endisukaj··on Addendum to “Curl is C”
Lisp is even older than C, should we get rid of that too?
endisukaj··on Uber is charging passengers a $10 cancellation fee even when the driver cancels
Uber is sometimes cheaper and Uber drivers have an incentive to provide a better service because if they don't their rating goes down. Taxi drivers don't care because they don't have a rating and will be rude, overcharge or take longer routes than needed to make you pay more.
endisukaj··on Ancient Romans depicted Huns as barbarians – their bones tell a different story
Wow. What a weak article. It basically tells nothing other than the fact that the Huns were people (we knew that) and that different people may lead different lives (we knew that also).
endisukaj··on Ancient Romans depicted Huns as barbarians – their bones tell a different story
To be completely honest, that's what everyone was doing back then. The Romans were just better at it and all things considered they were quite benevolent as far as empires go.
endisukaj··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
I agree. I had the same experience as you when I moved from Ubuntu to Arch, the forums and Wiki are of extremely high quality.
endisukaj··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
I've been using Linux for the past 6 years (on and off only the first two of those) and I have never had this happen to me. Maybe when I was using Ubuntu it was harder to find good answers that were not specific to someone else's usecase because of the nature of Ubuntu forums.
endisukaj··on David Rockefeller has died
What is wrong with more free trade policies?
endisukaj··on Ask HN: Best books on AI?
That's why it's important to understand the underlying math.
endisukaj··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
A tech solution for what actually? The problem is that there are few (good?) bars in the area. The solution for that problem would be to open new bars.
endisukaj··on Ask HN: Is front-end engineering ever going away?
If it's invading the backend then people clearly like it and helps more and more people get their job done in an easier fashion than other languages. What would you rather have people use for the backend?
endisukaj··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
Yeah, seems like there's a need for more bars instead of a complicated solution to a simple problem.
endisukaj··on We didn’t lose control of the Web – it was stolen
Google+ is not as closed as Facebook though. You don't need a G+ account to view what people are talking about in there.
endisukaj··on Show HN: AlephNote – A Simplenote/Standardnote client
Have you ever tried [org-mode][1]? It's an emacs major mode for taking notes, making to-do lists, building websites, having an agenda, etc... It's quite powerful since it's basically a markup language. It can be exported to multiple formats (including latex) and supports writing code and even executing it inside the same file with [babel][2].

Everything's saved as a plain text file so you can sync them across different devices with Dropbox, Drive or even git (which I use).

endisukaj··on Why we are not leaving the cloud
If they used their own hardware a good portion of their profit would go to maintain that very same hardware. And because they would build that infrastructure from scratch it would cost even more to set up.
endisukaj··on Ask HN: How to handle bookmarks so you can find them again?
Thanks!

As for the Pinboard sync: not really. Since I made this mainly for myself and for personal use and since I don't use Pinboard I never thought of adding it. But it does seem interesting, maybe in the future.

endisukaj··on Ask HN: How to handle bookmarks so you can find them again?
Shameless plug.

I have written a CLI-based bookmark manager. It's pretty simple to use, you can add links, remove them, add titles for them, descriptions etc... Everything is organized with tags so you can specify which tag you want to get links from and it will show them to you. Oh and everything's saved in a plain text file so you can backup that file, use version control and whatever you want to do with it.

I will also add searching in the future but have not come around to do it since I haven't had much time. If you or anyone wants to help it's on Github and it's written in Go. Pull requests are welcome :)

endisukaj··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
How? If you use the proper type of coffee and keep an eye on it you will never burn the coffee. Besides, if it's filled full capacity with water they will spill the coffee from boiling before burning it.
endisukaj··on Show HN: Collate: Cross platform note taking app based on plain text data format
You can give Spacemacs or emacs+EVIL mode a try. It's basically emacs+vi keybindings.
endisukaj··on Show HN: Milanote – A notes app for creative work
Emacs + EVIL mode. Life changer for me. If you are not familiar with vi-keybindings, I highly suggest everyone to take the time and learn them. It's not as hard as it seems and will increase your productivity while editing text 100-fold.
endisukaj··on Whiteboard sticker for your laptop
Totally agree. Norhing beats good old pen and paper for notes or sketches. I'm also a fountain pen nut so I get to use my fountain pens while taking notes so it's a win-win for me.

Well, you can't say that Japan is anti-intellectualism at least.

The worst result in 80 years is winning the popular vote with a margin of about 3 million?
endisukaj··on You’re an Adult. Your Brain, Not So Much
This has already happened, to some degree. With baby boomers putting the burden on their grandchildren.
endisukaj··on Cat-proofing a cat feeding machine
Knowing cats... It would just end up with a really fat cat.
endisukaj··on Galileo navigation satellite system goes live
What is "smart" anyway? Lots of countries are filled with untapped demographic potential. To tap into that resource you need a highly advanced school system and a high quality of life (so that you don't suffer from brain drain). Syria is of course a no-no, I don't know much about Iran to comment on their school system but I don't think the quality of life in Iran is as good as say, in Italy.
endisukaj··on Galileo navigation satellite system goes live
Not many places/regions are as advanced and have as a high quality of life and high percentage of educated citizens as Europe, so no. At this moment in time, not really.
endisukaj··on CHVote: Open-source e-voting system from Switzerland
Or you can just use a piece of paper, pencil and a plastic box to collect the votes.
endisukaj··on Leonardo Da Vinci Lost Drawing Discovered
We are living in the post-truth era. I may be reading the parent's comment wrong but I find it funny how it reminds me of some Brexit rhetoric where people were "tired of listening to experts on matters of economy".
