empyrical··on Standard JS: npm install funding
`funding` added support for suppressing the message if the env var `OPEN_SOURCE_CONTRIBUTOR` is set - these should help quiet down a variety of postinstall ads in CI envs and the like (the last two are used by core-js and opencollective-postinstall)

    export OPEN_SOURCE_CONTRIBUTOR=true
    export ADBLOCK=true
    export DISABLE_OPENCOLLECTIVE=true
empyrical··on Geocities Archive
Do you remember what your username was there? There's a slight chance the WayBack Machine got it

edit: oh wow, looks like these archives seem to all be broken because of the javascript they used

empyrical··on Show HN: Cordless, a Discord terminal client written in Go
They discourage custom clients and also they discourage browser extensions that modify the discord interface (like Better Discord)

I don't think they will send the banhammer down on you unless you use it for spamming or "self-botting" but it still seems a bit risky

Ripcord seems to have survived this long without incident for its users, for example

https://cancel.fm/ripcord/

But they might start cracking down if a certain % of people start using other clients

empyrical··on What’s New in ES2019
Also its addition to Python was controversial, to say the least. (I have been enjoying using it, however)
empyrical··on C++20 Is Feature Complete; Here’s What Changes Are Coming
Despite the slight differences they have from the C99 version of them, I'm pretty happy to see designated initializers in C++20
empyrical··on Building the New Twitter.com
One thing I really hope they fix is the timeline is very jumpy when new tweets come in from the top.

The previous design was very good about keeping whatever tweet you were scrolled to in focus when new tweets come in.

I'm not sure how widespread this issue it, but I have seen other people in my personal feed express frustration with this issue.

empyrical··on Valve Will Not Be Officially Supporting Ubuntu 19.10
Hmm, I've done some googling and it looks like Valve has a 64 bit version of Steam for macOS already. You may need to delete Steam.app and re-install to get it. So you will still be able to use Steam itself on Catalina+, but will need to wait for 32bit only games to have a 64 bit version made available (or for someone to come up with some kind of compatibility tool)
empyrical··on Valve Will Not Be Officially Supporting Ubuntu 19.10
If they are dropping Ubuntu 19.10 over lack of 32 bit support, it's probable that they're going to drop support for Catalina and up as well. I don't think they've made a statement yet, however.
empyrical··on YouTube is working with Universal Music Group to remaster iconic music videos
One thing I really hope they don't do is altering the aspect ratio of the restored music videos. By altering the aspect ratio of the video, you are also messing with the cinematography of the video and putting your own "spin" on it.

To make things even worse, sometimes companies will even crop 4:3 footage to be 16:9, resulting in less things being visible than in the original.

Thankfully judging by the videos linked in the blog (at least the ones I've looked at), they've left the restored videos in 4:3.

For a good idea of how bad things can get when a company doing restoration messes with aspect ratios, this video highlights the bad restoration of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

empyrical··on Qt 5.13 Released
It isn't widely used yet (as far as I know) but there's a library to use QML as the language for building QtWidget-based apps:

https://www.kdab.com/declarative-widgets/

empyrical··on Qt 5.13 Released
> which generates XML files which can either be compiled to C++

Additionally, both Python bindings (PySide/Qt for Python and PyQt) have a compiler to turn these XML files into Python code.

empyrical··on Square’s terms of service forbid use of AGPL-licensed software in online stores
The same restriction is also in Weebly's (owned by Square) terms

empyrical··on Apple announces redesigned Mac Pro
I am hoping that now that there's a Mac with proper PCIe slots it might make more business sense for nVidia to make drivers for macOS. Previously, there were Thunderbolt eGPUs which could allow using nVidia GPUs with (non-Hackintoshed) macOS but it may not have brought in enough sales to justify the cost of developing.
empyrical··on Amazon Is Poised to Unleash a Purge of Small Wholesale Suppliers
Also (in Canada at least) they are using a service called "Shippo" for shipping labels, instead of PayPal's shipping label service
empyrical··on AMD Ryzen 3000 announced
Conjecture on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if we also see a 64 core Threadripper - there's going to be a 64 core Epyc:

https://wccftech.com/amd-7nm-epyc-64-core-32-core-cpus-specs...

Although they may save it for a "Zen2+" or something similar, like they did with 32 core Threadripper

empyrical··on Smoke seen for miles as SpaceX Crew Dragon suffers anomaly at Cape Canaveral
If you're wondering why there wasn't nitrogen mixed in, it's because the additional systems+tanks for handling nitrogen would've added more weight to the spacecraft.

This video goes in to a bit more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvA7N_j_8os

empyrical··on Fukushima: Removal of nuclear fuel rods from damaged reactor building begins
Much like how bunker-buster nukes allowed for penetrating nuclear bunkers to stop that from happening (being able to "push the button" and hide away), the militaries of the world will most definitely create something that will restore Mutually Assured Destruction in that scenario.
empyrical··on I got tired of PHP and Perl, so I tried bash
Indeed - it is reserved by the registry, and not available to be used. Presumably to avoid abuse
empyrical··on I got tired of PHP and Perl, so I tried bash
Also, `php-cli` has a very basic REPL which can be accessed using `php -a`.
empyrical··on Nations of the Amazon are seeking “shared governance” of the .amazon TLD
.coop for co-operatives has also been around for a while (2001), with domains like: https://chicken.coop/
empyrical··on Google+ cannot be used with customer or brand accounts anymore
I don't know if ArchiveTeam's bots can be logged in as Google Accounts, but I can still (for the time being at least!) browse around on a GSuite account, and an old grandfathered-in "Google Apps for Business" account
empyrical··on The culture war at the heart of open source
The parent comment implied that it was still the case however, which is misleading; it has been available under GPL rather than the non-commercial "QPL" since 2000, and under the less-restrictive LGPL since 2009.

Qt is also interesting in that there is also an agreement in place with the KDE Foundation that ensures that the Qt Company will always offer the core parts of Qt under a "proper" open source license. If they choose to switch to one of these non-commercial licenses again, then KDE is entitled to release the source under a BSD license if they want

empyrical··on Samsung’s Foldable Phone Is the $1,980 Galaxy Fold
AMD's next Ryzen CPUs will be 7nm as well. And their Radeon VII uses 7nm Vega chips
empyrical··on Retro game engine for developers that enjoy creating games like it's 1997
The book "The Final Hours of Portal 2" has a section where they explained how much pressure they felt to try and have Portal 2 live up to Portal 1. Even effectively shutting down development of of other games for 2 months so the whole company could focus on prototyping experiments for new gameplay concepts that could be incorporated into Portal 2.

I would not be surprised of the pressure they feel for Half-Life 3 to be great is an order of magnitude greater than what they felt with Portal 2

empyrical··on Windows Sandbox
In addition to the use-case of running untrusted applications safely, I think these light weight and ephemeral execution environments would be amazing for continuous integration as well!
