faebi··on Apple's mouse is so bad that Tim Cook prefers using a different brand for work
I‘m on the Trackpad and MX Master combo since a decade and I love it. Use the mouse button for instant screenshots and you are max productive.
faebi··on Ask HN: Has anyone scaled Postgres to over a billion rows?
Yes, openstreetmap.org has over 9 billion rows in a table and documents how they do it. See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Stats
faebi··on Tomato64: A port of Tomato Firmware to x86_64
Is it realistic to get 10gbits networking?
faebi··on NoTunes is a macOS application that will prevent Apple Music from launching
You‘re welcome. The pain is real
faebi··on Study puts fermented foods, not fire, as pivotal moment in human brain growth
That really depends on the country. Some yogurts are very much dead where as in Switzerland they must be alive . Same thing with so many other items.
faebi··on Apple has not fixed the macOS audio left/right balance bug for nearly 10 years
I can imagine, but it happens often to me. It takes some time to notice that something feels off, until I remember. With the app I get the audio-balance-restored notification every now and then. The thing is, it's annoying subtle.
faebi··on Huawei's offices in France raided by financial prosecutors
Right before Chinese new year, wonderful timing
faebi··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
This. Surface rust on the rotors is a reason to fail the TÜV. Seldom used cars have the same issue.
faebi··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Many of these Tesla TÜV inspection faults boil down to surface rust on the braking discs. Tesla's are using regen too much, which let's them accumulate surface rust. This won't fail you in other countries, but it does in Germany since it's part of the braking system. The obvious solution would be a software update to use the breaks occasionally and intensely. I'm disappointed by the TÜV since they do not list the actual most common issues.
faebi··on Sweden (Not Switzerland)
Switzerland is* equally in conflict with Swasiland.

faebi··on Tell HN: 3G sunsetting is remotely killing every Subaru Outback battery
These days you can buy a battery bank which can jump start a car a few times. They are not so expensive (70USD), at least cheaper than road aide assistance.
faebi··on Tell HN: 3G sunsetting is remotely killing every Subaru Outback battery
Consumer report is not that good
faebi··on PC shipments decline slows in Q3 2023, but Apple plunges over 23%
I'm still waiting to buy a mac but I just can't justify paying so much extra for 24-32gb of ram and 1 terabyte ssd. The M series is truly awesome, but 8gb ram with 256gb ssd is just too little
faebi··on Why musicians in Spain are going topless as a radical gesture
„Topless“ is pretty obvious already, no?
faebi··on The UI of Hacker News Is Perfect
You should try mailing lists…jokes aside, I wish the up/down votes would be more touch friendly. Too many accidental votes. At the same time I wish they could store my written comments in local storage until I submit it. Sadly scrolling up too far on iOS or closing the wrong tab happens seldom. A simple onchange callback would be enough. I wouldn't mind some minimal KISS improvements…
faebi··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I would be happy if Youtube Premium contained some form of sponsor blocking/skipping. I don't wanna pay not to see ads, and then being fed them anyway.
faebi··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Don't want to blame too much, but it seems like your internet got stuck in the past. I have 10gbits. I used to have 1gbits for a long time before. 100mbits is not that much these days. Switzerland is talking about a government mandated minimum speed of 80mbits in 2024. That's a 7 hour download on minimum speed for an unusually large game. Switzerland is not alone in this regard. That could be a view of privilege, but average internet speeds are still progressing forward fast.
faebi··on Fermented Foods May Alter Your Microbiome and Improve Your Health
After a hospital visit with lots of antibiotics, I was given some specific bacteria pills and my digestion was left better than before the hospital visit. It seems to be Swiss only and the active bacteria group is called Enterokokken SF 68. Since then I increased the amount of fermented foods. Now I take these pills a few times a year. They are still beneficial to my poop.
faebi··on Did We Just Change Animation Forever?
Or just buy Premium
faebi··on Eduard: Swiss-Style Relief Shading for Maps Using Machine Learning
I heard there is some work going on to import the new extremely high quality relief data from swisstopo into openstreetmap. They are even supposed to be accounting for buildings and forests in order to get the ground level accurately. Not sure where they are right now.
faebi··on Show HN: Yobulk – Open-source CSV importer powered by GPT3
I still like the jsonl standard quite a lot. JSON is pretty much universal, yet it‘s better structured than csv. The ‚l‘ine in jsonl makes it easier parsable and independent from the remaining structure. Keys are duplicated hard but that‘s where gzip comes in.
faebi··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you got on any aspect of life?
Having tight positive feedback loops is great for motivation. For example when writing code, seeing immediately if it works. Either by hot reloading, automated testing or at least building it. I try to find the same in other mundane topics.
faebi··on So what’s next (personal news from developer of popular CoreJS polyfill)
He has nothing to lose, so I would pivot the product like docker did. It‘s painful, and might break it but so it should be.
faebi··on Ask HN: What can you do or learn to experience a better love life?
I found the book "The Psychology of Romantic Love" pretty insightful. It gave me a better view of what love means culturally.

Also there is a saying which goes in the direction: to love, to hate, or not to care. It's great to love, sometimes there can be hate/anger/disagreement, but you know the relationship needs work if you stop caring about each other in certain situations. So whenever one falls into 3, it's time to think, talk and do something. It's not always critical, but it shows an absence of attention for each other.

And my grandmother used to say, sometimes you can be very angry at each other, it's important to discuss it thoroughly, maybe even loud, and then leave it there and go on.

faebi··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I needed to go point farming to answer a question, upvote a question or just about anything. I like points as a qualifier, but heck, give me a way to earn my first points. I don't always have answers, but when I had, I couldn't post them. That made it clear to me that this platform has no future. Look at Twitter or Reddit, somehow they manage to push the boring stuff down and the quality content up. I don't see why SO should be that different.
faebi··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is 5G strictly worse than LTE?
I always thought of 5G being mostly for the carriers instead of being for the customers. The customers realistically don't gain all that much, but the carriers will be able to scale further. Even more customers will be able use the same service some already used. All the marketing fluff was what it was: marketing fluff.
faebi··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
Not really, I don't work for Migros, Galaxus or Digitec. I'm just a happy customer who likes their moves to more transparency.
faebi··on Rails on Docker
I assume because Debian/Ubuntu works more likely out of the box. I tried to use Alpine but ran into various issues in our sad big corporate setup. Additionally, ruby provides base docker images in these too.
faebi··on A large network of fake Google Maps comments/reviews and fake businesses
I see the same thing going on Youtube. Not just one spam account, but whole networks with hundreds of accounts dominating one comment section. All building one coherent story to scam people. It's often the most liked comments having 10x more upvotes than others. These are in the 100's and 1000's of upvotes.
faebi··on You don't have to engage with people on the Internet
I see it as some kind of mental training, puzzle or fun game. Find and engage in an opposing view, no matter the topic. Of course, do that without being negative, sarcastic but positive and solution oriented. Try to expand the space of options and opinions. And for extremist left/right politics, push it that far until nothing makes sense anymore, while confusing the author. And sometimes I learn something new from it. I think this does not work if you think you can't be wrong. I'm wrong all the time and I accept it without hurting my ego.
