evanjrowley··on White House website mysteriously streams personal finance YouTube creator
Sometime around 2007, my late father was investigated by the US Secret Service for multiple reasons, including a "manifesto" that he somehow uploaded to the public directory on a White House web server.

A decade later, I was responsible for securing systems in the same type of environment. Various incidents demonstrated that these types of compromises are easier than you might imagine.

Infosec of US government networks changes less over the years than senior leadership would have you believe.

I was hoping for this feature after learning about Apple's Phone app for macOS. My first supposition was and Google equivalent would require a Chromebook and so it's a very pleasant surprise to see it available for web browsers.
evanjrowley··on A quarter of US-trained scientists eventually leave
>though the US share of global patent citations to graduates' science drops from 70% to 50% after migrating, it remains five times larger than the destination country share, and as large as all other countries combined.

Perhaps it is a good thing that innovation is not encumbered by patents as much in other countries as it has been in the US.

Can confirm! I'd also like to add that the employer is happy to keep you in that position for a decade or more (as long as the client keeps paying) but one job over an extended period of time reads very poorly on a resume. Switching is a disruption necessary for growth.

evanjrowley··on Intermittent hypoxia increases blood flow and benefits executive function
Yes!

Not to be confused with professional work where the only feasible way to complete the job is to spend hours wearing respirators clogged with particulate, having only one free hand to move heavy/bulky equipment through tight spaces, where getting a full breath of air is anatomically impossible. Extended periods of hypoxia are taxing on the body and require periods of recovery.

Maybe this is the link between sleep apnea and hypertension.
evanjrowley··on Western carmakers 'in fight for lives' against Chinese rivals, says Ford boss
Maybe do what Crucial did? Stop selling directly to consumers and only sell to businesses who 1) have a financial interest in consumers being unable to afford their own, and 2) are willing to pay $80k for a Ford Fiesta so consumers can rent small fractions of it. /s
evanjrowley··on Kenyans lured by lucrative job offers and sent to fight for Russia
The Ukranian SS division began voluntarily. Why would a forcibly drafted unit continue to be immortalized today by Ukraine's Azov? Look up Dmytro Paliiv and why a street there was named after him - as recently as 2017.

It seems the world is not as black-and-white as you want it to be. Sympathies should be shifted from irresponsible leaders and over to people who are trapped in this unfortunate war. Kenyans included.

evanjrowley··on Kenyans lured by lucrative job offers and sent to fight for Russia
Not sure about Estonian, but this is a discussion about the Russia-Ukraine war, so please stay focused.

The Ukrainian SS division got plenty of sympathy from non-USSR allies post-WW2. We can see their symbols proudly on display today in Ukraine's Azov brigade. Here you are displaying your sympathy for this legacy.

I recommend looking past the labels and extending sympathy to all humans trapped in this conflict.

evanjrowley··on US Congress passed bills to limit CCP influence in K-12 schools
Specifically in the case of elementary schools:

There are also signs of a new approach to influencing elementary and high schools: just buy them.

This is where the Spring Education Group, a for-profit company buying up private schools across the United States, comes into the picture. Primavera Holdings in Hong Kong owns the Spring Education Group and previously owned the Princeton Review and Tutor.com. Primavera also has associations with ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

Primavera Holdings made a rare appearance in the headlines when it purchased Tutor.com, which contracts with the U.S. military and many schools across the country to provide test prep and homework help.

In a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in 2024, Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) wrote, “While providing educational services, Tutor.com collects personal data on users, such as location, internet protocol addresses, and contents of the tutoring sessions. As Chinese national security laws require companies to release confidential business and customer data to the Chinese government, we are paying to expose our military and their children’s private information to the Chinese Communist Party.” Tutor.com denied that any students’ data would be shared with China, and today the Tutor.com website says that it is “U.S.-owned and operated” (How and if Primavera sold or divested from Tutor.com remains unclear).

evanjrowley··on IBM CEO says there is 'no way' spending on AI data centers will pay off
Is this true in 2025?

Asking because the biggest IT consulting branch of IBM, Global Technology Services (GTS), was spun off into Kyndryl back in 2021[0]. Same goes for some premier software products (including one I consulted for) back in 2019[1]. Anecdotal evidence suggests the consulting part of IBM was already significantly smaller than in the past.

It's worth noting that IBM may view these AI companies as competitors to it's Watson AI tech[2]. It already existed before the GPU crunch and hyperscaler boom - runs on proprietary IBM hardware.

also, British : a number equal to 1 followed by 54 zeros

evanjrowley··on Isn't WSL2 just a VM?
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualizat...

It relies upon SR-IOV and only several server-specific Nvidia GPUs are listed as supported.

Intel's Flex dGPUs and Arc iGPUs have supported SR-IOV for years now, but they aren't listed there. It would be super awesome if Microsoft could add it for Intel Arc iGPUs, desktop versions of Windows, and WSL2! Intel's GPU SR-IOV already works with KVM on Linux!
