exodust··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
The long-term strategy is peace & stability.

Before you ask "how's that going", remember that doing nothing wouldn't result in a satisfactory answer to that question either.

The idea that "killing the enemies turns the rest of the world into enemies" is absurd. Other countries wouldn't follow the Iranian regime into martyrdom. What would be the reason: "we don't like war"?

Nobody likes war, but also nobody likes evil dictators emerging on this planet and repressing 90 million of its inhabitants, and waging industrial scale terrorism offensives beyond its borders.

exodust··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
I read the statement twice. I can't understand how you landed on "take my money".

Looks like an optics dance to me. I've noticed a lot of simultaneous positions lately, everyone from politicians and protesters, to celebrities and corporations. They make statements both in support of a thing, and against that same thing. Switching up emphasis based on who the audience is in what context. A way to please everyone.

To me the statement reads like Anthropic wants to be at the table, ready to talk and negotiate, to work things out. Don't expect updated bullet-point lists about how things are worked out. Expect the occasional "we are the goodies" statements, however.

exodust··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
"Seppo" is rarely used in Australia today, it's an old bottom-of-barrel word most have never heard of. The neutral "Yank" is more common, but even that only pops up sometimes.

Guessing their comment attempts to expose hypocrisy of America's keenly supported overseas military activity in conflict with fiercely defended domestic free-speech and liberty principles. Deep down, most allies of America want America to defeat foreign adversaries and keep defending those liberties many of us share. In other words there's no hypocrisy, carry on!

exodust··on Jimi Hendrix was a systems engineer
I like how the phone rings in the background on Gypsy Eyes. Wonder who called?

Voodoo Chile lyrics: "on the night I was born the moon turned fire red".

Poetic license? Stellarium reveals on the early evening of November 27, 1942 in Seattle, the moon was low on the horizon - just 25 degrees altitude at 5:30pm, directly East. The sun set at 5pm. While not a full moon it was 85%, so I'm calling it! The moon may have glowed a warm orange-red on the night (of the day) Hendrix was born.

exodust··on Jimi Hendrix was a systems engineer
He was insulted on two counts. Firstly doubting his intelligence. Secondly the insinuation of deception: "You aren't that smart, surely you cheated."

The insulting didn't end there. You asked his parents! Even then you only landed at 90%, yet another insult because why can't he earn 100%? Ethical dilemmas on all sides!

exodust··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
> "culture shift is necessary"

Is it though? When older sibling helps younger sibling with "accessing Steam", or something reasonable like that, even the most sensible and thoughtful older sibling won't be interested in "culture shifts" that block gaming fun.

The alcohol and seatbelt analogies try to elevate equivalence, but miss the mark by a lot. Even one drop of alcohol is obviously not suitable for underage. No seatbelt increases risk no matter your age. "Social media" exposure for the young person is often completely fine and full of "young person" content and activity.

exodust··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
Agreed. I owe a beer to whoever thought of BEM. It's saved precious brain cycles thinking of names. At first I was like what is this bem__opinion--rubbish but then it clicked and my workflow improved.
exodust··on X offices raided in France as UK opens fresh investigation into Grok
> How about you come back when your daughter has a fake AI nude passed around school.

Like any bad behaviour, the grown-up response should be discipline and education.

There's a million ways kids can misbehave. The idea is to get kids ready for the real world, not pretend there's nothing bad out there.

Obviously we don't want "point and click" AI nudes in the hands of minors, or kids having their own AI accounts in the first place. Parents and educators pay for their kid's devices and internet connections. If they're not being responsible, you take away the privilege until they learn about respectful behaviour.

If the kid is allowed to stay out after dark but ends up doing crime at those times, we don't ask the government to impose a curfew on every kid. We discipline the kids involved. And that's my last comment in this thread thank God, what a struggle.

In other words: "I know a thing, but I won't say what. I condemn you for not knowing the thing."

Grok is censored, there's no question. Try it yourself. It can't even handle analysing a 19th century woodcut engraving containing topless mythical beings[1]. Grok refused because Grok has guardrails.

> name of freedom

Speaking of freedom, I lost posting permission yesterday after my earlier post. Even though vile replies were insinuating vile things, my right of reply was taken away. We should never diminish the "name of freedom" as you've just done.

It should go without saying that CSAM is revolting. Who wants to see that stuff? Not me, not most people. Grok can't make that content. Maybe someone got around it temporarily. I've always thought Grok heavily censored, it refuses to analyse an image of the Statue of David because "naughty bits". The ironic and sad thing is a fig leaf gets around that restriction. So the accusation that Grok has no guardrails and can generate CSAM seems at best an anomaly or a lie.

What Stanford study?

If you mean the one titled "Generative ML and CSAM", I can't see any mention of your claim in that study. Care to explain?

exodust··on I miss thinking hard
Agreed. My recent side projects involve lots of thinking over days and weeks.

With AI we can set high bars and do complex original stuff. Obviously boilerplate and common patterns are slop slap without much thinking. That's why you branch into new creative territory. The challenge then becomes visualising the mental map of modular pieces all working nicely together at the right time to achieve your original intent.

exodust··on I miss thinking hard
Plot twist. The comment you love is the cynical one, responding to someone who clearly embraces the new by rising above caution and concern. Your GPT addition has missed the context, but at least you've provided a nice little paradox.
exodust··on Ask HN: Anyone else struggle with how to learn coding in the AI era?
> "the optimal path is somewhere in between"

I think this is the correct answer. Also we technically never stop learning. There's always some new coding trick that alluded us until AI spits it out.

