eurleif··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
The responses most people are getting suggest that the LLM is failing to consider that to wash your car, it needs to come with you. But when I tried, it explicitly told me to "put it in neutral if safe, and gently roll it over while walking alongside". Pretty bizarre.
eurleif··on Reports of Telnet's death have been greatly exaggerated
Tangentially, I saw an ad the other day for software which purports to encrypt your keystrokes: https://www.keystrokelock.com/ I have no idea what that means.

eurleif··on Never Use Pixelation to Hide Sensitive Text (2014)
To be pedantic, `f(x) = 0` is a function of x.
eurleif··on Retreating from EVs could be hazardous for Western carmakers
When a hurricane impacted my area last year, I kept seeing Facebook posts for a week or two afterward from people asking where to find gas. Meanwhile, the power never went out, so my EV was able to charge without issue.
eurleif··on Waymo halts service during S.F. blackout after causing traffic jams
In practice, no one treats it as a four-way stop, which makes it dangerous to treat it as one.
eurleif··on Using TypeScript to obtain one of the rarest license plates
>EVENTVALIDATION is (was?) a novel security measure implemented in 2006 by the ASP.NET team to "prevents unauthorized requests sent by potentially malicious users from the client [..] to ensure that each and every postback and callback event originates from the expected user interface elements, the page adds an extra layer of validation on events".

The attack it prevents is called XSRF, and this security measure wasn't novel in 2006.

eurleif··on How elites could shape mass preferences as AI reduces persuasion costs
When I was visiting home last year, I noticed my mom would throw her dog's poop in random peoples' bushes after picking it up, instead of taking it with her in a bag. I told her she shouldn't do that, but she said she thought it was fine because people don't walk in bushes, and so they won't step in the poop. I did my best to explain to her that 1) kids play all kinds of places, including in bushes; 2) rain can spread it around into the rest of the person's yard; and 3) you need to respect other peoples' property even if you think it won't matter. She was unconvinced, but said she'd "think about my perspective" and "look it up" whether I was right.

A few days later, she told me: "I asked AI and you were right about the dog poop". Really bizarre to me. I gave her the reasoning for why it's a bad thing to do, but she wouldn't accept it until she heard it from this "moral authority".

eurleif··on Testing shows automotive glassbreakers can't break modern automotive glass
Expensive, and pretty bulky to carry around along with an impact driver. There are less expensive, more compact hand-operated tools, e.g.:

eurleif··on Why Strong Consistency?
The GP proposed that the definition should be changed. That in no way implies a lack of understanding of the present definition.
eurleif··on Over-regulation is doubling the cost
Do you have a link to an actual Kansas statute which makes it illegal to sell a used mattress? I searched for it without success. Various sites claim that Kansas makes this illegal without citing a statute (often in the context of hokey stories about people finding silly loopholes in this purported law), but I'm suspicious that it's an urban legend.

eurleif··on Do not put your site behind Cloudflare if you don't need to
Off-topic, but there are six different people using the word "hoster" in this thread. I've never heard that word used instead of "host" or "hosting service" before, and yet here it's somehow prevalent. I feel like I'm having a stroke, or I just stepped into an alternate universe. Where did you all pick up that word?
eurleif··on American Heart Association says melatonin may be linked to serious heart risks
>Benadryl/Unisom (it's the same drug either way)

Are you sure about this? Everything I can find says Benadryl is diphenhydramine, and Unisom is doxylamine. (Both linked to increased dementia risk, for what it's worth.)

eurleif··on Intent to Deprecate and Remove XSLT
The idiom "everything but the kitchen sink" (and variant "everything including the kitchen sink") doesn't refer to a sink filled with dirty dishes. Rather, the kitchen sink (originally the kitchen stove) is being used as an example of a particularly bulky item. "Everything but the kitchen sink" means, roughly, everything except for what would be too large and/or absurd to include.

eurleif··on I wish SSDs gave you CPU performance style metrics about their activity
SSDs (many of them at least) actually do make little noises when they're busy! I noticed my PC was making a noise, and I went on a wild goose chase trying to track it down. (Was something wrong with one of the fans? Was it coil whine from the GPU?) I didn't immediately suspect the SSD, because everyone claims they're silent. Then I finally realized the noise corresponded with disk activity, and I found a YouTube video confirming it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS-BHI667po
eurleif··on Palisades Fire suspect's ChatGPT history to be used as evidence

I'm on HW3, so FSD 12.x, but I've noticed this behavior as well. In my experience, it often (but not always) happens a fraction of a second before the light actually does turn green. I suspect the cause is that, instead of the neural network learning to treat the actual color of the light as the singular source of truth, it learned to also consider things that correlate with the color of the light, such as time since the light turned red, traffic in parallel lanes starting to move, and cross traffic stopping.
eurleif··on Employees must wash hands before returning to work
Amazon does, however, ship showerheads that come with an instruction sheet for how to remove the flow restrictor. (One must only do this to compensate for one's home having low water pressure, of course.)
