on public roadways and not confined to a lab until reasonable levels of safety (either via developmental process or time-in-service) can be demonstrated and verified by a regulatory agency? FAA wouldn't let fly a self-proclaimed 'safe' and fully autonomous aircraft around national airspace without such assurance. Why is this different?
fallingmeat··on There are only four billion floats, so test them all (2014)
mmm, disagree based on my experience. oh also I think people on this thread may be misusing the concept of float epsilon. keep in mind that is not the smallest value of a float.
fallingmeat··on There are only four billion floats, so test them all (2014)
fertile indeed!!!! haha

I should learn to read

fallingmeat··on There are only four billion floats, so test them all (2014)
maybe I dont understand, but is this article only trying to suggest exhaustive testing for single precision, single input functions? obviously this approach is not practical as soon as there are multiple inputs or wider precision.
fallingmeat··on Show HN: SmartGuitarAmp – Guitar plugin made with deep learning
Gonna fire off a kickstarter here in about a week and wanted to collect some followers as far ahead as possible! Promo is definitely not my jam! You're right, that page is totally worthless.

Anyway, it's super simple. I just wanted a type-c version of what was already out there, and maybe for it to sound 'reasonable' at a sub $30 price point. It is only 16-bit 48kHz, but does a great job at dialing in tone, recording a quick riff, etc. Bottom line, it's about -90db noise floor and 80db SNR.

Thanks

In case any of you want to play with this on your mac and need a usb type-c interface to try this out! :) sorry for the plug but it was too relevant. Great job on the plugin!

fallingmeat··on Boeing 747s receive software updates over floppy disks
It's going to be required to fly legally, without a waiver. But in terms of the engineering development assurance required, typically it is more 'critical' than radios and less so than flight controls, engine controls or displays. Of course this depends on the safety analysis performed for the individual aircraft and intended operations.

fallingmeat··on Software Engineering Within SpaceX
Does this article imply that RTCA/DO-178B is used as a means of demonstrating compliance in some way, or otherwise is used to define lifecycle processes for their development/verification/systems teams? Anyone know where this was mentioned by SpaceX?
