Backend/Platform engineer in Minnesota with special interests in Identity/AuthX, Observability, and Messaging. Expertise in C# and F#, competent in Rust (and continually improving), interested in functional programming. M.Sc. and ten years experience in Control Systems Engineering, before transitioning to Software Engineering over a decade ago.

Available for consulting and contracting. Expertise in refactoring/replatforming large or complex legacy systems, migrating from in-house identity/auth systems to SaaS/self-hosted identity platforms, etc. I have extensive experience successfully managing/implementing complex 6-12 month projects on large business-critical production systems transparently without introducing downtime or customer impact.

evntdrvn··on Why I Use Elm in 2023
Interesting! From a surface language level it feels a lot like F#, but with purity and a managed effects system--which is something that I've kinda wished for/had to build patterns for in F# codebases... I'll have to keep an eye on it, thanks! (reading through the FAQ, there are some interesting design decisions! I appreciate the pragmatic focus. Didn't realize that it was non-curried lang until the FAQ)

I joke with people that F# is “easy-button Rust”, so that also tracks lol
evntdrvn··on A guide to closures in Rust
people casually using the term closure for anonymous functions has caused so much confusion over the years lol
evntdrvn··on A guide to closures in Rust
There’s so much confusion out there due to people throwing out the term “closure” imprecisely, ugh

evntdrvn··on How much memory do you need to run 1M concurrent tasks?
For C#, you might want to try a different version with ValueTask instead of Task. It’s more memory-friendly.

It would also be interesting to try Native AOT compiling both versions…

yeah it's pretty dang handy :) As long as it's not abused or overused.
evntdrvn··on Is sequential IO dead in the era of the NVMe drive?
fwiw Seagate also experimented with this for hard drives, it was pretty neat--ethernet-connected KV-addressed hard drives. I don't think it made it to an actual shipped product, but it did make it to "partner field testing phase".
evntdrvn··on Monoliths are not dinosaurs
Neat!

It would be awesome if you could set up a parallel “monolith-stories.com” site with the exact same content, except for inverting the sentiment scale :)

Seriously!!

The way they're implemented, I've found them pretty intuitive.

Avionics manufacturers are generally pretty serious about Ux. Or at least the test pilots berate them into caring, when I was in Flight Test Engineering I remember a lot of "spicy" feedback about avionics usability issues getting sent back to the manufacturers lol

evntdrvn··on Announcing WCGI: WebAssembly and CGI
The amount (and evolution) of acronyms in the WASM space is kinda overwhelming so I might be out to lunch…

At the top of the article it says “…compiling them to WASI”, but is that a semantically/technically correct statement? My understanding would be more that it should say something like “compiling them to WASI-compliant WASM” or something. Or can you actually “compile to WASI”

evntdrvn··on Tailscale Funnel now available in beta
yayyy! Thanks Xe and friends!

Question about the docs, it mentions that "The WebFinger endpoint must be hosted at the domain of the email address provided during setup". Would it be possible to support a subdomain?

Also, a small ask: could the webfinger request that's sent include the `rel` and a well-known user resource params, for the situations where there's already a webfinger implementation there that isn't 100% under dev control which requires these params like

     GET /.well-known/webfinger?
            resource=tailscale-webfinger%3A%40mydomain.com&
            rel=http%3A%2F%2Fopenid.net%2Fspecs%2Fconnect%2F1.0%2Fissuer
            HTTP/1.1
     Host: mydomain.com
lastly, is this request resent at every auth event?

Thanks!@!

evntdrvn··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
I’m really curious where you work, the team you mention in your last paragraph sounds like my dream job :D
evntdrvn··on Rust Is a Scalable Language
Honestly, the built in tooling has been good enough for me, in the .NET Core era (especially within the last few years). The MSFT CLI/IDE team has finally had the chance to fix some previous really annoying issues and limitations in the last few years, so the experience has gotten quite a bit smoother.

I know people that looove Paket, especially in the F# community, but I’ve been happy enough with things now to not feel like I need to invest the effort in adopting it.

evntdrvn··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
Don’t be too hard on yourself, the learning curve as a new infra/platform engineer is VERTICAL. Try not to hide that you’d benefit from some bootstrap assistance in a misguided effort to “not look clueless”, that’s a fast ride to a bad perf review or worse. One strategy that is incredibly effective in this situation is to ask if you can shadow an experienced/skilled team member for a sprint or two, and then switch to pairing with the same type of person for the following month or two. Your rate of learning will skyrocket using this approach, compared to trying to “go it alone” Good luck and enjoy the ride!

At least there is a Cosmos emulator... There has been a ticket open requesting an Azure Service Bus emulator for FIVE YEARS lolsob https://github.com/Azure/azure-service-bus/issues/223

Which is too bad, because ASB is awesome, IMO the best Azure service.
