erichurkman··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
My fond memory of CoffeeScript was an interview I did way back when at Olark. It was a full day 'paid work along' interview that was popular at the time. I'd never touched CoffeeScript prior. In less than the day, I was proficient enough even navigating a foreign code base to build out a small feature within the Olark platform. (I think it was managing chat operators as groups?)

Fond memories!

erichurkman··on Security Flaws in Adobe Acrobat Reader Allow Gaining Root on macOS Silently
That doesn't work for sites that then process filled PDF forms, unfortunately. And it incredibly time consuming for some forms that have dozens or more of checkboxes and fields to fill in.
erichurkman··on Security Flaws in Adobe Acrobat Reader Allow Gaining Root on macOS Silently
I still routinely encounter fillable forms that Preview.app can't handle, particularly with checkboxes or large text areas. It also frequently uses the wrong font in PDF forms meaning text doesn't fit in the prescribed form fields.

erichurkman··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
I don't use a wiki but instead use Bear (https://bear.app) which gives cross-referential tags and a slick sorted tree of tags. I tag every article ('note') with a set of tags at the top.

#d/2020/05/08 #fam/sis #fam/gifts — notes around a conversation I had with my sister today about potential gifts .

#d/2020/05/05 #recipes/dinner #recipes/c/italian — notes a ravioli recipe I made on 5/5. If I later make it for a group dinner, I'll tag it, too, so I can track when I made things for who and collect longitudinal feedback and recipe changes.

#todo/today is things that need to get done today; things that don't will get moved to other notes.

erichurkman··on How to correct a team member: avoid my damaging rookie mistakes
Add to that that praise is often more effective than correction, particularly for more junior folks.

If I can praise and lift up 95% of what someone is doing, they will do more of that, and less of the 5% that I'd otherwise like to see be done better — unless that 5% has a disproportionate amount of damage to the organization.

erichurkman··on FCC must reveal IP addresses and user-agent headers of net neutrality commenters
And when the Government is on the other side with requests, warrants, and subpoenas, they aggressively push with little regard to cost, complexity, or even feasibility.

If we replied to a lawful order with "This demands 'research' instead of simply a 'search'," they would tell us tough-shit.

erichurkman··on WeWork sells Meetup
There's a small cottage industry of purchasers who will buy heavily depressed for chump change. It can be strategic to help offset other gains in a tax year.

The purchaser collects a service fee and a lottery ticket for the random "XYZ Inc sold patent to IBM for $10 million during company liquidation."

erichurkman··on SoftBank Backs Away from Part of Planned WeWork Bailout
Plenty of WeWork employees are on HN (or former employees, or those that exercised stock options or through WeWork's many acquisitions), plus there are a lot of folks that use WeWork's spaces here.

erichurkman··on Robinhood goes down again, during another historic trading day
The RH app is nicer for simple trades. From open, authentication, to trade can be just a few seconds. Fidelity app feels very heavy opening just to get to a trade prompt.
erichurkman··on Updating Dictionary in Python 3.9
I tried to read this. I love Python, and am thrilled to see the language evolve.

This page has a massive sidebar, another massive sidebar that scrolls with the content, and another sidebar. The content for my screen had about 1" width to read.

The various sidebars inexplicable start and stop scrolling as I scrolled down, meaning I got through 1/4 and closed the tab.

Atrocious and anti-user.

erichurkman··on The Shadow Inc. app that failed in Iowa last night
You can fit this in a google sheet with two tabs. 1678 rows, 11 columns, two tabs. Your central tabulators can create filter views for the precincts they are responsible for recording, and it includes full auditing of who changed what cell and when. Where can I collect my $60k?
erichurkman··on Ask HN: How to explain job gaps on the resume?
Gaps are fine, and normal. Things happen (personal medical, family health, kids, breaks, personal pivots, ...). Be prepared to talk briefly about them if asked so you do appear to be caught off guard. Just keep it simple, consistent, and move on with the conversation.

erichurkman··on Georgia election server showed signs of tampering, expert says
> The alternative is only counting the popular vote, which only serves to disenfranchise the majority of states.

The majority of red states are also the majority of the population, so this doesn't check out. (Trump states ~180mm to Hillary's ~140mm.)

erichurkman··on Products I Wish Existed
My challenge with Discord is that when you enter any established community, it's information overload. Established servers have a dozen or more channels, a slew of bot commands, sometimes mandatory rule review or approval requirements, and it can be hard to judge how healthy the community is.
erichurkman··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Same here; even throwaways get built on Django. It's just so quick and easy to test something out. And if you're lucky and it does need to scale… Django can scale just fine for the vast majority of things.

It Just Works™ and the Django group is not trying to steer Django into something that it's not. Same with Flask.

erichurkman··on Ask HN: Best solutions for keeping a personal log?
Plaid is read only so far as I know. To do write type actions you bring in another party like Stripe.
erichurkman··on Ask HN: Best solutions for keeping a personal log?
If you don't mind a third party having access to your bank, you can use Plaid. Last I knew they supported free accounts with basic balance + transaction support and the first 100 accounts were free. I've definitely seen some home spun personal finance apps using Plaid for free.
erichurkman··on Farm to Table? More Like Ghost Kitchen to Sofa
I think the distinction in California was that they are trying to broaden the definition of cottage foods. The Idaho link you gave is similar to what California had before -- generally non-perishable, temperature-safe foods (bread, jam, nut mixes, etc). California has allowed those for years. The new law was an attempt to broaden what home cooks could prepare and sell.
erichurkman··on Farm to Table? More Like Ghost Kitchen to Sofa
There was a big push in California over the past few years to build out regulatory structure for this. They even passed a bill [0] (NPR article) to enable it -- though they explicitly carved out third party delivery services.

erichurkman··on Counterfeits on Amazon cost Warren bird feeder business $1.5M
Amazon has Prime Now, a grocery delivery service mostly via Whole Foods and a few other stores in major metro areas. Grocery delivery isn't anything new in big cities, but their UI and selection is far above anyone else.

(Unfortunately.)

erichurkman··on Counterfeits on Amazon cost Warren bird feeder business $1.5M
Time investment to weigh and verify incoming items (did they mistakenly buy green cabbage instead of romaine?) is still significantly less, even when factoring in the 5 or 6 taps to refund orders via my phone.

I've tried the other services (Instacart, local stores) but they are even _worse_.

erichurkman··on Counterfeits on Amazon cost Warren bird feeder business $1.5M
Their quality control, or lack thereof, also extends into Prime Now. It is now a game when I get a Prime Now delivery: what did they replace without telling me, what products did they get wrong, and most critically: what did they overbill me for?

It's now to a point I weigh everything coming in, and over half of the items are off weight, some egregiously so (0.2 oz of jalapeno, but billed for 1 pound; .5 pound of chicken but billed for 3; a sliver of broccoli but billed for 2 pounds; the list is endless).

erichurkman··on LogMeIn Acquired by Private Equity
I'm souring on 1password, for both personal and work (we have it company-wide), based on unexpected pricing and licensing model changes. I really liked being able to buy a version _and have it keep working_. I could get it set up for my parents and nothing significant changed because it wasn't a "SaaS" product. I don't need a subscription for a password manager.

So we're ditching 1password for our family, and are likely to do so for work, too.

Did their engineering team not dogfood this change? What Slack engineer or product manager tried to share a `snippet of code` with a peer and thought, "yes, that was a pleasant experience. we should ship that."
