evanjrowley··on My daughter's boyfriend gave me a custom keyboard? I don't like it. What now?
You can tell him that you gave it to your D&D dungeon master friend who really loved it.
evanjrowley··on Keychron's Nape Pro turns your keyboard into a laptop‑style trackball rig
Some great options have been mentioned already.

Another interesting option is the HHKB Studio keyboard. https://hhkeyboard.us/hhkb-studio/product

HolyKeebs also has TrackPoint modules available for some exotic ergo split keyboards: https://holykeebs.com/

A very exotic option is the Svalboard, which is available with both trackball and trackpoint configurations: https://svalboard.com/

evanjrowley··on Keychron's Nape Pro turns your keyboard into a laptop‑style trackball rig
I love that keyboard, but I wish they'd increase the TrackPoint cut out for the GHB keys more. It's not the easiest when attempting to move the cursor to the top-left, top-right, and bottom areas of the screen.
evanjrowley··on Keychron's Nape Pro turns your keyboard into a laptop‑style trackball rig
This keyboard is one of the staples of my desk. Saying this as someone who also dabbles in all of the exotic stuff. Sometimes you need a reliable, small, and convenient keyboard - that's where these tiny Lenovo trackpoint keyboards fit in every time.

3D files would be fantastic.

Maybe one day we'll see a group buy with an all-aluminum case and PVD brass bottom weight.

evanjrowley··on Keychron's Nape Pro turns your keyboard into a laptop‑style trackball rig
>Fun design and internals aside, the new trackball module seems to have a 1/4-20 threaded tripod mount on the bottom, a common addition for ergonomic split keyboards that opens up a lot of options for angular mounting and similar ideas.

Source: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Keychron-Nape-Pro-wireless-tra...

I'm glad they implemented this! Checking the photo of this particular feature, it seems the 1/4-20 thead is paired with another hole: https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/Notebooks/News/_nc5/...

I was very hopeful that the hole arrangeemnt would be for an ARRI pin-lock: https://www.arri.com/resource/blob/320202/04f5271d1d21f8c7db...

Referring back to the Nape Pro picture from CES, this appears not to be the case. One thing these 1/4-20 mounted ergonomic keyboard designs need is a locking mechanism that prevents the keyboard from gradually pivoting during regular use. For the Nape Pro, I wonder how feasible it would be to drill the hole into it's exterior?

If you're thinking of mouting these at the edge of a surface, then make sure your 1/4-20 mounting arms use the ARRI pin lock on that end. It's annoying when your keyboard pivots, but if the whole mounting arm pivots, then you might be in trouble (i.e, a loosened mounting arm swings 180 degrees down towards the ground, potentially damaging your keyboard).

Here are some examples of those types of arms from SmallRig:

evanjrowley··on Windows 8 Desktop Environment for Linux
Glad to see someone was inspired to do this! I believe the Windows 8 UI was good - one of my unpopular opinions explained below.

I never personally owned a Windows 8 computer, but I used some at work. I logged in to Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 on a daily bases for several years - these had the same type of start menu.

Prior to this experience on Windows, I was a Mac OS X "power user" enjoying Quicksilver[0][1] on Snow Leopard (10.6) through (Mavericks 10.9). It's mode of interaction[2] was very similar to Spotlight[3] built-in to modern macOS.

I also learned to touch type on that very same *MacBook while waiting for a plane in an airport terminal.

All this is to say that the concept of hitting a key and typing to launch an application felt very natural to me when I first encountered the Windows 8 UI. I never felt the need to use a traditional start menu, despite having clocked lots of hours on Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, and older versions. in the office. When Windows 10 brought back the traditional start menu, I only ever searched through it like I would have on a Windows 8 or MacOS system.

Recent benchmark testing[4] showed Windows 8.1 to be faster in many ways compared to Windows 10 and Windows 11. I was surprised someone actually did this, but not surprised at the results!

Perhaps one of the reasons why I preferred it more than Windows 10 and Winows 11 is the Control Panel was still very usable in Windows 8. As someone who worked on Server versions of Windows, the Control Panel was very much embedded in my muscle memory. The erosion of it in subsequent versions of Windows is the source of my growing pains. That, plus all of the popular reasons why Microsoft/Windows gets backlash today.

* The 2010 MacBook was advertized with a 10 hour battery life. Many years would pass before Apple would again advertize such a long battery lifetime. I had upgraded the RAM and swapped the optical drive for a second 2.5 hard disk, then re-installed Mac OS X in software RAID1 mode. It was extremely stable for many years until the day I decided to decomission it (ran 'sudo rm -rf /' at the Terminal). I.e., the type of stuff that would give Tim Cook indegestion.

evanjrowley··on Exercise can be nearly as effective as therapy for depression
I've had many exercise regimens throughout my life but never has it ever helped me with mental health in any way.

Exercise has always been a mental drain for me. A day when I go to the gym is a day when I give up mental capacity that could have been used for something else. I'll be less effective at work and less organized at home. It's like my IQ's dropped by double digits.

I drink enough water and electrolytes, in case anybody's wondering.

evanjrowley··on Exercise can be nearly as effective as therapy for depression
Another quote from Jim Carey:

People talk about depression all the time.

