emilv··on No HTML needed
The title/header is from HTML. The nicest thing is not the lack of HTML but the lack of an image. The picture is entirely painted by CSS.

"can be interesting to debug" sounds scary :-)
emilv··on Issue 224182 - chromium - Chrome wakes me up in the middle of the night
I always do this in all my browsers (I use Flashblock or similar extensions). I have no idea why people need plugin content to start immediately. This also blocks most of the annoying ads.
emilv··on Issue 224182 - chromium - Chrome wakes me up in the middle of the night
I have found most humans to not care about their energy consumption. So in the name of humanity, I have at least one computer on 24 hours a day.
emilv··on Blocked Sites is discontinued
Interestingly enough this means you have to install software on your own computer to get better search results from a company that tries to deliver a hosted ("cloud") service. Seems backwards to me.
emilv··on Darpa envisions the future of machine learning
This might be a good thing. I am still not convinced that machine learning is so great it is pictured to be, but the potential is certainly worth studying. Better tools and languages are a must in this area.
emilv··on Scraping the sh*t out of the interwebz – Part #1
Don't forget to set a good user-agent header and follow the rules set forth by robots.txt!
emilv··on Establishing secure connection
I think it is a terrible idea to put fake security symbols on the screen. It makes people trust those fake symbols instead of learning what they should look for. Since the symbols are just fake it is very easy to stage a MITM attack.

A much better security indicator would be something saying "This site is secure if there's a green area in the address bar [picture of what it should look like]. Click it to verify our identity.".

emilv··on Free Google Docs Every SEO Needs To Have
The term "SEO" should probably be banned from Hacker News altogether. No need for a downvote button then.
emilv··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
I see your pun: since ARM uses less power the power users will in fact not be power users anymore!
emilv··on An alternative to alert()
While it technically works in Opera Mobile 12.10, it is just not giving me a good user experience. It is down in the lower right corner of the phone and I need to zoom in to be able to read it (which takes effort and time since my phone/handheld computer is not that fast). That is a lot different from an alert() box which integrates with the UI on the device to instantly give me an actual popup.

I also had a general problem with boxes disappearing. I tried opening a box with autohide after 10 seconds, then a box with a button. I positioned my mouse over the button but then the autohide box disappeared and the button moved away from my mouse! I seriously hate such UIs. Stuff should not move on a page, especially not if they are meant to be clicked. And text boxes should not disappear when I am half-way through reading them.

emilv··on Hackathon No More
Why would anyone think they can write good code without sleep? I need my sleep to function and will not go to any contest or event where sleeping at night is not an option.
emilv··on Tipping doesn't make any sense
The point is that the business owner is the one taking the risk of the business, as well as investing his money and making business decisions (including the decision to hire a server). Why should the servers take some of that risk when they are most far away from actual business decisions? why shouldn't, for example, the cook and the cleaning staff take the same risk as the servers?
emilv··on Nine-year-old’s lunch blog shames school into making changes
I cannot talk for the French, but in Sweden they usually handle special food requirements rather well. The children with special needs are all known to the kitchen staff so they get what they need directly from them.

emilv··on Linus Torvalds on new Chromebook Aura UI
I think you are wrong. I don't think people listen to Torvalds because he created and leads the development of the Linux kernel. I think people listen to him because he is very active in the free software community, voicing his opinions, writing in a somewhat balanced way and clearly expressing what he believes. People don't always agree with him (obviously the Gnome guys don't).

You can do exactly the same thing: make your voice heard, state clearly and preferrably factually what you think is best for the free software stack. People will listen!

Maybe they even shipped this to users automatically through an already existing (Python-supporting) system?

1) Use unit tests.

2) It isn't that ugly! If you know what the code is supposed to do (which should be clear from documentation or just the purpose of the program) and it fails in some cases, take that failing case and go through the if-else statements manually.

If this is machine-generated code the real program is the one outputting this script. The big machine-generated statements are just data from that program. That program may be much better structured.
