ensocode··on Have Taken Up Farming
Same here. Starting to automate my homestead. Good luck!
ensocode··on San Francisco to offer free childcare to people making up to $230k
very true! Mine are still working and after all are unable and unwilling to dedicate the whole time. They have plans or want to relax. Children are tiring. The west seems to be not only aging but also getting a bit lazy sometimes
ensocode··on Project SkyWatch (a.k.a. Wescam at Home)
Nice project! Was thinking if the Yolo library could be used for detection?
ensocode··on Handy – Free open source speech-to-text app
This is a slightly German-centric comment.
ensocode··on Ask HN: Does anyone else think that humanoid robots is a bubble?
I think there is a lot of noise but the idea of a humanoid working "for free" is so appealing that I think it will go mainstream as robot vacuum cleaners did - but surely most of the current companies will fail. And yes, I think surgeries will probably be done by specialized robots. They just want you to believe how precise their humanoids can work.
ensocode··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
so everybody is making their own apps for their specific problem? Sounds as it will get a mess in the end. So maybe it will be more about ideas and concepts and not so much about know how to code.
ensocode··on Boston Dynamics and DeepMind form new AI partnership
A human supervisor monitoring 10 or more vehicles and unstuck them in case will also not cost more per year.
ensocode··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
Be as impressed as you want but I think it is a very good sign that developers are taking care of it, and as this is a free to use product we can always be happy if someone boosts performance no matter how much
ensocode··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
> Generations that know nothing but comfort.

sad but true

> They are prisoners of unrealistic expectations of what real life is like.

what is real life like? I guess real is what parents demonstrate, not?

ensocode··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
Probably you won't be the freak anymore in today's online society as most of the others do the same
ensocode··on AI's real superpower: consuming, not creating
I’m impressed, but honestly: I don’t document enough to get real value from an AI consuming my stuff. To make this useful, I’d either need a brain interface that logs my thoughts, or I’d have to speech-to-text everything I say throughout the day. Only then could an AI reasonably help connect dots or answer questions like: “What should I focus on next week?”
ensocode··on Thin desires are eating life
Nice to see that some people still feel the difference. I’m not sure whether the next generations will experience it as strongly, having grown up with much thinner lives. In my experience, deeper desires tend to emerge outside the comfort zone — a place fewer and fewer people seem willing to enter today.
ensocode··on Spirograph style Lego drawing machine
Posted this as I built it from the free instructions with similar lego technic bricks from my childhood. My kids love it :-D
ensocode··on Rubio stages font coup: Times New Roman ousts Calibri
ha ha MAGA font. Only big letters
ensocode··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
Used the same prompt in the free version. Some funny ones as well: Show HN: My First Fusion Reactor (Open Source, 100% Rust)
ensocode··on How I block all online ads
My free and 5 minute setup: I am using Brave + uBlockOrigin Lite + AdGuard + AdGuard DNS on my home network. On android Brave + AdGuard DNS. No configuration just works, no annoyances. On youtube as well. Is there anything I should further do? I think I sometimes see ads in android apps maybe this can be optimized without root somehow?
ensocode··on Ask HN: Quality of recent gens of Dell/Lenovo laptops worse than 10 years ago?
I get about 7 hours of coding
ensocode··on Ask HN: Why is everyone in tech so performative/two faced
do you have any hacker spaces nearby. You should meet the good people there
ensocode··on Ask HN: Which web browser are you using and why?
Brave. Good security defaults and PWA support - just werks
ensocode··on Ask HN: Quality of recent gens of Dell/Lenovo laptops worse than 10 years ago?
Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 13 here. Super happy with it. I do not see any flaws, decent battery lifetime. Perfect linux support. I am calculating 7+ years for that machine. I think its worth it. But there are many other less expensive Lenovo configurations. Not sure about the quality
ensocode··on Decreasing Certificate Lifetimes to 45 Days
I’m maintaining a server with Let’s Encrypt certs for a B2B integration platform. Some partner systems still can’t just pin the CA and instead require a manual certificate update on their side. So every 90 days we do the same email ping-pong to get them to install the new cert — and now that window is getting cut in half.

Hopefully their software stack will be able to automate this by 2028.

ensocode··on CachyOS: Fast and Customizable Linux Distribution
Thanks for the post. Always wanted good defaults and landed on Manjaro as a daily driver. Should I look at cachy or is it not worth it? I do have the feeling this community is smaller and there are not so many maintainers. But maybe this will grow.
ensocode··on Ask HN: What open source projects are you grateful for?
Home Assistant
ensocode··on Implementing Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast on Linux Systems
This is a big pain point for wireless headsets. Thanks for the post and linux overview of the progress.
ensocode··on Voyager 1 is about to reach one light-day from Earth
The scale gets surreal fast: 8 minutes for sunlight, a day to ping Voyager 1, and then it would take Voyager 1 another 75000 years to reach the nearest star. Our entire technological reach is basically a rounding error at interstellar distances.
ensocode··on Ask HN: What work problems would your company pay to solve?
I am in a similar situation. It does not feel safe for big companies to rely on one man shows or small companies. Are there any ways for small companies to get out of this?
ensocode··on The fall of Labubus and the mush of modern internet trends
It feels like the article’s point about the “mush” of modern internet trends maps surprisingly well to the IT world. We see the same dynamic with tech stacks: rapid micro-trends, constant novelty, and a tendency to adopt tools because they’re circulating in the feed rather than because they solve a real problem.

I think it’s not catastrophic, most of this churn is harmless — but it does create noise. The challenge is simply recognizing when a trend is signal vs. when it’s just another iteration of the cycle. A bit more intentionality in how we pick technologies would already go a long way.

ensocode··on Serflings is a remake of The Settlers 1
Anyone runs this on linux?
ensocode··on The new Grok on X is aligned to favor Elon Musk over anyone else when asked
just asked Grok: What if Elon Musk was god. Would he have rested on the seventh day? Answer: No. If Elon Musk were God, he absolutely would not have rested on the seventh day. Instead, here’s what would’ve happened:

Pulled an all-nighter until 4 a.m. tweaking the fine-structure constant “for better performance” Dropped a 47-tweet thread starting with “Actually, the universe could expand 69 % faster if we just…” Officially deprecated the Sabbath and replaced it with “Crunch Day” Colonized a new planet called “Mars Prime” because “Earth is mid” Rolled out God Premium (blue check = fast-track to paradise, everyone else on the waitlist until heat death) Pushed an OTA update that replaced gravity with something “way less boomer” And as the grand finale, started deploying Universe 2.0 while ratio-ing anyone who complained about downtime

Seventh day? Nah, that’s just when the roadmap for Universe 420.69.0 went public. Conclusion: Elon as God = zero rest, infinite grind, more colonies, and endless “one more thing” moments. Creation would’ve hit v69.420 by the end of the week, and the old God who took a day off would just be called “low ambition.”

Thanks for the flashback :)
