experiment0··on TV Shack owner strikes deal to avoid extradition
Gah, this story always gets me riled up. I'm of the stance that linking to copyright material should most definitely NOT be breaking the law. It doesn't make sense on a number of levels (e.g. What position does this put any search engine in) but additionally he's not actually stolen the content, nor is he providing it, he is merely facilitating the access of it. Its equivalent to a sign on the street saying, "The staff have left this store, take what you want" and I really can't see how that could be construed to breaking the law.

However I think there are other more technical issues that are not based on morality, such as the fact that the destination of a link can change without with the any indication. One minute a link could point to example.com and the next, a copyright infringing video on another video host.

I do realise that in this case there was intent to provide a resource for those looking to illegally watch online content, but that is all it is, a resource.

And the Brit inside me is also getting wound up by the US's involvement in this, the whole extradition thing is completely over the top and as much as I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist exclaiming Hollywoods influence over the government, in this case I think its bang on. I completely agree with the sentiment expressed at the end, that "the US cannot be allowed to be the copyright cops of the world".

experiment0··on Poll: Do you select text while reading?
Yes this is definitely what I do too. I also tend to repeatedly tap the paragraph on the trackpad, so that fits well with your nervous habit analogy.

experiment0··on When You're Visited By A Copy Of Yourself, Stay Calm
The book mentioned by Oliver Sacks on hallucinations looks interesting.

I have to say that one of my favourite neuroscience books has to be, "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" by the aforementioned Dr. Oliver Sacks.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Man-Who-Mistook-His-Wife/dp/03305236...

It's really a great read for anyone interested in neuroscience, psychology or just weird and wonderful stories in general.

experiment0··on Why Google is so Incredibly Undervalued
I think there are a lot of exaggerations in this.

> In the last decade Google invented the web.

> They built an amazing cloud infrastructure that if it's not 'running' the internet today, there's a good change it will in the future

What is this referring to? App Engine?

> No one comes close to Google's reliability and ability to scale. Anyone can fail but Google.

App engine, gmail, google voice have all failed in the past year.

> Google is a leader in website optimizations.

Google are great at optimisation but mozilla and the webkit team are almost on equal footing. They are definitely not "light years ahead".

Even so, I agree with the sentiment. I think google is a great company and some of the more lesser known stuff they do is really exciting. I remember the journal earlier this year about Google's advances in distributed databases. Those kinds of things is what this article should referencing.

experiment0··on A painful Apple recall process
I used to be an Apple store employee in the Family room (where the devices get fixed). In fact I used to work as the exact employee who mainly checked people in for their appointment. The store I worked in had an extremely high volume of people coming in for repairs. Our store policy was, if the person had missed their entire appointment (E.g. 15 minutes late for mac appointments and 10 minutes late for mobile) then they would be turned away, except for in exceptional circumstances (multiple repairs etc).

We reserved some appointments each day for "walk-ins" and these became available every hour, however they were immediately snapped up within 5 minutes of become available.

My point is that, this is a reservation, much like an eye checkup or dentist appointment. If you miss your reservation, that is your responsibility and not ours to try and fit you in. The booking process is explicit in reminding you not to be late.

If the OP genuinely did get turned away for being 5 minutes late, then that is quite harsh, however I think its more likely that he missed his allotted appointment time and in that case it is 100% his fault for not making it. And oh yeah bringing up the Steve Jobs point is so irrelevant and is just hyperbole.

The recall itself is another matter which IS Apple's responsibility and probably should have been handled better.

experiment0··on Twitter to Add Photo Filters to Compete With Instagram
Almost all the photo filters that I've come across in apps other than instagram, have sucked! For example the filters in Path really look a lot less impressive. I'm not sure what it is, but I presume its just the detail that instagram put into each filter.

Saying that I'm sick to death of all these filtered photos now, its now a nice change if I see a normal, unfiltered photo being posted on facebook.

I'm interested in knowing why your post implies that its not useful. I would like to know if its worth reading as I've just added it to Read It Later.

