evantahler··on Start Self Hosting
Exactly! I guess above by “UX” I meant far more than the screens you interact with - running the app, storage, integrating with mobile and home ecosystems, etc. Sure it’s fun to learn how all of that works, but for a few 100$, you can really move a family to fully self-hosted (content) in a day.
evantahler··on Start Self Hosting
The world of Synology products is fascinating in this regard.

Take photos - They’ve got iOS and android apps that replace your photo app; a truly self-hosted server you run in your home with pretty easy to use DNS support tools. Even shared albums work without much fuss. I think they’ve invested in the UX in recent versions, and it shows.

evantahler··on Grouparoo SyncModes – Choices for syncing profile data
Grouparoo v0.3 introduces `syncModes`, which is our framework for bringing clarity to the myriad ways that folks' APIs handle updating data. Grouparoo now unifies this complexity into the following choices:

  * Sync: Add, update and remove profiles from the destination as needed.
  * Additive: Add new profiles and update those that already exist in the destination, but never remove anyone.
  * Enrich: Update profiles that already exist in the destination, enriching them with additional data and group membership information. No profiles are added or removed.

evantahler··on Ask HN: How Long Is Your CI Process?
Hard to say without knowing /what/ you want to accomplish in your CI process, so maybe some open source examples will help:

* A "complex" library (node-resque). In CI (CircleCI) we install deps, compile Typescript to JS, test on 3 versions of node, and build docs. 4 min w/ some parallelization https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/actionhero/node-re...

* A web server framework (actionhero): In CI(Github Actions) we install deps, compile Typescript to JS, test on 3 versions of node, and build docs. 7 min w/ some parallelization https://github.com/actionhero/actionhero/actions/runs/801273...

* A Monorepo (Grouparoo): In CI (CircleCI) we install deps, compile Typescript to JS, run migrations, check licenses, test UIs, CLI tools, Plugins, and try out a few different databases. 5 minutes with rather extreme parallelization https://app.circleci.com/pipelines/github/grouparoo/grouparo...

In my experience, the biggest wins in CI speed improvements come from parallelization. You can parallelize by either running multiple processes/containers or by running tests in parallel on the same container (jest, parallel_tests, etc)

evantahler··on Launch HN: Porter (YC S20) – Open-source Heroku in your own cloud
We are early Porter users, and it strikes the right balance of being being "full service" to get you started quickly but then letting you tweak what we need in custom ways as you grow.

The setup was simple - EKS cluster created for you (or you can use your own), automatic bot instrumentation to build and push containers for you, Heroku-like "git-ops" etc.

But, under the hood they made the (IMO) wise choice to use each cloud's tooling as much as possible so you can modify things as needed. For example, the EKS cluster on AWS is in a regular autoscaling group. Persistent drives for containers (if you opt-into them) are regular EC2 block devices, etc.
