evanjrowley··on Stop Making TUIs
I understand the point the article's making, and in fact, I believe it's a good one. Ultimately I continue to prefer TUIs over GUIs for one reason: Practically nobody will target TUIs for advertisements, doom scroll content, AI slop, any kind of marketing, etc.
evanjrowley··on A Kantian Critique of "Sorry" by Justin Bieber
Modern preferences have shifted away from manual ones to automatic ones.
evanjrowley··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Consequence of severe moral injury?
evanjrowley··on Treasury Orders Erasure of Domestic Ownership Records
I recall many small business owners panicking when this requirement seemed to sneak up on them.

Wasn't the purpose of it to aid in mitigating certain types of fraud, like with Covid-19 PPP loans and Medicare?

evanjrowley··on Unforgetful
That's really awesome and yes the background story really resonated with me. Right up until the end, I was thinking "hah, I can do this with Tasks.org on Android" but then the list of very cool ADHD-specific features changed my mind.
evanjrowley··on The Library of Ashurbanipal (2025)
I thought this name sounded familiar. Turns out it's similar to an NPC name in Morrowind (2002). Why aren't more video games drawing heavily from ancient history? https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Hanarai_Assutlanipal
evanjrowley··on We eliminated 1,400 CVEs in NanoClaw's container images
Discovered a new legit CVE today during a meeting with some other engineers. I’m going to make sure the one who originally brought it up gets to put it on his résumé. The world needs more people like that.
evanjrowley··on Move FreeBSD System Between ZFS Disks
The simplicity of FreeBSD really shines here. I recently performed the same task with Ubuntu 24.04. It seemed daunting due to various Linux-isms and Canonical’s anemic public documentation. Warp terminal got the job done. It blew through half a month’s tokens on the Build subscription tier. With FreeBSD, the task fits very nicely into just a short blog post.
evanjrowley··on We eliminated 1,400 CVEs in NanoClaw's container images
Why is the Node ecosystem like this? Why do people continue to choose it for popular projects vs. anything else?
evanjrowley··on Pixel Watch 5
As an owner of a Pixel Watch 4 with LTE, the killer feature is the ability to handle calls/texts without an actual phone. With a smart watch, I can maintain important communications without looking at a device with a screen large enough to show me an advertisement, large enough to be useful for doom-scrolling, large enough for consuming slop, etc.
evanjrowley··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Perhaps the problem you're describing is actually Google's bittersweet solution to the problem of not having unlimited storage space to properly index the whole internet.
evanjrowley··on Hardware backdoors in some x86 CPUs
Perfect. The next the the bank's ATM "cannot process the transaction" we now have a pathway to debug the issue.
evanjrowley··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
The benchmark performance tells me DeepSeek v4 Flash could be very cost-effective at playing SNES/Gameboy games.
evanjrowley··on Prime Agent: A self-improving RLM agent
The stuff 99% of agents are coded in? Please tell me this was sarcasm.
evanjrowley··on Rio-vt and librio: Rio's terminal engine, now embeddable
...although I must admit this seems like a good project that is helping lots of developers. Apologies for the knee-jerk reaction.

It's nice to see it running in novel places like the Steam Deck, Windows, and FreeBSD.

Are there any examples of the browser support advertised on the front page?

evanjrowley··on Flint 4 (GL-BE14000) Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Home Router: Available for Pre-Order
>Flint 4 will not be available in the U.S. during this pre-order phase due to recent FCC-related developments in the United States concerning networking products. For more details, please refer to our official statement: GL.iNet Statement on Recent FCC Regulatory Developments.

Rio is the terminal multiplexer in Plan 9
evanjrowley··on FIPS 140-3 is not a security guarantee, and auditors know it
Reminds me of a Thales rack mount HSM the former security architect of CVS Caremark told me they deployed back in the 2000s. There were two of them in a dataceter used for a their transaction processing. One day, someone accidentally bumped into the rack where both HSMs were mounted, and they physically self-destructed, causing a major incident.
evanjrowley··on FIPS 140-3 is not a security guarantee, and auditors know it
The practical benefit of FIPS 140 is less that your crypto is better and more that your systems will fail to establish connections with anything not using FIPS mode, thus reducing your threat exposure. A silver lining to the overall unfortunate situation that is the FIPS CMVP.

evanjrowley··on Show HN: Schmess – chess with no turns; pieces freeze on cooldown after moving
I wonder if adding a "dark souls" mode, where each move is delayed by a wind-up (or perhaps slow movement?), might result in more strategic gameplay approaches.
evanjrowley··on Show HN: Bor – Open-source policy management for Linux desktops
This is fantastic! I'd really love to see support for SCAP so it could be used to enforce DISA STIGs.