EDIT: Please correct me if you didn't mean to come across that way, it's just the last comment on the blog:

> this post is just terrible. i don't understand why people feel the need to learn a tiny bit about a subject, and regurgitate their misunderstandings through blogging. please take it down, you are making the world a worse place.

has made me wary.

experiment0··on How Apple Store Seduces You With the Tilt of Its Laptops
Tend to do general tidying all throughout the day. Its normally if you walk past and nobody is using it/requires attention then just straighten it up a little bit. There is no set time during the day where everyone adjusts the display though.
experiment0··on How Apple Store Seduces You With the Tilt of Its Laptops
Apple store employee here. This indeed does happen although after a while you get pretty good at judging a 70 deg angle without an app.

From anecdotal experience, it really does make a massive difference in the level of interaction customers have with the products. Even if people just come in because they haven't been in an Apple store before, the first thing they do is push the screen back and by that point they've already started interacting with the computer.

experiment0··on Password Rules
AppleID's can be reset by knowing your email address, date of birth and normally 2 security questions.
experiment0··on Why I Taught My Daughter To Code (A Little)
Science as whole (especially maths, physics and chemistry) is quite inflexible when it comes to tolerating extremely small mistakes. I what you're really describing is the process of logical analysis, being able to look at something completely objectively and say for certain that this won't work or this will work. I think this is why I personally find maths and physical sciences as a whole so satisfying.

experiment0··on Three.js/Ammo.js Quake 3 Physics Test
No I get that and like I said I think its really impressive! But, I think that the controls detract from properly delivering the message (and it would be much more enjoyable to use if movement was less fiddly).
experiment0··on Three.js/Ammo.js Quake 3 Physics Test
Impressive but the controls really let it down. Moving around made me feel sea sick with the room spinning everywhere. The cursor needs to be fixed to the centre of the screen (as in traditional fps's) and not have some sort of momentum whereby you continue spinning round when you're facing the direction you want.

Aside from that it looks really nice!

experiment0··on EU wants to criminalize "Hacking Tools"
This type of legislation clearly stems from ignorance and a lack of understanding. It infuriates me that people can make judgements like this without actually understanding what they are making judgements on.
experiment0··on An Experiment: Polyphasic Sleeping
I attempted the Uberman sleep cycle about a year ago. I managed to get by with 20 minutes sleep every 4 hours. I lasted 2 weeks before bad things started happening (hallucinating, extreme weakness, and major cognitive deterioration). It was a fun experience but something I am convinced is fabricated and doesn't work despite some peoples anecdotal evidence.

Eventually I ran into this blog and when I read it I immediately quit the cycle http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic.htm

If anyone has any questions about it/are thinking of trying a sleep cycle I would be glad to answer!

experiment0··on Google co-founder Sergey Brin spotted wearing Project Glass prototype IRL
In the photo, the design of the glasses looks like the prototype images that were shown when the glasses were announced.

But head mounted displays made by Google haven't been available for years. This is coming from the company who are massively pioneering self driving cars. Those were around before google became involved but since then Google has arguably made much more progress than anyone else (At least to the extent where there cars are most tested and have garnered the most publicity).

experiment0··on Google co-founder Sergey Brin spotted wearing Project Glass prototype IRL
This is exciting. It shows how different Google is to Microsoft and other companies that produce these "future product" videos. Google appears to have made real world progress, rather than just a great marketing video. I can't wait to find out what functionality these early prototypes have!
experiment0··on Coding Horror - Welcome to the Post PC Era
iOS devices have had there tactile interaction down since the beginning. They are so responsive compared to Android devices (from my experience), and so I don't see where Apple could have improved in this area.
experiment0··on Humble Bundle Mojam live stream - notch & co. coding for charity
Does anyone know if Notch has added some sort of vim key bindings to eclipse. It looks like he can jump to the beginnings and ends of words, but I'm unsure if this is either lag of the video, really fast arrow movement or some form of key shortcuts.
