elliott34··on Ask HN: Joining the Military?
Depends what your goals are. I haven't been in the military, but I know that it's nothing like the commercials. And I know that most soldiers are bored to tears and the most exiting part of their day is if they get something in the mail.
elliott34··on How Python became the language of choice for data science
This is amazing! I'm happy I came across this comment. I've always been frustrated installing python packages as a python newbie. in R (in R studio) it was always just search and click, and, suddenly, "I know Kung-Fu" like Neo in the matrix, except, err, "I know ggplot2."
elliott34··on 59% of the 'Tuna' Americans Eat Is Not Tuna
well it's sold in the butcher/fresh fish section of the store, so I'm pretty sure it's prepared on site using whatever is used to supply their normal tuna. at least I hope.
elliott34··on 59% of the 'Tuna' Americans Eat Is Not Tuna

elliott34··on Why I left Google
so what? She's living life on her terms. It's a personal article.
elliott34··on The Myth of Willpower and “Eat Less, Move More”
What is the name of that book that goes into this? If so do you know if any of them are worth reading? Power of habit or somesuch? Thank you.
elliott34··on My Summer Reading List
I second Snow Crash reco. I've read Kafka on the Shore and Wind-Up bird chronicle by Murakami and loved both. Wind-Up bird was very hard to finish at points but I'm glad I did. The more I think about the more chills I get. The book is truly a dream. I'm not sure what is largely about but I will never forget how it made me feel. It's impossible to explain.
elliott34··on Iain Banks dies of cancer aged 59
From his wikipedia:

"Following graduation Banks chose a succession of jobs that left him free to write in the evenings. These posts supported his writing throughout his twenties and allowed him to take long breaks between contracts, during which time he travelled through Europe, Scandinavia and North America. He was an expediter analyser for IBM, a technician (for British Steel) and a costing clerk for a Chancery Lane, London law firm during this period of his life.[4]"

Kind of inspiring. Most of my generation (I am 23) want instant gratification and won't eat shit like a guy like Banks would in order to support what he really liked to do.

elliott34··on The Magic of the Brain Dump
I like workflowy. Low friction to use
elliott34··on Capacitor plague
If this happens to your Samsung LCD TV, it is a pretty fun project to fix yourself! the only thing you need to is to order to the parts, youtube, and a soldering iron.
elliott34··on How Parents Around the World Describe Their Children, in Charts
am I the only one bothered that these charts arn't sorted...
elliott34··on A/B Test Significance: Test Outcomes for Statistical Significance
This is completely wrong. You need to specify power of the test. You are trying to detect if the new population mean Conv rate is higher (given a, say, 10% increase is economically meaningful to you). Otherwise this tells me nothing
elliott34··on 100,000 stars
Then if you imagine how long the Internet has existed compared to the universe, all of this hullabaloo on HN becomes even funnier .
elliott34··on I Quit My Passion And Took A Boring Job
I got a bachelors in Physics, and I am not qualified for very much. Does anyone know if I can go back to school to become an accountant without an undergrad degree in accounting? I would adore one of these lovely boring jobs.
elliott34··on How to think about science and becoming a scientist
Arn't the biological sciences notorious for having way too many Phds than relevant research jobs/professorships available? Scientific research should be encouraged in undergrad with the caveat that it really only qualifies you for grad school. Instead, one could spend summers in internships and enjoy more employment opportunities upon graduation. Research can be fun, but reality bites.
