eulers_secret··on A framework for grading your performance on programming interview problems
> I don't feel in any way "inferior" to people with a degree.

I did the same thing, but I do feel inferior to degreed folks. Not skill-wise; I know people are all over the board with their skill level. It comes down to this statement: "I have two candidates who are equal in every way except candidate A never finished college. Candidate B gets hired!"

Going this route you have to be better than everyone else with a degree: If you're not, the person with the degree will win, every time. I did this with personal projects/passion/odd jobs, and now with a decade of work experience as an engineer.

Sometimes I want to finish my degree (I got an associates, so 1/2 way there!) but the ROI doesn't make sense with school being so expensive. My big fear is that I'll never get hired after this job because there are lots of qualified candidates who went to school, and I just don't stack up.

EDIT: It's also affected my willingness to change jobs, confidence in myself, and as a result my salary. I make $120K/yr in a high COLA. If you're reading this as a youngster: GO TO COLLEGE AND FINISH IT!

eulers_secret··on AMD Laptops finally reach the 4k screen barrier
I like the extra screen space 4K offers; but only on large screens. I run without any scaling (well, 100%), my editor offers 101 lines visible vertical and 470 columns. (each line is ~1/4" measured on a ruler; 27" screen 23" from my eyes)

I can view ~6 open files at once (more depending), and this can be very helpful when trying to remember context: instead of remembering, I just split the screen and open the same file again.

When I got a 4K monitor, it replaced my previous dual monitor setup. I now prefer just one high-res monitor. Only disadvantage is that I spend time tweaking font sizes, but that's mostly front-loaded and once it's set up (Linux) I don't even think about it.

eulers_secret··on Phrack Issue 70
I re-read that article just a couple weeks ago to help complete a work-related security challenge!

I also had to disable ASLR (echo 0|/proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space) and the executable was 32-bit. A lot has changed since those days :)

I feel the same way. Electrics are neat, though - especially if you make your own: https://cpldcpu.wordpress.com/2016/01/05/reverse-engineering...

But I just like the 'ambiance' too much. There are always different levels of risk adverseness: if I was considering candles a pollution health hazard I should also stop riding motorcycles, vaping various things, and stop eating like I do...

eulers_secret··on Apple places female engineering program manager on administrative leave
> "When closing sentences in presentations, you finish the sentence in a way that sounds like you're asking a question."

This is called 'uptalking'. The name may help folks who are trying to figure out if it's professional or not. I don't see any consensus so far. (but FWIW, I don't like it, myself)

eulers_secret··on Americans' life ratings reach record high
I skimmed the article, but I think this disconnect may be due to demographics.

Reddit skews very young, and I think things are harder for youth. The older generation has seen their housing values explode over the last decade, same with their retirement accounts. Many are “paper rich”.

Younger people aren’t established, they see high housing prices and feel the “American dream” was stolen from them. They see the current market values, and think they “missed out” on the rise. After all, will we see another decade of this kind of prosperity? Could be a kind of FOMO.

I do agree that stepping away from social media is important. Reddit has a lot of folks with a victim mentality (victims of “the system” - represented by capitalism), and that idea is easy to cultivate in oneself. It has a kernel of truth, but I think people ruminate and it doesn’t do any good.

eulers_secret··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
I haven't seen anyone mention this issue for some reason, but in fetch_tweets.py:

  fetch_tweets_from_user(user_name):
      ...
      tweets = api.user_timeline(screen_name=user, count=200, include_rts=False)
'user' isn't defined, should be user_name, right? Side note, 'copilot' is a decent name for this (though copilots are usually very competent, moreso than this right now). You must check the suggestions carefully. Maybe it'll make folks better at code review, lol.
eulers_secret··on Heat dome causing record breaking heat wave
For future reference, check out weather.gov and read the forecast discussion - it's written by your local meteorologist and is THICK with jargon and interesting stuff to google. It's sort of the 'root' for weather information and you pay for it anyways through taxes. It's great.

Portland, OR example: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=PQR&issuedby=P...

EDIT: Look through the history to get their perspective on what happened - just click "previous version" to go back in time!

eulers_secret··on FAA releases TRUST: Free online training required to fly drones recreationally
You do know you don't own the airspace over your house, right? The drone operator is operating within the law and you do not have a right to talk to them.

I'd stop flying over your place, but I have friends who would laugh and tell you to pound sand - then they'd fly over your place a few more times for fun.

Remote ID won't solve this either, it doesn't apply to drones <250g. You're going to have to just deal with it.

eulers_secret··on U.S. senators propose 25% tax credit for semiconductor manufacturing

eulers_secret··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
I know this is 9 hours old, but this is 100% not for me.

I want to leave items in my car for tomorrow: my face mask, (previously) CDs and tapes, etc.

I want to spend the extra money for 'grippy' tires on my car, or do other mods like use sticky notes on the dash. I want my seat to be in the same position I left it in: It can take a day or two to get it just right. I want to have the option to use a seat cover for comfort.

