If not, is there a FOSS implementation of these required new devices? Maybe an emulator for one?
Can I download an manage my own keys, manually?
Can I self-host the authentication layers so I don’t need to use a 3rd party?

Worked at Intel for > 10 years; currently doing embedded Linux for avionics and working toward a pilot's license.
I really love Linux.

Moving is an option (my partner has restrictions: No states with anti-abortion laws, which removes many inexpensive places), if I go remote. Seems like every other dev has the same idea and that's helping drive prices up everywhere - along with other factors, of course.
I kinda gave up on that dream, being priced out. So I quit, either to make a TC which can afford that life (>$200K/yr) or to live the rest of my days in a hedonistic manner. Current plan is to grind leetcode/sys design and apply to high-TC companies over and over until I can afford the life I want, or die trying.
For me, they don’t crack right out of the fridge!
Besides, this is a false dichotomy- chrome books are very cheap, but come with years of updates. Move them to Linux and it’s decades of updates.
Hmmm, I wonder why I'm so cynical? Why do I assume bad faith so often? I wonder??? Guess it's a mystery.
The website has a reference for where they get their big mac prices:
> Big Mac Index measures the average price of a Big Mac at McDonald's in the United States and is famously used in the Economist's Big Mac Index to measure inflation.
And a link to the Economist article (https://www.economist.com/big-mac-index) where they further link to their methodology: https://github.com/TheEconomist/big-mac-data
The USA average seemed high to me, and I found this resource: https://www.zippia.com/advice/how-much-big-mac-costs-states/ - Nov 2021 - which suggests $4.40. But the Economists data/csv file really does say $5.81 for the USA... so that's where I bow out!
I very often use num lock and caps lock responsiveness to check if my PC has hard-locked, and I just recently suffered hard locks while testing S3 on Linux on a new PC. So I am very sure at this point :)
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but my reason is that I do not enjoy working on/with ML. I'd personally rather quit the industry.
But I work in embedded/driver development. I do not worry about ML models replacing me yet, but if I were just gluing together API calls I would be a bit worried and try to specialize.
Fortunately my place is so small a 100’ cat-5 cable reaches any point in it, so I just use wired. Wifi barely works.
Considering wifi-6, but I can’t figure out if it helps with this type of congestion or not…
I went with Apple TV + Plex (along with D+/NFLX/Peacock/HBO Max/Hulu/AppleTV/Prime/Cable... but I still can't find everything I want)
That’s not true for everyone. I’ve been a dev for 20 years and have never done any of those, and I have no desire to at all. That is ok! Programming isn’t some kind of progression to run from “n00b hello world” to “1337 compiler hax0r”, it’s a tool to solve problems with. Many of us will never have to solve these problems or have no interest in these problems.
So, if you’re like me, don’t worry because you’ve never made a brainfuck interpreter or a database engine. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad dev. You can have a successful career without building these! And if you need them some time, learn them at that time… you may not ever need to.
You don’t get flipped off by Linus T for having good drivers. You also don’t have to wait years for wayland to work if your driver is good.
Like all economic systems, a strong and independent state/gov't is required to force-fix issues that don't make financial sense to fix (ex. FDA creation after The Jungle). I think our current system is suffering from regulatory capture, and I don't see a way to resolve this kind of near-corruption. Corporatism will continue until the system is no longer sustainable, which likely will never happen (within our lifetimes).
2021 was a bad year for me. My stocks didn't increase in value at all (bluechip tech), my house down-payment cash savings decreased in value by 20% (~$20K value just GONE in one year: That's two years of savings for me), my 15 year old car is too expensive to replace right now, and it's leaky/moldy. I've also been locked down in my comically small apartment for YEARS.
This upcoming year I am 100% NOT going to 'address troubling issues' or anything like it. I've fallen lower on Maslow's hierarchy than I have been since before I started my career. I'm going to try to increase my comp, and get into the "good side". People are making serious money during this pandemic, and I'm so jealous that I missed the boat. I could really use some gains to offset the absurd increase in housing/transportation costs, but it appears there's no relief on the horizon for me.
Google is highly profitable, take the subscription fee and donate it to someone who will help people instead of just develop more sophisticated ads and ways to remove blocking from browsers…
I'm concerned these features in specific may be used by abusive spouses to track and control their partners (or extract revenge upon them). It's honestly pretty grim when you can't even use the "shared" (abuser likely would be the sole 'owner' on the title) vehicles to escape an abusive situation. Any upside of this kind of feature is very must overshadowed by the abuses enabled.
Additionally, I'm sad that if I do something stupid in a parking lot (say I fall and hurt myself) that the video can be recorded by any number of vehicles and posted to facebook/youtube/etc for yucks. Nothing can be done about it, there's no way to stop it. I hate it, though, and I hate that people are excited for these terrible slipshod "features" that won't help them as much as they hurt others.
I’ve also used Anki to learn some plants and insects.
Also, if you Reddit, subscribe to r/whatisthisbird (along with whatisthisbug and r/birding), and every day you’ll learn birds and bugs. I also do this with artwork as my random desktop background. I see it every day, so I can now recognize some paintings. I put no effort into learning, they’re just there and I pick it up passively! Should work with pics of birds.
Org-capture, tramp mode, ansi-term. Tight integration with any workflow. Flycheck, flyspell, it’s all so good.
Much love for emacs. I would refuse to work where I can’t use it. Steep learning curve, but the view is beautiful after the climb.
I don't know why some people consider themselves "owners" of assets the bank actually owns, but it's normal in the USA.
I even got syntax highlighting for patches and wrote some lisp to link up notmuch search results to gnus- so I can search for an e-mail and find the whole thread easily.
Of course, I could have just started evolution and been done, but this stuff is fun!

The only path I see going forward is waiting until climate change related disasters are extremely bad (loss of life on par or worse than COVID-19 in US/EU, every year, for probably a decade); then we will see massive government investment into carbon capture/sequestration (probably run by the oil/gas giants who caused this). This is what the world looks like in an age of regulatory capture.
According to transistor density information this is false (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5_nm_process)
TSMC 5nm density: 173 MTr/mm^2
Samsung 5nm density: 127 MTr/mm^2
Intel 4 (estimated): ~200 MTr/mm^2
Got a source? I'm willing to change my mind, but the data doesn't agree with your assertion from my point of view.
Samsung's process has always lagged TSMC and INTC. It's part of why the 3080 is so hot/power hungry.
Have to see if they can not only catch up, but keep up.
