factotvm··on Apple expected to adopt keyboard with scissor mechanism for 16-inch MacBook Pro
A solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, in my opinion. That's fine if you want to try and sell TouchBars, but still give me the option to buy a laptop without one.

I'm still holding out hope for a good keyboard and a proper row of keys along the top. In the meantime, I'm typing this on a 2012 MacBook Pro.

factotvm··on Show HN: Hyde – An out-of-line C++ library documentation tool
> please let me know what more you would like to see there

I would love to see Hyde dogfood Hyde. I think that might be helpful to those coming in to check it out. What does the documentation of Hyde look like put through Hyde and output through vanilla Jekyll?

Clever name, by the way.

factotvm··on Discontinuation of Mac Support for Autodesk Alias and VRED
iOS apps can become pretty complicated endeavors with all the moving pieces. It's as complicated as writing any desktop app. In fact, many are currently in the situation where you need to move from an OpenGL implementation to a Metal implementation. I don't see that happening in the browser.

Though, I will say once you get that move completed, you get this: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2018/608/

Metal is nice, but Apple should also support OpenGL, not just WebGL.

factotvm··on Discontinuation of Mac Support for Autodesk Alias and VRED
I left feedback on the page that it wasn't helpful. Saying, "Once Apple releases Mojave, no versions of VRED will run on that operating system due to the OpenGL deprecation" doesn't help their case, because it's just wrong. I do hope Autodesk is able to put pressure on Apple to continue to support OpenGL, but they have to get their facts straight.
factotvm··on Ask HN: What talks or videos do you suggest to watch on a long flight?
You might be more comfortable if you drank a less salty drink.
factotvm··on Ask HN: How do you feel about Slack developer communities?
And I'd rather use Vim.
factotvm··on Ask HN: How do you feel about Slack developer communities?
I disagree with you that Slack is an ergonomic interface. I'll give two examples off the top of my head:

  1. New Threads sort with new items at the top.
This is opposite of everywhere else in the
app. And there is no indicator, e.g. the
     date isn't displayed.

  2. Try backspacing over an @ mention or two.
     It is very unpredictable behavior.
I could find many more if I had Slack in front of me. I'm not saying that IRC is the solution, but I can't believe that Slack is the best we can do.
factotvm··on David Gerard vs. the blockchain, an emerging wiki war
That they're putting in the first sentence.
factotvm··on Macromedia Flash – A New Hope for Web Applications (2002) [pdf]
> I find our current web technologies to be a much better solution over all.

Really? It what sense? I just now see TypeScript coming close to parity with what ActionScript provided several years ago--and the tooling is nowhere near there (though I have not used Visual Studio). I feel like our current web technologies are more the VHS to Flash's Betamax.

factotvm··on Machine Learning Cheat Sheet Map
I feel like that's SourceForge's job. When something gets excitement, that's the last time you want to throw up a page like this. Poor user experience. Would, say, GitHub do this?

I suppose something else could be afoot, but I feel like controls should be in place for that elsewhere, e.g. you can't upload a gigantic binary.

factotvm··on Moto 360
I choose Apple because I want good hardware with a *nix operating system. End of story. Show me an alternative, and you'll pique my interest. In the meantime, you should keep your ridiculous comments about conspicuous consumption to yourself.
factotvm··on Programming Languages Are Simply Not Powerful Enough
I actually clicked on the comments to post how much I enjoyed the experience of reading the post (though I was going to put an "off-topic" disclaimer. To each his own, I guess, but I really enjoyed the reading experience of the theme.
factotvm··on Raganwald's "How to Do What You Love" is free today
I probably would not have bought this book, but I did get a copy because it's free. I hope there is a way to retroactively throw some scratch to the author should I find it useful. That seems like a good model, akin to music "piracy" where I find music I love and then buy it. Or, I guess I could "buy" it again...
factotvm··on If you don’t have pet projects, I don’t think I want you
Then give them a coding problem that takes a short amount of time but allows you to evaluate their skills. I relish these opportunities and respect the companies that ask me to do them.

To keep with your metaphor, ask the carpenter to make you a cabinet door.

Again, I agree with others here... if you're passionate about the startup you're working at (and you should be), that is your side project. I distrust people who work at startups that have side projects.

factotvm··on Jerry Seinfeld's Productivity Secret
When I clicked the link I saw a indeterminate progress bar which spun (and spun, and spun). Then I recalled this little gem about Gawker's redesign: Remove the hashbang and prepend domain with "ca":

Dunno how long this trick will work... Though if I were them, I'd take the hard-learned lesson and revert.

factotvm··on Gruber on iOS In-App Purchases
I think the more relevant case here is United States v Paramount Pictures. To paraphrase (poorly) the decision: You can make movies, distribute movies and/or show movies, but you can't do all three. I hope at some point app stores as the only way to introduce software onto your purchased hardware will be struck down as violating anti-trust laws. But, I'm no lawyer.