I want to eat my lunch in my car: I control the climate, I control the music, and I can vape or smoke to my hearts content. It's mine to do that with.

I want to put off unloading my vehicle after a long and arduous camping trip, It's already 8PM when I get home. It can wait for tomorrow, and doesn't cost me anything.

I want to let my muddy dog jump into the back seats, I don't care if they get 'ruined', that's my choice about my property. I don't want a cleaning fee.

Lastly, I want to know for sure my dog won't eat the used condom the last person left under the seat. People are animals, no amount of cleaning between uses can ensure cleanliness 100% of the time. But I can in my car.

There's at least 2 other options: Disable (physically) modems/antennas of sidewalk-enabled devices you own, or do not purchase devices that are sidewalk-enabled.

Sidewalk uses LoRa and a 900Mhz other signal (for garage door openers). With an SDR that can use that spectrum, you could probably determine if there are sidewalk endpoints around. Might be able to foxhunt them to certain houses.

My plan is to do my best to avoid these devices (FCC IDs may be helpful here), and if I can't, then physically disable them from being able to communicate. Hopefully other folks do the same, and there will be information/a community online to help.

The rest of the world is up a creek, only the 'techno-elite' have the privilege of privacy and being tracking-free. It probably doesn't amount to much, though...

eulers_secret··on Hyundai Nexo sets new world record 887.5 km travelled on single tank of hydrogen
You can use hydrogen in a modified combustion engine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_internal_combustion_e...

Doesn't look like a great path forward - deep internal engine parts need to be modified (no "hydrogen kit" for existing cars), they emit NOx emissions (so not zero-emission), and you have all the disadvantages of a combustion engine.

However, combustion engines have 100 years of development behind them and a proven track record of reliability (probably billions of running hours by now). Fuel cells are still newish - "the devil you know". This would also keep mechanics employed and keep dealership service bays busy... kind of a perverse incentive, but it's there for sure.

It may be a stop-gap, or useful for certain situations (long haul trucking is mentioned). It could be part of the tapestry of technologies needed to move to a more renewable-based future.

eulers_secret··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
This is where I’m stuck: how do we know which patterns are possibilities? I’ve never seen a “patterns for leet code” website, yet.

Further, how does a naive person know which pattern applies to a problem? Without that knowledge, how can I vet a learning resource and know I’m not wasting my time?

eulers_secret··on Explaining 4K 60Hz Video Through USB-C Hub (2019)
Thanks for the recommendation, I've been seriously considering one of these for my XPS.

As a side note I am deeply in love with my XPS 9310 (Tigerlake) on Kubuntu (kernel 4.11). Battery life is INSANE, instant wake and sleep, keeps cool, but still has thermal overhead/power (thanks to the fans) to do large kernel compiles or other serious hard work. Also the screen (I got the non-4K model) is very pretty, sometimes I just look at it and go 'wow, that looks good'. Excuse me if I gush too much.

eulers_secret··on Mozilla plans to remove the Compact Density option from Firefox's Customize menu
> Why bother using FF at this point?

Lots of reasons: familiarity, it works for your use cases, preventing a Chrome hegemony (though we're already there), their focus on privacy, important add-ons still work great. The fact FF isn't owned by an ad-run business who's main concern is figuring out a more effective way to make you buy stuff.

> Most sites don't work as well

Citation definitely needed. This is worded without precision, you could claim "work as well" to mean nearly anything. Do you have specifics, with data? Performance? Functionality? Features? DRM? What is it? I haven't encountered any broken web sites with desktop Firefox. But, I also don't look at all the internet, so I'm curious - what's broken?

What alternatives are there? Chrome is a no-go, Brave is off doing it's URL redirect and bitcoin weirdness (that I don't need in a browser) Edge is just Chrome. There's some de-googled Chrome options and I guess some weird special-build Firefox options, but really, out of all the options I see, FF is best for me.

I'm not changing because they removed one tiny feature used by a very vocal minority, and it's a mistake to assume that FF has no value or no "sell".

eulers_secret··on Is Being Salaried a Scam?
Agreed, putting all your eggs in one basket like this is just gambling. This person got lucky, but make no mistake anyone else reading this: IT IS STUPID AND YOU WILL PROBABLY LOSE. MOST DO.

If you want to do something with your $100K, use it as a house down-payment or consider mutual funds. Or just yeet it into GME, I'm not a financial advisor.

eulers_secret··on Ubuntu Makes Flutter ‘Default Choice’ for Future Desktop Apps
Time for me to move away from Ubuntu, then. This and apt randomly installing snaps isn’t what I want. I’ll give Arch a shot, it’s been the new hotness for a long time...
eulers_secret··on Flutter 2
I do think it's the norm, and very much dislike this trend.

