Yes, easily.

Ignoring the last point, this is probably why the HTML5BP loads from the CDN but fallsback to a local version if the CDN can't be reached.

Which product has been simplified? Presumably not a pencil :P

estel··on Show HN: Gitter – Chat for GitHub
I think the "Sign up" copy on the button might be a bit misleading, because as a user I'm not really signing up for anything...
estel··on Why Japanese Web Design Is So Different
I'm not quite sure it's quite the same as saying that Western designers have "mastered" the web, but my memories of Japanese websites from ten years ago are remarkably similar to how they look today. It seems more relevant that web design in the East hasn't evolved or changed over that period, when western design has.
estel··on Mailchimp's pricing
Sure, but the intervals are still bizarre.
estel··on Android Bootstrap
On the other hand, big apps with their own style probably have already chosen to not look like Bootstrap.
estel··on Google Security Team Member on NSA: "Fuck These Guys"
Yes, according to the Washington Post, the interception took place in the UK.
estel··on Nexus 5 Teardown
Yes, you can definitely still disable apps in order to hide them. (Though this isn't as flexible, especially when one app owns multiple Launcher icons such as the Google Settings one).
estel··on In Almost Every European Country, Bikes Are Outselling New Cars
I assume this is why the data they link to for US bike sales breaks down bikes with wheels > 20".
estel··on Windows 8.1 now available
The utility of the windows 8 full screen apps has improved quite a bit now that you can partition a large screen pretty freely with three or four of them. Even before then, I quite enjoyed using a few W8 apps because they could be laid out independently of the desktop, allowing Aero-snap to work more efficiently on the more transient windows.

(These would usually be chat apps that I'd keep open in a panel).

estel··on Windows 8.1 now available
Woah, as you've said elsewhere there are plenty of people who do disagree about the utility of the start screen for use with kb+mouse. Personally I've found it just as, and indeed more, efficient than the start menu.
estel··on Windows 8.1 now available
I'm slightly sad about the return of the start button too, I'd have been happy with an option to disable it.
estel··on Windows 8.1 now available
I'm just doing the upgrade at the moment: the download was 3.4GB and was maxing my connection, but the install has taken an hour so far, but this isn't on an SSD. The process looks like it's coming to an end soon.

estel··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
It's a pretty open secret, but not really.
estel··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
Not a chance.
estel··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
Authenticating the provenance of Banksy stuff has always been a tough ask. The only way to definitively verify if streetart is genuine is to wait for it appear on his website, but for prints/canvases etc. he runs his own verification service [0].

estel··on Opt out of Google using you as an ad
It's not a recommendation to the general public: your existing +1s, reviews and comments were already shared with whatever circles you'd already opted to share them with; this option just has those recommendations appear next to adverts for /only/ those same people.
estel··on Opt out of Google using you as an ad
Why would a rating or review of a place be out of context on an ad for it?
estel··on Google can use your name and photo alongside online ads
TLA and Google's terms and supplementaries [0] seem pretty explicit: "Whenever you comment on, follow or +1 a page while logged in with your Google account" "This only happens when you take an action (things like +1’ing, commenting or following) – and the only people who see it are the people you’ve chosen to share that content with".

Nothing is being made visible that wasn't previously visible, it's just that content is now appearing alongside other stuff.

estel··on Important Customer Security Announcement
> Now, suddenly, Volkswagen/Ford/Chevy decide that one time payments suck and you need to pay monthly, say $1000.

Adobe would say that it might be more comparable to your car manufacturer upgrading your car every time they released a new model.

> His current car's value reduces drastically because of this monthly scheme.

The value of what his current car has reduced because they released a new model, not because of the new scheme (and CS6 hasn't depreciated in price that much!)

> And to access any sort of updates to his car, he needs to pay monthly, and this monthly payment includes a penalty as well, if you decide to cancel sometime in between.

Just like every other 12 month contract ever? It's pretty clearly labelled that it's an annual contract, and that there are recurring monthly contracts available for a higher cost.

> Now these manufacturers tell you that you can still buy an older model from their store and make it extremely difficult and dodgy to buy one.

As MarkMc said, it's not especially hard to buy CS6. All the top search results for "buy cs6" allow me to buy it pretty immediately.

Sure, they definitely upsell CC, but they also see that as their new and better product: is it really dishonest or nasty of them to do so?

estel··on Important Customer Security Announcement
> there is no easy way to subscribe to CC for just a few months

Isn't that what the monthly plan does [0]? $75 / month rather than $50, but with the option to only pay for individual months. I think they said they were originally thinking of freelancers who might only take on work that involved using CC a few times a year.

estel··on Why can a scam company raise $40 Million Series C + $76 Million Series B?
For what it's worth, eHow only really moved towards being a content farm after being sold to Demand Media. I don't think it's fair to compare legalised gambling with human trafficking...
estel··on SteamOS
It doesn't seem crazy that their target demographic might be people who'd otherwise buy a PS4 or Xbox; and they don't necessarily have a beefy gaming machine.
estel··on SteamOS
The streaming works if you have a beefy Windows machine in your house already, it's not a solution for people wanting a dedicated "Steam" console.