My 2 cents: Switch to chat mode from agent mode and have better chats about approaches to code. I'm constantly challenging AI to explain its code, including talking about pros and cons of this or that method, and even the history of why certain new features were brought to javascript for example. It's also fun to query the AI about performance optimisation, presuming we all want the least amount of cycles used for the given procedure.

exodust··on Coding assistants are solving the wrong problem
> nobody is using it to sort issues for importance

True, and I'd add the reminder that AI doesn't care. When it makes mistakes it pretends to be sorry.

Simulated emotion is dangerous IMHO, it can lead to undeserved trust. I always tell AI to never say my name, and never use exclamation points or simulated emotion. "Be the cold imperfect calculator that you are."

When it was giving me complements for noticing things it failed to, I had to put a stop to that. Very dangerous. When business decisions or important technical decisions are made by an entity that literally is incapable of caring, but instead pretends to like a sociopath, that's when trouble brews.

exodust··on Golden Ratio using an equilateral triangle inscribed in a circle
Can you elaborate on how it deepened your appreciation? An example perhaps?
exodust··on You have to know how to drive the car
Perhaps oversimplified. The manager might not want you tethered to his/her in-box like a puppy on a leash.

"When things happen", sounds risky. You don't want to be drip-feeding emails about individual things as they happen. Perhaps this is obvious, but you'd keep your own notes and try to condense into a nice little list for discussion when you next catch-up.

exodust··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
I'm still on Windows 10, and the only issue I have is the huge nag-screen promoting Windows 11 that appears sometimes when I boot up.

No option to say "don't show again". If anyone knows how to permanently disable this intrusive Windows 11 propaganda screen, please share. I tried searching for a solution but the one I found - a registry change, didn't work.

exodust··on Your brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant
Similarly I leave Cursor's AI in "ask" mode. It puts code there, leaving me to grab what I need and integrate myself. This forces me to look closely at code and prevents the "runaway" feeling where AI does too much and you're feeling left behind in your own damn project. It's not AI chat causing cognitive debt it's Agents!
exodust··on Show HN: Beats, a web-based drum machine
I'm getting a little popping on Firefox Windows, which disappears if I remove the kick step on second row of the default bosa nova. Nice work anyway, the UI is immediate and instant play.
exodust··on Show HN: Fall asleep by watching JavaScript load
in front of a screen? does the user tuck themselves in bed with lights off and suspend the device above their face?
exodust··on Show HN: Fall asleep by watching JavaScript load
I presume there's no actual loading happening, it's just a timer. Real loading spinners aren't fun, but fake ones are next level bad. Not sure why anyone would deliberately put themselves through this experience.
exodust··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (January 2026)
> "Not unlike digital photography..."

The important difference with digital photography is the phone photographer won't use pro lighting, different lenses, reflectors, bounced flash or other gear that contributes to the "pro photography" look.

With software, vibe-coders might use AI agents that have all the equivalent "pro photo gear" for professional output.

There's a moat around pro-photography protecting it from its snack-size phone-camera cousin. All those lights, lenses and tripods are the physical moat. If we ponder the question whether software development has an equivalent moat, the gp's gloom may be warranted.

exodust··on Grok turns off image generator for most after outcry over sexualised AI imagery
It's just manipulated photos. No need to panic.

Everyone knows photos can be easily faked. The alarmist response serves no purpose. AI itself can be tasked to make and publish fake photos. Will you point pitchforks at the generators of the generators of the generators?

Fake content has a momentary fizz followed by a sharp drop-off and demotion to yesterday's sloppy meme. Fading to nothing more than a cartoon you don't like. Let's not, I hope, go after "cartoons" or their publishers.

exodust··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
> "you're circumventing the method of paying for content"

Because the payment method is a scam. Imagine if all car owners were charged the same price for fuel regardless of how much they used.

Likewise, imagine watching 10 videos and being charged the same as someone who watches 200 videos.

We should pay for what we watch. The end. Ad blocking is not piracy when the payment option is at best a blunt extraction of funds from my wallet, at worst a sleazy shakedown.

exodust··on A new bridge links the math of infinity to computer science
Wouldn't it follow that those "things" we're pointing to aren't really "things" because they're all leaking and fuzzy? Begging the question, what ends up on a list of things that do exist?
exodust··on Roc Camera
Perhaps if it measured depth it could detect "flat surface" and flag that in the recorded data. Cameras already "know" what is near or far simply by focusing.
exodust··on How I influence tech company politics as a staff software engineer
It's a shame when resigning is the only way out. Before reaching that point, the usual strategies should be attempted:

  Picking your battles;
  Negotiate rather than fight;
Be better at analytics and research than anyone else. So you have the data to measure or predict success about a particular feature or direction.
Armed with your data, you must carefully communicate findings without shaming others.
It's a fine line between fostering a positive work environment in the face of misguided decisions, and being condescending or derisive towards other team members. There is no silver bullet, but a touch of self-deprecating humour never hurt. If you advice isn't taken, you'll have a non-snarky receipt. Any email written with an irritated tone, will look twice as bad months later.
