evilbob93··on I brought my childhood imaginary friend back to life using A.I
After watching the movie Bigbug on Netflix, I am convinced that there is a small, quiet cadre of people who are right now building their own implementation of the robot boy that many of us had shown to us in movies (anakin and c3p0) and myriad old school science fiction novels.

Since seeing that, my own efforts have crystalized into the project that I am building, ostensibly for a grandchild, inspired by my own grampa's talking plastic skull via ventriloquism in his workshop. Mine is to be a cybernetic version.

* Computer vision? openCV looks useful * Language? GPT-3 or GPT-V if you want to run on your own hardware. * Robot scooter projects are all over the place.

evilbob93··on Ask HN: What do you think of the Wordle guy not monetizing it?
Not saying you're wrong, but considering the societal disruption of people (anyone, including people that the society would like to keep around for one reason or another) caused by people checking out because of their definition of decreased quality of life. It's not just about whether the doctors think that your meat sack is gonna fail critically in the next 6 months (one criteria for assisted suicide) but whether you like what you see when you wake up and look around each day. If it's not fun any more, it will become harder to sell the idea of sticking around.
evilbob93··on Ask HN: Are Indeed, LinkedIn the go-to places for exploring new jobs?
In the US, there are laws against calling after 9:00. And like you, I don't answer calls from unknown numbers any more, whether or not my phone identifies it as likely scam.
evilbob93··on Ask HN: What was it like to use BBS?
IBM PCs didn't come out until after I was out of high school. A few years later I decided to join a meetup of the people who were users on the BBS I was on. It was mid 1980s, and it turned out that all the users I had been chatting with were in High School. First of many experiences where I felt pretty old.

One day in the mid 1980s we were checking the speeds available in our VT100 terminals. For fun we dropped it down to 150 to see what that was like. It was so slow that when you hit the delete key, you could watch it backspace, type a space, then backspace again.
evilbob93··on Science and Sanity (1933) [pdf]
If you have read Robert Anton Wilson, you're likely familiar with his idea of E Prime, which is essentially English without the identity form of "is". It's a mind bending notion to integrate. A lot of E Prime came from Science and Sanity.

An example is that saying "the book is blue" describes not a property of the book, but rather the interaction between my senses and the book, and a more "sane" way to say what is probably meant is "the book looks blue to me" so that the statement includes me and my senses in the interaction.

I would say that we have learned, collectively, some strategies that work, for various definitions of "work".
evilbob93··on Review of the Buick Riviera’s ‘touchscreen’ from 1986 [video]
When I worked in the auto industry at Buick/Oldsmobile/Cadillac Engineering , I got to see one of these while it was in prototype stage.

One reason this didn't take hold is that they found that this interface forced a driver to take their eyes off the road to do basic functions like changing the climate settings.

When I got to ride in this, there was a maintenance screen you could pull up by pressing three of the buttons. This screen had functions like displaying and modifying the throttle angle, fuel-air mixture, etc. While driving around, we were able to change the fuel air mixture such that the car started running badly and we could smell gas.

As I heard that, I had a flashback to the first moments in many rental cars in my life.
