elevensies··on Six works of Computer Science-Fiction
There are actual fiction books in the small italics at the bottoms of the blurbs.

I don't see a you're/your error in the original source, but its/it's is a pain to handle on a mobile keyboard. A lot of other apostrophes are handled by autocorrect but that particular one isn't.

All caps I don't get, I find it impossible to read. I suspect that people who write all caps must be desensitized to it somehow.

elevensies··on First 26 pages of Neal Stephenson's new novel Seveneves
Yeah, I probably average 1000 pages per month on Kindle for iPhone. My usual purchase flow is: I see a book that interests me, I get the sample sent to my phone. When I feel like reading, I read some samples and If I like one I can order from my phone and start reading.

With this particular book it would be a safe bet, I've read all his books, even REAMDE twice, which others didn't appear to find as compelling. But I don't like even the concept of pre-orders on general principles, although fiction publishers don't abuse them as badly as other i.e. game publishers (http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/2s6zgz/stop_preorder...) I still prefer not to participate.

That reminds me, I really hate how they start promoting books a few weeks before they are released. I see the promotion, and then when I go to buy it "pre-order" ??!?! Like it isn't a fucking yacht, I give you the money you give me the book, I'm not interested in a more complicated transaction. I'd be happier if they did the promotion during a time frame where I could actually buy it.

Other than possession? The technology required to harvest them is far more advanced than the tech required for an ICBM, so anyone who can I get there, I don't think will be paying tribute.

If you think about what a butler would do, that's the logical endpoint, it could mostly be done in software I think. Given a budget and a set of goals (keep certain things stocked, fresh, replace when used) it would try to satisfy them. It might warn you if it can't, and you could adjust criteria if you don't like the results. Given the API that appears to be behind the buttons I think we're already at the point where you could create a device so you could just yell in frustration "GODDAMMIT I NEED MORE TIDE™" and then it shows up an hour later (in select cities).
elevensies··on Choose Boring Technology
My rule of thumb is that if the project has a deadline, then I use components I already know. And to test something new I use it for something that is internal only.
elevensies··on Beijing to Shut All Major Coal Power Plants to Cut Pollution
Ok, thanks for the info, now I have a better sense of proportion. So that means that 25 years brings it to 1% globally. I see how breaking the cap might not be totally inevitable but it doesn't seem very evitable either. I think we could see a major food price increase in our lifetimes.

I'm sure there are various tracking networks that track browsing across websites, it is sort of a logical extension. UPS or Fedex could easily build out a big tracking network.

elevensies··on Josh Tetrick's food revolution: saving the world one egg at a time
The energy input for animal products is higher across the board than for plant products http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/webber-more-effici... . Even if you grow the chickens better way, you still need to grow the feed, so you are back to the original problem. If the chicken feed can be grown in a good way, then so can the peas probably.

So -- just moving from eggs to a plant based substitute, changing nothing else about the agricultural process, would reduce any negative consequences of farming.

elevensies··on Latin America Is Quitting Smoking, and Africa Is Taking It Up
It can devalue the brand with or without having an effect on overall consumption, it will make their boxes look more similar to cheaper brands.
elevensies··on Google Makani – Wind Energy Kites
I'm still a bit confused about how the forces line up for the flight path. If I'm understanding:

- the wing flies in a circle which is perpendicular to the wind (oriented the same way an ordinary wind turbine would be)

- the tether is up-wind from the wing, so the force from the tether pulls the wing into the wind which generates lift, which is used to propel the wing along the circular path

- the propellers are driven by the circular movement of the wing, and generate electricity

So the tether and the wing generate movement, the movement spins the propellers, and the propellers drive the generator. Except for take-off and positioning, where they are used as motors. Am I understanding this?

elevensies··on Ask HN: Non-Sexist Behaviour Guidelines?
I think this is a good rubric, for things you can control.

There can also be things that are way outside your control, that are almost guaranteed to cause serious/widespread feels. For example:

1. a co-worked is very attracted to you, and can't take a hint. Your continued romantic rejection will certainly inflict pain.

2. you exchange fluids with someone (totally unrelated to work) and then later discover that it is someone's recent ex and they are going to find out, and they're really not going to like it.

3. Your boss is in love with you and decreasingly able to hide it.

......

These are situation you can't solve, but you also can't do nothing.

- talk to a someone about it at work. ideally someone with authority, who knows the people involved. just casually, so you aren't kicking off a big process, but so that they can see what is happening before that negative feelings that are being generated metastasise into something more serious.

- gossip ... hold your nose and address it. if you don't it will slowly become accepted fact.

- communicate rejection clearly
