equalunique··on Men in west London have highest male life expectancy in EU
Not for long (pending Brexit).
equalunique··on Crinkle Crankle Wall
My first thought was the irregular shape of the walls affects the way automobile noises echo off of it, potentially contrubuting to slightly quieter streets.
equalunique··on Home-Made Optical P2P Data Link (2003)
Would love to have some of these, but I have no tools to make one.
equalunique··on Waterfall Process
I'm just a support person, but it seems to me that it doesn't. At least, not directly. If it did, then development would be focusing on it.

Why not? Because the customer already paid. Because Dev wants to focus on getting new customers instead of catering to the ones who have already forked over the money.

"What do you mean feature X isn't working for the customer? It's working for us in our lab. Anyway, we're all focusing on getting new feature Y working in our lab now." - This is the attitude I am sensing below the surface. It's frustrating.

equalunique··on The architecture of declarative configuration management
I was going to comment the same thing. On the NixOS About Page[0], the first main section is "Declarative system configuration model"

equalunique··on Linux sucks, and there’s nothing you can do about it
Thinking one could use Linux on Apple's proprietary hardware without non-trivial problems was the first mistake. Really should have thought twice about installing Linux to an external drive on a system with it's own internal drive & bootloader too.
equalunique··on Waterfall Process
At the software company where I work, I have seen the defects and half-baked implementations go by for years. Meanwhile, it's new features that development talks about the most. Recently it dawned on me that they profess to use the "agile" methodology. So now I wonder... Where does maintenance fall in the agile methodology? Am I mistaken that the balance of it's focus is squarely on development rather than sound design / correct implementation?
equalunique··on Mist Showers: Sustainable Decadence?
I really appreciate this article. It hasn't sold me on mist showers, but the panorama of alternative showering techniques was eye opening. Maybe the Dutch rain shower is for me.
equalunique··on Sir Rod Stewart reveals his epic model railway city
Here's my anecdote. Ever since I was about 3, any large machine fascinated me. Construction vehicles, trains, planes, even the garbage trucks making the rounds in my neighborhood, and the dumpster trucks making their rounds at my school. At least for me, it's simply a fantasy over big giant machines. Maybe not so different from how native Amazonian tribes sometimes mistook airplanes flying over the rain forest as gods.
equalunique··on Sir Rod Stewart reveals his epic model railway city
Brings back some long forgotten nostalgia. Growing up in South Florida, where trains aren't much utilized, I was amazed as a little kid visiting Holland how much trains were used in Europe, and how big the model train scene was there. I'll always remember walking into a shop in Eindhoven that was like the most beautiful model train museum I've ever seen.
equalunique··on OpenBSD: Why and How (2016)
No, you're right. So what on OpenBSD can provide that information in a similarly convenient way?
equalunique··on [dead]
True, but it works vice-versa. I remember what Fox News & conservative radio pundits used to say during Obama's two terms.
equalunique··on W3C Distributed Tracing Working Group
Thank you.
equalunique··on OpenBSD: Why and How (2016)
Strace & procfs are some of my favorite Linux programs. OpenBSD's ktrace & kdump are much more limited in what they can do. Is there anything out there that can provide similar functionality for OpenBSD?
equalunique··on W3C Distributed Tracing Working Group
Does this mean I should throw out my OpenTracing book (which I haven't started reading yet)?
equalunique··on Show HN: GPG on macOS and YubiKey
Are you using Gnome? I remember when this was impossible to get working on Gnome for a couple of releases. Hoping that's fixed now.
equalunique··on Snopes Under Legal Attack from Salon.com
Yes, maybe we have seen the same articles by them.

The headlines will say "X is FALSE" implying that a claim is unilaterally false, while one can see in the article's text that it's actually half-true, even more than half-true in some cases.

equalunique··on Snopes Under Legal Attack from Salon.com
Can't say I have much confidence in Snopes. Over the years, I have seen at least a few Snopes articles on topics beginning with "FALSE" which then go on to list several facts supporting the notion that the claim actually is true, but then defer the final word to so-called experts, who arguably have a conflict of interest in said matters.
equalunique··on Halmak – AI designed keyboard layout
>at high speeds, coordinating alternating keystrokes between hands is very difficult

It's for this reason I believe the traditionally wide spacebar should be split up into a number of different keys. Having two sets of Shift, Control, Alt, and the Windows key on either side of the keyboard seems less sensible than one set that can be accessed by either thumb.