The difference between depression and sadness is sadness is just, you know, from happen stance. Whatever happened or didn't happen for you...

... and depression is your body saying fuck you, I don't want to be this character anymore, I don't want to hold up this avatar that you've created in the world. It's too much for me.

So, a friend of mine who's a spiritual teacher has a really good take. His name is Jeff Foster, and his take on it is that they should change [how we think of] the word "depressed" as "deep rest"

deep rest - your body needs to be depressed, It needs deep rest from the character that you've been trying to play.

My eyes have opened up to the pitfalls of TPM recently while upgrading CPUs and BIOS/UEFI versions on various hardware in my home.

VMs typically do not use TPMs, so it is not surprising that the feature was not being used there. One common exception is VMware, which can provide the host's TPM to the VM for a better Windows 11 experience. One caveat is this doesn't work on most Ryzen systems because they implement a CPU-based fTPM that VMware does not accept.

What is your goal with the Cerelog ESP-EEG?

During my mid-teens, I got this wild idea that I could reproduce the experience of psilosybe cubensis by learning to mimic the brainwave patterns through the practice of neurofeedback. I didn't have an EEG, but I learned about the OpenEEG project. Eventually I bought an OpenEEG-based MonolithEEG[0] during a summer where I was fortunate enough to be in west Europe.

Shortly thereafter, I realized I had no experience at all with electronics assembly, and the fever dream quickly evaporated. The MonolithEEG PCB was lost to time.

It blows my mind that the most ubiquitous computer screen resolution worldwide is considered too niche for decent support by the Zed project. Hopefully that will change in 2026?

evanjrowley··on iPhone driving macOS 15.6, with native M4 driver partially patched for A18
Prices on MacBooks have gone down significantly, but compared to a Windows laptop with comparable storage, you've payed more for Apple up until recently. Things have tilted in Apple's favor after RAM price increases have led to all consumer PC RAM reaching Apple-like prices.

I made my comment as I someone with two MacBooks and the point still stands that most of an iPhone's potential is forever locked away by Apple.

evanjrowley··on Why users cannot create Issues directly
As someone wearing the post-sales support hat for a non-OSS product, I appreciate use of "ready" tags in Jira. Unlike OSS, our engineers prioritize KPIs to be compensated for their work, and so we must find a way to track the triage discussions within Jira. In a significant way, Jira is solid proof that work happened, even if no actual code was pushed into the repo. If the support team has an unconfirmed bug that requires a technical deep dive, then the "non-ready" Jiras seem like a good fit. I'm open to a better way of doing this and would like to learn more about alternatives, but for now, this is how the teams engage.
evanjrowley··on iPhone driving macOS 15.6, with native M4 driver partially patched for A18
Apple's software restrictions are quite unfortunate. So many people with an iPhone will not switch away from Windows due to the higher cost of Macbooks (among other reasons), when in reality, the device in their pocket is capable of running macOS. The untapped potential is why I cannot justify buying a personal iPhone.

evanjrowley··on Slate AX: Wi-Fi 6 Gigabit travel router
I've been using 2 of these as APs for a few years.

They've worked well, except for one time when it seems as though they magically turned on IPv6: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/incident-involving-ipv6-and-glin...

I wish I had dug deeper on that incident to determine how the configuration changed on those devices.

Eventually I'd like to try the upcoming Wifi 7 capable Mikrotik router, recently announced in this teaser video: https://youtu.be/05SAcDT8xLw?si=5Ys0MA_6r3ruW93-

I feel as though the support situation is better for Mikrotik's RouterOS because there is not a situation where the vendor can point to the software and shrug their shoulders. GL.iNet can still blame a problem on an OpenWRT quirk, and GL.iNet devices flashed with pure OpenWRT only receive best-effort / volunteer support.

evanjrowley··on Why do men find it so hard to connect with other people, and their own emotions?
It's also worth acknowledging the effects of testosterone (which males have in greater quantity) over emotional processing, behavior, and development. In human society, these are complicated topics which are difficult to properly examine in vitro, and so modern research has resulted in conflicting conclusions.

Question for $LLM: Aggression (and adversity) have prominent roles in the lives of male mammals. How do our synthetic concepts used to rationalize violence weigh against the reasons for it we see in nature among lions, chimpanzees, wolves, and dolphins?

evanjrowley··on Stimulant medications affect arousal and reward, not attention networks

Supporting this observation: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10....

I've been looking for theories for why 10mg Adderall seems to give me a brief feeling of drowsiness ~30 minutes after taking it.

The state regulation theory (§3) in this article might suggest that the process of returning to baseline could feel like sleepiness https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10....

Which makes more sense if the sleep disorder explanation for ADHD means that the normal feeling of sleepiness is not properly functioning.

evanjrowley··on I spent a week without IPv4 (2023)
Over the past 10 years, the majority of "my internet stopped working" cases have been solved by disabling IPv6. In each case, it's AT&T who for some reason can't seem to operate it reliably.

My own home is Verizon, and they simply do not offer IPv6 in my area (nearby Washington DC).
