ericwan··on Smart-people traps
agree that pawer balance != somebody get fucked over for instance America is a benign hegemony. Though they still fuck over people at times, they did it much less than, say, UK, or Rome, etc.

but a counter-point - having a market means people with more money fuck over people with no money.

ericwan··on Smart-people traps
i don't acting like being fucked over means not doing anything. To me it means fight back (or, well, fuck over back).
ericwan··on Ask HN: Why don't more web developers found startups?
do it part-time or something. delicious started that way.
ericwan··on Smart-people traps
>> people realize how much the power elite is fucking them over.

isn't that true though?

ericwan··on Smart-people traps
And when you start creating your own thing, you realize how hard it is to build and you criticize less
ericwan··on Smart-people traps
thank you. this is an awesome post, and makes me recall how many times i've fallen into these traps. I've always wanted to be in politics and finance, and thought that's the best way to maximize my potential. Then i find out politics/finance is more about rent-seeking than doing good. I spent most of my college life just to figure it out. And then I find the start up life, which is really the thing - I got out of the traps. =)
ericwan··on 6 Y Combinator Startups I Would Have Invested In Back Then
neither of you guys mentioned loopt, but it is supposed to be one of the startups that PG has the most expectation. do you guys think it won't succeed, or what is it?

personally, I don't get it either.

ericwan··on Google To Launch Venture Fund
I'm pretty sure MSFT has a venture wing. So is Intel
ericwan··on Google To Launch Venture Fund
the title is very link-baitish
ericwan··on Ask YC: How to prepare for interviews?
get enough sleep, a while ago i went to a google interview after an all-nighter. it felt like 100-hour long. read more about data structures and algorithms, and make you can explain it in laymen terms.

I'm not sure how Kiko compared to the first 5~10 big failures that burnt 100mil + dollars. Kiko is a well-justified experiment on couple hundred grands.
ericwan··on What Makes Finnish Kids So Smart?
agree except the sports part.

most of the discussion are of low quality and can be done with a smarter audience on HN or some other newsgroups.

But sports teams are good. it really encourages self-discipline, work ethics, and a competitive spirit.

ericwan··on The Smartest Advice I Ever Got: Personal Finance
well there's an exception:give up freedom at present for money, and use the money to buy even more freedom in future
ericwan··on Ask YC: Feedback on my Startup please!
Thank you for the feedback!

Just added you on AIM: qcericwan about the email.

Corp email and LinkedIn account: Yes it's on the roadmap but we haven't added it yet. Thanks for telling me.

number of reviews for a company: that too, but I would like to have more reviews before I add that information to the site.

Just added the stars too. =)

ericwan··on Ask YC: Feedback on my Startup please!
(1) If I really got sued we're be fairly big. I mean companies would only sue me if I have money to pay. Viacom wouldn't sue Youtube if Youtube wasn't acquired by Google. Who doesn't want to be Youtube? =)

(2) I haven't paid much attention to business model yet, think I'd get more users and figure out. But I am planning to have a targeted, contextual advertising model -- e.g. putting job ads of google in a google review page. =)

ericwan··on Ask YC: Feedback on my Startup please!
Currently there're no ads on the site =) We think it's more important to attract users/content before we put on any ads or other revenue stream.
ericwan··on Ask YC: Feedback on my Startup please!
We're focusing on more general, soft issues such as the boss, coworkers, training, etc. On that respect we're more focused on glassdoor.com than coderific.com. Meanwhile now we're focusing just on the tech industry.

Later down the road we're gonna differentiate from both of the companies, in that we're gonna build more social features. Encourage people to participate even though they're not currently looking for a job.

ericwan··on Are Prestigious Educations Killing Venture Capital?
Lots of the entrepreneurs we know are from these schools, and that's evidence to prove against the article's theory. I think it really depends on the personality and background of the person. People who stand out in the top schools are really ridiculously smart and good.
ericwan··on Ask YC: When can we expect to know our YC application status?
Thanks for reminding me. I don't even remember that they will give out the interviews today. Take it easy.
ericwan··on What are the most frequently asked questions by a VC?
How will you make money?
ericwan··on Incenting The User To Put Up A Profile Picture
Someone may still like a monkey, but no one would like Cheney.
ericwan··on Xobni man: Getting deals done
That was Yale.
ericwan··on Xobni man: Getting deals done
I heard that Roleof Botha of Sequoia is also a straight-forward, respectable person.

You can also check out The Funded (www.thefunded.com) for more info.

ericwan··on Great leaders are great followers.
Steve Jobs doesn't seem to be a great follower
ericwan··on Ask YC: Best undergraduate college for hopeful startup entrepeneurs
Ballmer is not an entrepreneur. He was an employee and never founded a startup.
ericwan··on Ask YC: Best undergraduate college for hopeful startup entrepeneurs
EE is also a good choice.
ericwan··on Non-US Visa Applicants to the US - Don't You Think It's Time We Compared Notes?
How did the buxfers stay in the US before they got their H1Bs?
ericwan··on Knowledge is power, 30 books every young entrepreneur should read
I'd read a subset of the list (say 5-8), and try building a startup. After all, you learn the lessons so much better if you learn it from doing. The 5-8 books give you an idea of what lies ahead.

wow another guy making the same guess! The world is small indeed. =)

I saw your redesign of Jawed's homepage, and I got forwarded by Jawed to this Stanford MBA...=) I didn't get back to him as I think as a hiring email they should at least tell me briefly about their idea instead of just throwing the big names.