I for example use a custom layout that splits the Spacebar into both Space and Shift. Now I don't have to shift my hands to the left/right to capitalize a letter, make an exclamation/question mark, make a double quote, etc.

equalunique··on Ask HN: Do you have experience with school bullying?
I have been the bullied, and the bully, in US elementary schools during the 90s. Never on a consistent basis, like you hear about in US popular culture.

All my memories since 3 years old are of feeling like an outsider. Strong cliques were present even in kindergarten. I suppose this is because my elementary school was in a dense neighborhood, so kids from there were more likely to share social bonds both in and out of school. The further away your home was, the more socially disconnected you were, and the outsider feeling was probably a consequence of that.

It was always after school, when hordes of kids went mostly unsupervised on the campus, when the bullying happened. I was usually alone. I liked to draw pictures. The bullies called me names, stole my papers and pencils, and hit me when I wouldn't give them away.

I had friends at school, but most of them were picked up by their parents soon after school ended. I had to wait on campus in "after school" for hours until one of my parents drove from work to pick me up. Maybe it was my fault for not wanting to join in with the other kids. Maybe it was because my parents told me all the time that I was special that I thought I was better than everyone else, and couldn't waste effort on being with them.

Eventually, I figured out that bullies leave you alone when you hit them really, really hard. In halls where no teachers watched, there were fights. By the end of Elementary School, the kids who all bullied me were shorter than me. I began to play rough. I confronted one member of the in-cliques in the middle of the cafeteria, knocked the wind out of him, and just walked away. No one stopped me, and no adults were present to intervene. I wanted people to believe that I was dangerous, and succeeded at that.

Some time after that, during after school, there was a kid who seemed smart and interesting to me. Learning about him, he mentioned that it was dangerous to hit him on the head, because he was "epileptic." I had never heard of this "epileptic" thing before. I wondered, what would happen if he was hit on the head? So I hit him. He exclaimed something like "Noooooo! Don't hit my head! Don't do it!" To which I thought, "Hah. You had better try to stop me then." So I hit him again, and again, and again. He didn't do anything to stop me physically, so I kept doing it. After a dozen times, it started to bore me, so I finally left him alone. Later that afternoon, I felt guilty about what I'd done. I don't remember if I apologized to him or not, but I hope I did, because I'm pretty sure this counts as bullying.

It's an incredibly intoxicating feeling to put your own amusement above the needs of others, especially when you can justify it. ("Oh, I was just trying to learn about epilepsy, and he's also weird.") Exploiting the perceived weakness of others to be in control of the situation makes you feel powerful, even more so when you've already experienced the same thing the other way around.

Becoming comfortable as a dangerous outsider gave me a reputation of being an annoying ass who nobody wanted to be around. Socially, I was stunted, and it's taken a lifetime of personal development to break through some of that.

To address your question "Is it because of the Croatian nondemocratic socialist government heritage? Or is it an European thing?" I cannot speak to Croatia, but I did go to the Netherlands for a few summers as a kid. It seemed like the kids on the playgrounds there were consistently mean to me too, and sometimes I would act threateningly to show them that I wasn't to be trifled with.

equalunique··on Ask HN: New Monitor: Ultrawide or 4K?
Whatever route you go, make sure the monitor you get is a curved one.
equalunique··on Martin Scorsese: I Said Marvel Movies Aren’t Cinema. Let Me Explain
I've shared the same opinion about Marvel movies for long time. My girlfriend absolutely loves them, so we do watch them together, but I honestly find them really boring. They have stories that constantly turn, huge production value, etc., but none of that really moves me. It's going to sound cliche, but I prefer movies that make one think.
equalunique··on Open Source Enterprise Server OS
The SmartOS and OmniOS folks work together from time to time. For example, I believe Bhyve was first ported from FreeBSD to OmniOS before it eventually came to SmartOS.

equalunique··on Is Death Reversible?
I chose to celebrate Halloween by binging on an HP Lovecraft audiobook, the Necronomicon. Of the short stories contained within, the second one, Reanimator, is my recommendation for anyone in search of spooky entertainment on this topic. I have to warn however that it's set in the 1920s, back when the N word and eugenics were both considered hip.
equalunique··on Unfork()
Is it just me, or is this something that would make Linux even more vulnerable to cyber attacks? What protections are there? Would OpenBSD's pledge prevent something like this?
equalunique··on Fashion industry emits more carbon than flights and maritime shipping combined
I think the legacy of this style of dressing lives on in boomer-generation men being hesitant to go outside when it's raining. They've formed a habit of keeping themselves clean, even when 21st century conveniences really alleviate the need for strict levels of care.