I should make my position more clear: I hate this stuff with a passion. But, big business wants better content protection, and big money always gets what it wants - very few exceptions there. I wish we could do something as technologists who want to keep these features of the web; but against trillion dollar companies I know who I'd bet for...

eulers_secret··on Flutter 2
> you cannot copy the text anymore.

Isn't this a feature? Having text easy to copy and paste is a copyright problem for many sites. Same with being able to save full-resolution images. It's pretty common to see a copy/paste in forum comments to get around a paywall.

IMO either this or some other webassembly view is the future, simply because it's great DRM. Sure, you can circumvent it, but most people cannot.

eulers_secret··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
I'm curious as well.

I've seen lots of folks talking about pipewire, but I'm a simple audio user - I want software mixing and audio out via a headphone jack and that's all.

I'm pretty sure for most folks we'll just wait until our distro decides to move over, it'll happen in the background, and we'll not notice or care.

eulers_secret··on The Evolution of Developer Salaries: Looking Back 20 Years
That's interesting! I actually grew up in single-parent household, have never lived in a house, and certainly have heard my neighbors children. Not urban, but suburban apartments. I guess I buck the trend (or maybe I'm reaching too high :-P )

I've even thought that, after infancy, apartment living is potentially BETTER for kids. Reasoning that there are more nearby friends and usually a playground or field to play in. I certainly had lots of fun with the neighborhood kids in the pool/large field/playground on the apartment grounds when I was young.

But, kids are noisy during quiet hours (before you can reasonably control them). I remember it being hard on my mom when my brother was young. Always 1/2 a step from eviction for noise complaints. I felt the stress as a child, I cannot imagine how hard it was on her. I don't want to do that...

eulers_secret··on The Evolution of Developer Salaries: Looking Back 20 Years
Same place right here.

I've been living WAY WAY below my means. I drive a 15 year old car, I live in a 1br apt (wife and I, 650 sqft). I've also been pushing forward in my career with as much zeal as I can muster. I'm also putting my wife through grad school (though she'll never make much, English degree - I'm just glad I can enable her to chase her passions) I don't have high other bills, currently have an iPhone 7 and don't plan to upgrade, my PC is 8 years old, etc.

I've managed to just this year save up the down payment for houses in my area... but it's kinda dumb, because I really can't afford a house (mortgage/higher utilities/repairs/etc). So I'm in limbo: I have a LOT of cash saved, that should be invested (especially now), but I might buy a house in 5 years so I keep it liquid.

I also want to say that I tied home ownership (or at least living in a house) to having children - I don't want the stress of bothering my neighbors on top of child stress. So I haven't started a family, and I don't see a path to starting one. I think I have been priced out of having a family and it makes me so so sad.

At least I'm a dev, my non-dev friends may as well not even bother getting up in the morning. They will never, ever, ever gain enough capital to be a owner. If their parents are broke, they'll die having only lived in apartments. This also makes me very sad.

I don't see prices going down. I guess I could move, and I am kind of planning a remote/low cost play after COVID is over and I can get an understanding of how stable remote work is. I'd hate to be stuck in the boonies of South Dakota looking for a dev job because things "went back to normal". Holding pattern forever.

eulers_secret··on AMC, GameStop Give Hedge Fund Mudrick Capital $200M in Gains
$400K is 1/2 the average cost of a house in Seattle. I'd suggest there's an argument that if you can't own (no mortgage) a house in your area, you're still 'poor'.

Still not a great move to dump your entire worth into meme stocks.

eulers_secret··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
Here's an article I read the other day on this: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amazon-just-anything-except-g...

My favorite quotation: (context: Frazzini is director-lvl) "[...]the team cringed as Frazzini struggled to differentiate between hyper-polished conceptual footage and live gameplay[...]". I am awe-struck, my only response is: LOL

My second favorite tidbit was about their game "New World", in which players "colonize a mythical land and murder inhabitants who bear a striking resemblance to Native Americans". Then refused to believe their employees who said this was racist and offensive. Until they hired a tribal consultant who, indeed, found it offensive.

There's other good things in there as well - not listening to other employees, hiring and then wasting talent, chasing trends, not understanding the industry, not scoping correctly (lumberjack). Even AMZN's culture was restrictive and harmful (IMO especially "leaders are right a lot" lmao, not at all in this case!).

Could you imagine working in an industry for a decade, and then being in this position? Where your boss literally cannot differentiate between a rendered video and a pre-release video game - but the culture has an in-built "you're probably wrong, peon" attitude? I'd leave so fast I'd probably forget my desk plants!

eulers_secret··on Ford, Google form 'strategic partnership' on cloud services, Android
Older cars can sometimes accept upgraded radios with carplay/android auto.

My '07 got a Sony head unit that does both, along with a nice 6.95" capacitive touch display for ~$400. It was worth every penny when I was commuting. You're missing convenience: Siri is nice, maps on the screen are nice, sharing the screen with passengers, quickly choosing a song without risking a cellphone use ticket (at a stop).
