euccastro··on Greece draws up drachma plans, prepares to miss IMF payment
Nothing was "discovered"; the rest of the Eurozone knew it all along that Greek figures were fantasy since the very moment they entered the EU.

I got my eval board one year ago. I'm sure if they had closed shop they'd have put a warning on their site, but you can always email them to make sure.

That is, post-WW2 Italy, post-civil war Spain. People were migrating in droves from Italy and Spain to e.g. Argentina in those years.

euccastro··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds
There are established deadlines for submitting orders. When someone misses it, one of the following things happens (which one happens is agreed upon before the game starts):

- units for which orders haven't been submitted just hold still, or

- whenever anyone's orders are missing after the deadline, the game gets paused and there is an open call for replacement players in a mailing list.

euccastro··on Google & Stanford create a digital brain that learns to identify a human face
What ever pattern is responsible for doing something in a network, the same function can be described much more simply by an algorithm.

Yes, but for that you'd have to find the algorithm, which takes lots of human resources. That's what unsupervised learning saves you. In several specialized fields like computer vision and aural interpretation, a generic neural network trained for hours can outperform algorithms that took decades of research to refine.

"It saddens me no end to see it and to see very intelligent people talk conspiracy theories and spew idiotic economic theories that the rest of the world got rid of decades ago."

How's that working for the rest of the world?

If you have the time, some food for thought. This is a Greek documentary on the Argentinian crisis and recovery:

euccastro··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
I mean why would you want to allow both list and tuple syntax for exactly the same semantics, when either of them would be enough.
euccastro··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
I think only familiarity with Javascript makes that "nice". One could argue that this

(lambda i: i%2 == 0).filter((lambda i: i/2).map(nums))

makes (marginally) more sense. But I like filter and lambda alright as they are. I agree Python's inconsistency in this is a bit unfortunate, but I haven't had much of a problem with the runtime errors you mention.

euccastro··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
I had to check that on the REPL. I'm surprised that even works and I can't think of a good reason why should list syntax be allowed as a lvalue, in addition to tuple syntax.
euccastro··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
There is a builtin function called `reversed`. You'd better remember that than the "useful" [::-1] idiom.

The recommendation on `iteritems` had better be generalized to include `iterkeys`, `itervalues`, and other opportunities for using iterators rather than building lists. A note that the 'iter...' versions are removed in Python 3 (because iterator behaviour becomes the default) would be appropriate here.

In relation to collections, itertools is a great module to get familiarized with. I import * from this module. I consider functions there as if they were builtins.

"Conditional assignment" is a weak and misleading name. "Conditional expressions" is more descriptive. There is no assignment in

print "yes" if some_condition else "no"
as the article acknowledges later.

Using Ellipsis for getting all items is a violation of the Only One Way To Do It principle. The standard notation is [:].

I commend the good intentions of the writer, but I'm surprised that this article got 144 upvotes in HN.

euccastro··on Hacker School: Summer 2012 Applications Open + Etsy Scholarships
I object to a 'top female programmer' award not because of the lack of symmetry, but because it reeks of condescension.

These scholarships don't give an artificial pat-in-the-back to anyone. Women are helped in aspects unrelated to those in which applicants are evaluated.

In any event, I'm interested in hearing about the alternatives you, and the females you've spoken with, propose.

euccastro··on Etsy Hacker Grants: Supporting Women in Technology
Getting more women into tech isn't just about the money...*

I don't suppose you're implying the OP means otherwise?

euccastro··on Etsy Hacker Grants: Supporting Women in Technology
> I dislike the implicit message being sent by offering money specifically to women to go into engineering/computer science.

[Disclaimer: I'm attending the current batch of Hacker School and was mad impressed at Etsy's facilities in a recent visit.]

I don't think Etsy is offering women money to attract them into the field, if that's what you mean. As I understand it, the proximate purpose of the money is to enable those women that are otherwise interested in the Hacker School proposition. Supporting oneself in an expensive city like NY for three months is a nontrivial handicap.

The gesture delivers the message that women are appreciated, at least in this particular environment. This may be the right kind of nudge.

In more prosaic terms, because of the newsworthiness of this initiative more women will learn of this opportunity.

It doesn't make sense to me to think of that as a 'bonus'. Who wants to hire anyone that would base their career choice on a $5K bribe?

If your country of citizenship is eligible for the Visa Waiver Program [1] you just need to fill a form [2] online, declaring you're not a terrorist, drug dealer, child abuser/abductor, etc. [3]

It is probably a good idea to get some health insurance for your whole stay, unless your country has some kind of arrangement with the U.S. to this effect (and I don't know if any country does). You can get insurance from your travel agency or separately online. Check the terms of your home insurance or credit card, if any. Some include some sort of travel insurance.
