epmatsw··on Introduction to the Mumps Language (2017) [pdf]
I’m going to go with they hadn’t come up with it yet. Modern M, at least at Epic, goes through a few levels of transpilation/compilation before ending up running in Java (I think that’s what Cache is now). New code isn’t really much worse than any other codebase IMO, but some of the old code there is crazy.
epmatsw··on Introduction to the Mumps Language (2017) [pdf]
I’m also an ex-Epic guy! It’s been a while since I played with these (M without EpicStudio is painful), but I think starting my career in M definitely helped me as a developer. Every time I hear someone complain about JS at work I’m like “If you think that’s crazy...”

Mumps! There's a couple of docker images floating around out there for playing around in it. If anyone hasn't tried it, it's "fun". M's global data stores, weird scoping, and strange syntax make for some interesting problems :P

epmatsw··on ECMAScript 2018: final feature set
Two of them now. One to add Set-specific methods, and another to port the usual Array.prototype methods over to Set and Maps. Can't wait!

epmatsw··on ECMAScript 2018: final feature set
Even that's not technically true. You can represent things in JSON that can't be represented in ES object literals. There's a proposal in Stage 3 to fix that though: https://github.com/tc39/proposal-json-superset
epmatsw··on About rel=noopener (2016)
There’s also a disown-opener CSP directive that’s hopefully going to be implemented at some point. Should help take care of this.
epmatsw··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
From what I’ve heard, there’s a bunch of mostly unused land south of the football stadium that has been slowly being bought up over the last year or so. Obvious speculation is that it’s either Amazon or someone betting that Amazon will want to buy a big chunk of land near downtown...
epmatsw··on Harvesting credit card numbers and passwords from websites
Google Analytics has a query parameter that can be used to extract arbitrary data. So make a request to that with an ID that you control I guess? GitHub mentions it in their CSP post: https://githubengineering.com/githubs-post-csp-journey/
epmatsw··on Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain
Doesn’t Catalonia have a 13% unemployment rate? And a ~40% unemployment rate among young people? Seems like that fits those criteria pretty well...
epmatsw··on Front-End Checklist
Hmm. Why not aria-hidden=true?
epmatsw··on Rubyist makes some Python code 5x Faster
This is an assignment from Georgia Tech’s OMSCS 6601 class, Intro to AI. This was a super fun assignment, with lots of low hanging optimizations like this :)
epmatsw··on Amazon developing three new sci-fi series: Lazarus, Snow Crash and Ringworld
I really enjoyed Fall of Hyperion. It's very different from Hyperion, but I think the plot is still very satisfying. Endymion and Rise of Endymion are okay and interesting in their own way, but a definite step down IMO.
epmatsw··on Git: Using Advanced Rebase Features for a Clean Repository
“Fix lint” is my favorite one.
epmatsw··on WTFJS – a list of funny and tricky JavaScript examples
I think the issue is that you do want non-strict equality 90% of the time, but correctly identifying the 10% where you need strict equality is difficult and impossible to automate. So you end up weighing cognitive overhead and subtle type bugs vs an extra equals sign, which seems like an easy choice to me.

And I think the GP was talking about an existence check with the null comparison, like “did this function receive the argument false or no argument at all?”

epmatsw··on Show HN: The JavaScript Way, a book for learning modern JavaScript from scratch
I love the async book in that series. Really opened my eyes about Promises.
epmatsw··on Ask HN: What are your favorite podcasts?
Accidental Tech Podcast - Apple and random tech discussion. Super fun listen. One of the hosts is also the author of Overcast, which is my favorite podcast app.

The Talk Show - Similar to ATP, but slightly more serious and with rotating guests

Pardon My Take - a humorous sports podcast. It’s kind of juvenile, but it’s growing on me.

Best of Mike and Mike - a semi-serious sports podcast. This one’s about to end, unfortunately.

Stuff You Should Know - funny but informative info about random topics you never realized you wanted to know about

Hardcore History - super long and rarely released episodes, but he gives an amazing in depth look at various historical battles. WWI, the Persian Wars, the Cold War 1945-1965, and the Anabaptist uprising are free now, and are all awesome.

epmatsw··on Yesterday, my program worked. Today, it does not. Why? (1999) [pdf]
I think what blew my mind most was `git bisect run`. Write a test case, go get coffee, have git spit out the offending commit automatically. So cool.
epmatsw··on What to know when your car is melted by 7,500 pounds of slime eels
Not that I've ever heard. This is just a weird headline.
epmatsw··on Show HN All US doctors ordered by their opioid prescription count
Is that unexpected? Seems like it makes sense that doctors who specialize in pain management would make up a huge share of painkiller prescriptions. And oncologists make up a huge share of chemo prescriptions, etc. etc.
epmatsw··on Introducing code owners
This is really excellent. Making sure people get put onto the right PRs is a hassle, and anything that makes code review easier is a huge plus in my book.
epmatsw··on Amazon Said to Plan Cuts to Shed Whole Foods' Pricey Image
That's a good question actually. I was just thinking of nearby grocery stores off the top of my head.
epmatsw··on Amazon Said to Plan Cuts to Shed Whole Foods' Pricey Image
Seems like there's other brands that you could acquire if that was the goal (Safeway, Ingles, Publix, Kroger, etc), but maybe those are too big? Anyways, just seems like a waste to trash the Whole Foods brand when I imagine that's a pretty solid chunk of their value.
epmatsw··on Amazon Said to Plan Cuts to Shed Whole Foods' Pricey Image
Why would you buy Whole Foods to compete with Walmart? Seems like totally different branding and target markets...
epmatsw··on Reddit Is Raising Funds at a Valuation of $1.7B
Besides spoiler tags, check out any of the sports subs: r/cfb, r/NFL, r/NBA have team flair, schedules, and scoreboards. Without those and the inline images, those communities would lose a lot of their fun.
epmatsw··on Verelox Wiped by Ex-Admin
Not sure how that's applicable here? Seems like an ex-admin deleting things is pretty clearly malicious...
epmatsw··on The Dark Side of Doctoring
The Jira analogy falls a little bit flat, because the information entered into an EMR is often the actual product, not just documentation. Orders entered into the EMR directly affect the outcome of the patient, and errors can be fatal. Having a free-text hand-written system for something like that just seems pretty crazy. It'd be like going to a dev shop where no one used linters or wrote tests and the check for deploying to prod with no rollback option was one (admittedly extremely skilled) guy in the basement signing off after a quick code review.
epmatsw··on The Dark Side of Doctoring
This is a pretty shocking opinion to see expressed. Like, you may as well have said "A bunch of developers at <place> decided to go back to C89 because writing code in Rust was too slow, plus did you see the bugs in its borrow checker?" . Do you really believe that paper is a safer alternative?
epmatsw··on Why is React is taking over front-end development?
That actually is pretty fascinating. Even with the fix from above, Angular has a pretty decent lead: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=%2Fm%2F012l1vxv,v...
epmatsw··on ESPN Can't Afford to Go on Like This
+1 for SlingTV with the sports addons for CFB. I subscribe in August and cancel in February every year. It even gets you an ESPN login so you don't have to use Sling's app.
epmatsw··on Calexit: The “Bad Boys of Brexit” throw their weight behind move to split state
On one hand, it's hard to be mad about people wanting their government to be more direct and representative of their desires. On the other, if this happens you might as well split fully out into 50 nations, because the federal government can't wield any real power if a state can choose to ignore the will of the others and up and leave. That would be a shame I think.
