evilduck··on Fast and Hard Code
This sounds like you don't like to dig for digging's sake and are projecting.
evilduck··on Making holograms with a pen plotter
Something tells me you didn't open the posted link.

evilduck··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I don't underestimate it, I know pretty clearly what it's not worth because it's all my SIL-SAHM does in life. It's possibly the difference between them being homeless or hungry, but the last few years of inflation have obviously offset whatever it had been worth before. They'll never penny pinch themselves out of poverty. It's the behavior of a household not thriving.
evilduck··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
The extra steps with AI are a better and faster user experience than their website.
evilduck··on Hardware backdoors in some x86 CPUs
That’s insane. I actively avoid buying things that are pointlessly internet connected nowadays. An air purifier’s buttons should be simple electromechanical switches.
evilduck··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Microsoft also effectively killed a beloved OEM phone brand as a tax write-off in the process of Windows Phone shenanigans, and famously paid developers to publish shovelware to their app store, which synonomized their platform with low quality apps. Neither were very bright strategies. Ballmer also decided to sit at the starting line for a few years and only decided to enter the race right around the time iOS and Android were taking their victory lap. Being free at the end is the easiest way to also be equated with dead. Remember the final death throes of the Palm Pre and PalmOS? They were basically giving those away right before the brand completely died.
evilduck··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
Climate-wise I presume. Spain sits on a similar latitude to Connecticut, and much of the EU sits north of the US population.
evilduck··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
It's already kind of that way with MCP servers popping up everywhere. The JIRA MCP server is like a couple orders of magnitude faster to work with than the website itself.
evilduck··on Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac
Yes, it’s dismissive, intentionally and abrasively so. Because the author is being disrespectful to the reader, expecting them to put more effort into it than they did. I will happily be uncurious about a text the author couldn't even bother to proofread and clean up. Life is finite, LLMs could generate more text than I could ever possibly read, there has to be a quality filter we all apply and I’ve drawn my line in the sand.

You’re arguing in favor of what I view as pollution. I’m not lacking thought, it didn’t terminate, you just value slop for reasons I don’t.

evilduck··on Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac
Saying that something is thought terminating is thought terminating, it's the laziest "I win" bullshit approach ever. A more nuanced approach: don't produce slop and people won't dismiss it as lazy bullshit either.

Because it's a strong signal of AI slop. Why put in more work than the "author" did?

If the author generated text that required no effort, and has no understanding of the contents of the material generated, and no self-awareness of their behavior and how the audience will receive it, it definitely doesn't warrant wasting a single second reading it.

Now, granted, maybe they did review it, maybe they did understand it, maybe they did know how it would be received and merely made a mistake, but how are we to know? It quacks like a duck.

evilduck··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
At that point, gzipped Preact is only 1k larger (and 10k smaller than htmx) and provides a pretty comprehensive and common set of solutions to the majority of front end problems compared to hand rolling everything.
evilduck··on Gsxui – Shadcn-style components for Go
It's easy to follow, it's a knee jerk tribalism reaction and not a logical or informed one. Go attracts backend or anti-frontend people so anything intermingling the two will draw out the commenters who bemoan anything that realistically builds a modern website. Just ignore it, your choice for dev tooling is practical and makes sense to me.
evilduck··on Micro-SaaS Is Dead. Service With A Software Replaces It
Chrome's built in Lighthouse scoring fails your site on lacking sufficient contrast.

Subjectively, even without vision problems, I strongly dislike your choice also.

evilduck··on JEP 541: Deprecate the macOS/x64 Port for Removal
The writing has been on the wall for the last 7 years and the LTS of JDK 25 goes until 2030, 11 years from the point Apple announced their intentions. Java for Mac apps or native Java backend development has always been niche as well. For Java development for Linux hosting, you still have a path forwards beyond 2030 with virtualization. How's your SPARC dev machine holding up?
evilduck··on Eight Newly Produced MQ-9 Reaper Drones Destroyed in Iranian Strike
When the Commander-in-Chief guts the military leadership to ensure loyalists are at the top and instates a fool as the head of the department, is it any wonder what is causing military leadership and strategy failures?
evilduck··on Why do you suck at juggling now?
"The only secret of magic is that I'm willing to work harder on it than you think it's worth." - Penn Jillette
evilduck··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
You just described the complete opposite of the StackOverflow experience.
evilduck··on Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Bikesheds
This whole thing can be reduced to "think of the children", see the literal example around paragraph ~30. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone try so hard to equate being pro-privacy with being pro-crime.
evilduck··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Yeah, curious here too. Torvalds would need to pass first I think, and I just don't see other major players like RedHat, Google, Canonical, or Valve introducing this themselves or agreeing to do it in aggregate. And as end users we could still fork and patch it out. Some shitty company might try but I don't think it would stand.
evilduck··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
Does it matter? A site and community that refuses to allow or accommodate anyone to grow and learn as a new user will quickly run out of users. The gatekeeping on SO is a blockade, not a teaching mechanism.
evilduck··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
If they're benchmaxed on SVG pelicans then the outcome of that has still produced a surprisingly good generic SVG image generator.

Go invent your own random alternatives and the AI models have across the board gotten better over time. Insects playing sports, anthropomorphic fruits performing martial arts, wizards conjuring weapons of WWII, whatever you can imagine. I've tried a lot of these, well beyond what I think would be a reasonable thing to specifically train as combinations. If they have given it a corpus of SVG drawings it has learned to extrapolate.

(note: wizards conjuring a tank got me a surprise animated SVG with my Qwen 3.6 35B model)

evilduck··on How I use HTMX with Go
“If done correctly” applies to about everything though.
evilduck··on Codex scraped the ICM website and discovered 2026 Fields Medal winner list
I'll take a wild guess and assume they are of a German or Polish language background. Wait 'til you encounter a French person who accidentally uses guillemets if you want one even «weirder».
evilduck··on Don't you mean extinct?
Why pay for a car to drive when you have working legs? To go further, faster.
evilduck··on Don't you mean extinct?
You can accomplish quite a lot with smaller local models on reasonably priced pro tier hardware (not cheap hardware, but very attainable hardware for anyone making average software engineer money). Qwen 3.6 27B and 35BA3, Gemma 28B, and so on are incredibly beneficial even if Anthropic and OpenAI produce better options.

Failing that, GLM 5.2 is open weights, trades blows with current frontier models and widely available on commodity inference providers. And you could run it yourself if you do actually have the resources.

evilduck··on Opinionated and easy Pi.dev configuration
Making the upgrades or maintaining or crafting from scratch a plugin isn't free, it costs tokens and time and attention. And you're almost assuredly reinventing a wheel that someone else already did and probably did better. I like have the ability, but I prefer not needing it.
evilduck··on FDA rejects petition to set PFAS limits in food
PFAS doesn't immediately harm you like missing a few pints of blood does.

And it's not like you're concentrating higher levels of PFAS into the recipient, they likely have the same average blood concentration levels as the donor does since we're all equally exposed to the same sources.

evilduck··on We charge $10k a week to delete AI-generated code
Most of the new Github bloat will just be thrown away. Vibe coding scratches an immediate itch and it's easy to do. Once the problem changes nobody is going to update the first project because that's hard, they'll just vibe code an entirely new solution leaving the first to rot until they delete their dead repo clutter or move on from the company and the account and all of its repos are deleted in one fell swoop.
