emh68··on Amazon's Fake Review Problem
That isn't the issue mentioned by OP.
emh68··on Amazon's Fake Review Problem
I've actually recently gotten a fake from Macys.com, so it seems to me that sites like Amazon and eBay are saturated with fakes, and the scammers are infiltrating supply chains in general. (They refused to accept the return, however, so I don't think the problem is that widespread, or maybe they're just not aware of the issue yet.)

This might be brick & mortar's last laugh. How do you protect against fake merchandise? Don't worry about it, customers simply won't buy the obviously incorrect items, and you can identify and deal with them when you take inventory.

emh68··on Ask HN: Huge enterprise customer wants to see our source code
Easy: Make them pay for the privilege, based on how much you think it’s worth you to NOT show them.
emh68··on Living on $100k a Year
My great-great-great-great-great grandfather lived on $1/day! Stop whining!
emh68··on Why we never thank open source maintainers
It's mostly a plus for their resumes.
emh68··on Cortana is really bad
Oh I see, yeah I agree. “Person responsible for X should be fired” is something I see all the time, but it never occurred to me that it might be a serious request.
emh68··on Cortana is really bad
What about all the people who have lost their jobs after a company goes under due to horrible product teams? If someone isn’t pulling their weight, you have to boot them for the greater good.
emh68··on What is a Source Map
Now I’m wondering when the term “debug symbols” came along and if there was something they called it before that. Google shows no results for “debug symbols” from before 1990, but I have definitely heard of fortran-to-lisp tools and whatnot that are definitely comparable from the 70s.

Everyone forgot about good old win32 it seems...

Has anyone ever studied this stuff before? You think they'd have noticed that if true...
emh68··on Sublime Text 3.0
ST is the only editor with non-insane indentation controls: it's right there at the bottom of the window (want to start using 4-space indent in a JS file in the middle of a project full of C++ code that's tab indented? In a project where some C++ devs wrote 4-space indebted JS, when you normally prefer 2, but what to stay consistent? No problem, it's a click away). IntelliJ enforces per-language indentation (what if you have multiple projects with 2 or 4 space indent? Tough luck) and IIRC Atom requires you to download a barely-maintained plugin just to get something even resembling indentation control (and you have to edit a config file to change it - on the fly this ain't!)
emh68··on Ad blocking is under attack
How to really fix this: make an extension that detects when a request is made to a domain owned by these scumbags and pop up a warning message, allowing the user to make the right decision and close the tab and go elsewhere.
emh68··on Malicous code written into DNA infects the computer that reads it
I feel like scientists are intentionally doing things hey know will generate clickbait headlines. It's probably good for funding.
emh68··on 50+ Segmentation Faults per Hour: Continuing to Stress Ryzen
Can we all switch to Xeons and <whatever server CPUs AMD has out now>? Or do those have similar issues?
emh68··on More people riding bikes makes cycling safer for everyone, major new study finds
What's missing from the heroin analogy is fact that the dangers faced by cyclists can be changed - if drivers see a cyclist every 5 minutes vs every 1 hour, they'll be looking out for bicyclists constantly.
emh68··on 2017’s Most Wanted Tech Employee
Time to scrap all our Ruby on Rails apps and rewrite in Perl, folks.
emh68··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Rather than lie about your salary, which can be verified, lie about something that can't be verified. Just say that your current employer is awesome, amazing, has a great culture, coworkers you consider close friends, and you're sad to leave, but you realize that you can't afford to keep living in $bigCity on your current salary...
emh68··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Before you're hired? If I found out that a prospective employer was calling my current employer, I would decline to continue interviewing and tell them exactly why.
emh68··on Bash and Windows Subsystem for Linux Demo [video]
You can actually install mingw for Linux in WSL and cross-compile win32 binaries, which is pretty funny.
emh68··on Homebrew Amiga Graphics Card (FPGA, Open Source) Finished [video]
Aye, I didn't even know they made any, so I hacked up an adapter: https://github.com/ehalferty/arduino-usb-to-adb

There are other (non-DIY) USB-to-ADB projects out there taking shape, too.

But I'm also hoping someone starts making Nubus cards for VGA, USB mass storage, etc. It would just take an FPGA or perhaps even an overclocked teensy.
