elpatoisthebest··on IFTTT introduces IFTTT Pro, free accounts now limited to 3 applets
My experience has been different.

I currently maintain about 280 different API integrations. I have a team that does constant maintenance. Usually 1-2 API breaking changes per day is what we see after you get past the stable big ones. Even versioned APIs kick you off the old version pretty regularly. In the upcoming months we have 3 scheduled version bumps that are mandatory as they will discontinue the old version completely. Not "use the new version for more features", like completely 100% "we are not supporting v2 any longer. You won't get responses in 60 days. Good luck."

It's easy to say, "they're doing versioning wrong" but it's the reality.

Everyone does oauth wrong. Everyone does versioning wrong. Everyone adds or removes fields that were once critical to someone's workflows. Maybe 25% of our integrations are a joy to work with. Once you get to the smaller players, things start to get weird.

elpatoisthebest··on Ask HN: Parents, how is virtual education going for your kids?
Our original plan was just to use homeschooling material to supplement things he probably wasn't learning well enough like math and some language stuff. He told me he wished he had workbooks to use, but now after seeing the disorganization and low effort from the teacher/district (I'm not sure exactly where to assign the blame), we're pretty glad we got stuff for every subject.
elpatoisthebest··on Ask HN: Parents, how is virtual education going for your kids?
3rd Grade is a nightmare in our district where the apparent idea was to settle for the worst possible online experience.

It's a google slides deck that the kids have to edit. They've been assigning the same work accidentally day after day. We've contacted the principal countless times, and although she's sympathetic, the quality has not improved as it's a curriculum from the district.

We just stopped logging in completely and are doing a home school curriculum.

If the school reaches out, I'll deal with it then, but so far there's no indication that they've ever reviewed an assignment to begin with.

elpatoisthebest··on Introduction to Ada
Unfortunately in my experience that "only" represents a somewhat large percentage of HR or hiring managers.
elpatoisthebest··on Ask HN: Career and life advice for a 30yo
I've been in a somewhat similar boat. Similar age and experience at least.

I don't have the answers to your career questions, unfortunately, my suggestion is pick something that excites you and do that. Your career (and life) will end one day. Do what makes you happy.

Life advice though, I might have a suggestion while you are looking for the perfect career move.

One thing I've been doing a lot in the last 2 years is making a serious effort to mentor junior developers or people who are interested in programming.

It started with some of the developers on my team. I made sure they knew that I was available after hours (with some boundaries) to help however I can. I've tried really hard to be supportive and do my best to build them up. Everything from code reviews on their personal projects to leet code explanations, how to ask for a raise to resume building. I average about 2 or 3 nights per week where someone at least reaches out for help.

It's been incredibly gratifying. I don't quite feel qualified to be a real mentor in something serious, but I do know web development. Paying that forward has been mentally rewarding. My relationships with these people have grown and I find honest joy when they message me telling me they've gotten the job, raise, or even when they have solved a problem on a project.

It wouldn't be a solution to all your concerns, but if nothing else, you might find some simple joy from inspiring others.

I'm a vim + fugitive user who tried emacs for a year about 2 years ago. I eventually moved back to vim but the thing I miss from emacs is magit. It made so much sense to me. Loved it.
elpatoisthebest··on It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
?

That entire first line seems entirely unrelated the the words I typed. Did you respond to the correct person?

elpatoisthebest··on Unofficial APIs
My guess is that the two things are unrelated, at least looking at this list.

The API itself isn't the reason people use the product.

elpatoisthebest··on It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
Your edit got under my skin way more than your comment did.

Kiss of death seemed melodramatic at best though. Every CEO, CTO, and CFO I've worked with had kids. Guess they were the lucky few who didn't have their professional career ruined by those goblin children?

elpatoisthebest··on Redis 6.0 GA
This is great timing. I was just spinning up a new service using redis this morning. Thanks for the constant work you put into this project.
elpatoisthebest··on Writing Python inside Rust
It's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me to read these kinds of weird things with no practical application. It's just a little refreshing to read about something technically possibly, but frivolous (no offense meant to the OP, of course) just because it can be done.
elpatoisthebest··on Nintendo’s Philosophy: Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology (2015)
Rereading my comment, I see that I underplayed how important the portability of the switch is to me.
elpatoisthebest··on Nintendo’s Philosophy: Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology (2015)
So, I have an 8 year old. The switch is probably the most fun couch gaming we can do together. We also have an xbox and a pc for games, and we usually ignore them both in favor of Nintendo exclusives. Pokemon, BOTW, Smash Bros.

It's honestly a really good co-op couch experience. And when we go on road trips, it's better than the days when we would load up a fat crt tv in my parent's van and plug in the SNES.

Also, if I'm working in my office, he can bring the switch into the room with me and play while I work. Portable is nice.

elpatoisthebest··on It's not what programming languages do, it's what they shepherd you to
I don't think that person means you literally can't know, just that it increases the difficulty of reasoning through the code.

I was debugging some code earlier today. Someone had put a global variable that is either altered or used in 4 or 5 different functions across our codebase. I had to literally draw out the paths a user could go down to figure out what the value of this global variable would be at the time I was trying to call one of those functions. It was not awesome.

I figured it out, so you're right. I do know which functions touch the variable and NOW I know when. But I still can't guarantee the value of the variable.

Needless to say, tomorrow will see a little refactoring.

elpatoisthebest··on Costco will not allow returns on high-demand items like toilet paper, water
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I remember videos of Chinese people, very unhappily, being forced to stay in their homes by armed guards, as opposed to them obediently trusting their government.

Maybe I'm misremembering?

elpatoisthebest··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
I think your comment is probably tongue-in-cheek but I still want to throw my support in with the person you replied to.

The longer I've been at the company I'm at, the less interested I am in how cool something is and the more interested I am in the least effort possible to keep the app running.

elpatoisthebest··on Is It a Pandemic Yet?
It looks like it was fast tracked quite a bit faster than 2 years during the H1N1 pandemic.

I don't have a better resource right now than Wikipedia, but I guess we could follow the links for more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_flu_pandemic#Vaccines

But according to this page by 19 November 2009 the vaccine was distributed to 16 countries. I think it was first really noticed in April 2009.

Not making any claims about what to expect for COVID-19, just that they have fast tracked vaccines faster than 2 years in the recent past.
