evilantnie··on Netflix is now worth more than $100B
It's possible, but they're still cheaper than HBO Now, Showtime Now, etc. I found myself spending more time in Netflix watching their exclusively produced content than from their 3rd party library over the last year. As long as they can keep producing quality content to add to their library, I think they're in good shape.
evilantnie··on Notes from the Intelpocalypse
I'm not 100% sure here, but I believe this is the specific kernel level fix that also addresses variant 1 https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/12/27/2
evilantnie··on Walking away from $30,000 of DJI bounty money [pdf]
The road to hell is paved in good intentions. If I had to guess, a well meaning and experienced engineer or engineering leader proposed launching a legit bug bounty program. Maybe they pitched the idea to their boss, showing them hackerone or bugcrowd as an example. Everyone thought it was a good idea, but the further the concept shifted along in development and away from the original engineer, the less people understood what a bug bounty program actually is. By the time it gets through legal, and marketing, and the executive team, it turns into a downside protection effort rather than quality/security improvement effort. I have to imagine this is pretty common in large organizations that keep their departments siloed off from one another, reducing collaboration.
evilantnie··on ShadowBrokers: The NSA Compromised the SWIFT Network
If we do buy into the fact that the NSA is behind the leaks, it would most likely be in response to some sort of loss-aversion or negative leverage play. i.e. they want to severely devalue these assets on the black market.
evilantnie··on Snap Committed to Spend $1B on Web Services with Amazon
I doubt their concern is saving money in this case, it's more about time to market for new products/features. If they can get a head start by spending more up front and focus entirely on their product, they may be able to grow significantly faster than if they kicked off a multi-year effort to role their own infrastructure.
