fallat··on Thoughts on Threads and ActivityPub
They are targeting the enthusiasts . Then the enthusiasts do the rest. It's a good tactic.
fallat··on Tiny volumetric display
I thought so too but look at the dates and the scope of the projects. They're just good at managing their time :) I probably have just as many projects accumulated over the years.
fallat··on $20k bounty was claimed
I agree. Foundational isn't the right word here. I would though accept "impactful". A lot of people care about code formatting "taken care of".
fallat··on $20k bounty was claimed
Nerd sniping is incredibly effective. I would say it's abused quite often too.

I don't know what to say other than, if these people are out of a job, and you're a company funding prettier or need good JS people, please hire them.

fallat··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
YouTube Shorts can remain unpaid, where you watch an ad after every short.
fallat··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
YouTube, Google - just pull the trigger guys. Make YouTube a completely paid for platform.
fallat··on GitHub Renamed Me (2014)
Yeah I think this is the real issue at hand.
fallat··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
> But they already get my user data

You know, I'm curious, I've never asked, and never actually gave it a true, real, hard thought.

You, rando internet person, is making a claim:

"they already get my user data"

So you are completely aware of what this data is?

You are completely aware of its true, real, actual value?

Maybe user data is less valuable than we all perceive?

It could explain the increase in ads.

It could explain why paying for YouTube Premium is an overall much better solution to the problem.

I imagine a future where you don't use YouTube Premium simply because you're checking something quickly somewhere where you're not logged in.

Remember, most videos are 1 time watch. Maybe YouTube should consider a pay-as-you-use system?

fallat··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
The current crypto market activity has nothing to do with crypto news. The macro-economic state of the world is one where everything is going up.
fallat··on A new home and license (AGPL) for Synapse and friends
Lol.
fallat··on Fuchsia F14
> I personally think the time is ripe for an OS with more modern security primitives than Linux/Windows.

What's currently a modern OS that allows for zero security primitives in favor of faster everything?

fallat··on As I retire, my goal now is to release 40+ years of source code
That's not the problem. The problem is saying "the proper way to share code is with GitHub". There is no single proper way to share code, least using a commercial platform(s).
fallat··on As I retire, my goal now is to release 40+ years of source code
> the proper place for sharing code [...] is GitHub

Man how far people are brainwashed.

fallat··on As I retire, my goal now is to release 40+ years of source code
> Today’s trendy development practices are shockingly ephemeral and fragile

My fellow human, you have just nailed what is wrong with today's software.

fallat··on MetNet-3: A state-of-the-art neural weather model
Where can I pay for an API that I can use personally? Seriously, I'm sold. I've seen other prediction models. This one looks fantastic.
fallat··on Why people in Google hate Go?
zig has less memory usage correctness guarantees but its type system is good too.
fallat··on Lindenmayer Systems
BrainFuck? no. L-systems are a string rewriting language basically. L-systems though are more about the patterns they make when they're interpreted more than anything else.
fallat··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
This is an incredible tool. I would love this for French.
fallat··on What SWE job hunting is like right now
Thank you.
fallat··on Introduction to Modern Statistics
> I'm hoping to see, over time, a shift away from ad-hoc null hypothesis testing in favour of linear models (yes, in introductory courses, from the start-- see link below) and Bayesian-by-default approaches.

Is there anything where I can start today, as a guinea pig? My statistics education is basically zero.

fallat··on Kagi finally let me lay Google Search to rest
It's happened too many times in general by other companies, or Kagi?

All things said, I think Kagi really as the incentives aligned. I'm not a fan of Kagi but I believe the "business is sound" :) Sure, I also believe there's no need for such a business (an extension or whatever would suffice), but that doesn't really matter here nor there.

fallat··on How far did my post go on the Fediverse?
> I don't think that's a realistic threat

oh boy, i think you just declared a challenge .

fallat··on Bitmagnet: A self-hosted BitTorrent indexer, DHT crawler, and torrent search
It'd be so nice to have a super simple DHT crawler CLI tool, in both implementation and interface.
fallat··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Thanks for saying this, I'd love to see people talking about this over everything else.

Maybe it looks like multiple companies, i.e. AWS becomes separated with its own CEO, etc.

fallat··on PicoCalc: A fully-functional clone of VisiCalc for the PICO-8
I know, but the problem with that is now each cell is essentially a calculator, and it only makes sense to store numbers, and even on small devices, dealing with spreadsheets isn't the greatest because of screen size. Building discipline also to record data like this just to review once in awhile sounds like a lot of work, vs just opening "L/100km.txt" and calculating. Heck, you could make the calculator program be able to open files where each line is a number and operate on that.
fallat··on Modos Paper Monitor (2022)
I wrote software to at least adjust brightness: https://len.falken.directory/backlight-auto.html

If you're lucky, your monitor can be controlled over HDMI or DisplayPort commands.

Matching the room brightness is exactly why I wrote it and because I wanted a nearly-dependency-free binary.

fallat··on PicoCalc: A fully-functional clone of VisiCalc for the PICO-8
Happy to see a comment like this. One thing I'd add to the list is spaced repetition software for memory strengthening. When you have a moment, you can go over things and strengthen your own memory.

Is a spreadsheet even necessary on the go? Might be better to just have a calculator and store values in a text file?

Also, music? Or is this really a luxury? Truthfully I think yes. But maybe there are some "sound programs" which are "necessary" (like white noise generation)?

I'm sure a lot of us have had this line of thinking many times, but it'd be nice to have a discussion around it :)

fallat··on Should Ethereum be okay with enshrining more things in the protocol?
I think the article is aimed at more experienced Ethereum users. Unfortunately these are real things on Ethereum where only the most involved understand it.

IMO, Ethereum is actually doing a fantastic job at moving itself forward. The issue with Bitcoin has always been the lack of innovation to overcome its fundamental problems. Ethereum isn't afraid to do what needs to be done to become adopted.

Yes, the technology stack is INSANE. As someone who runs a plain text only website, thinks about using Commodore 64s to access the Internet, etc, I can completely ignore the complexity because they are solving an extremely difficult problem.

My hope is when these problems are solved, the teaching and mental model around them will become vastly simplified. Until then, they're in research mode.

fallat··on Conversation with Zuckerberg, this time we talked as photorealistic avatars
I gotta say all I see is narcissism when looking at those photos. I much prefer ones that have nothing to do with the person's face
fallat··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
I honestly hope to god MS continues to produce these keyboards. It's the only keyboard I've rebought because I love it so much. The ergonomic tilt both inward and upward, with the scissor switch keys, all for $100, is f'ing incredible.

This is the defacto keyboard I recommend to everyone who types a ton a day.
